My 11yo gets really excited when I let her reorganise a kitchen cupboard!!

Please say I'm not the only one with kids who like strange things?

I remember my mum laughing at me when I was a kid because I got really excited that the new brand of bathroom cleaner she’d bought worked better than the old one. (Guess whose job it was to clean the bathroom!)

One of DS' favourite things as a toddler was putting Oxo cubes back in the little cardboard box they came in. Most meal times involved me "accidentally" dropping them and him putting them back in, sometimes several time over as it was very important that the identical cubes went back in a particular order. In the end, I had a stunt box of them as he got upset when I actually used them and there were only a few left.
He has never shown any interest in putting anything else away, including his toys, clothes, school stuff etc

DD is 15, and one of her favourite things to do is untangle wool!

I bought a dish brush last week where you put the washing up liquid in the handle ....
blew 15 year old DS mind when he used it 😂

DD2 used to like removing the cardboard inside of toilet rolls. It was an absolute pain. I'd find her sitting by the toilet with a pile of floppy toilet rolls and the carboard bit up her arms with a great big grin.

8yo loves hoovering and 'sorting', things like organising my sewing box or putting all the various bottles and sprays under the sink into order.

BendingSpoons · 25/02/2023 19:23

DS likes watching the clock change to the new hour. At 5.59 etc everything else pauses.

tatteddear · 25/02/2023 20:23

Dd2 (15) is very into farm machinery. Fascinated by tractors. She is in every other way a pretty cool kid. She doesn't tell anyone about the tractors😬

SarahAndQuack · 25/02/2023 20:55

My daughter's odd things are mostly food. This evening I watched her eat a preserved lemon with every appearance of enjoyment. She likes fish eyes, fish eggs, fish skin, and the crispy bones on fish you get if you fry a whole one; she also loves the fat on any meat, and sucking the brains out of prawn heads. She is nearly six and has been like this since she weaned. We do eat a range of foods but DP is actively disgusted by prawn heads and neither of us would choose to eat fish skin/eyes or meat fat.

Why didn’t I get any of these housekeeping children?

myveryownelectrickitten · 25/02/2023 21:08

DD absolutely loves picking out the cat’s crusty eye sleep. Blech!

Unfortunately despite her fascination with my kitchen cupboards... her room looks like a tornado!!

I need to borrow him!

or her!

Figrolls14 · 25/02/2023 21:15

What a good thread!

Newstartonwards · 25/02/2023 21:19

Her room is a tip but everything is labelled and sorted to within its life.
all folders labelled in different colours and they have to match

she will randomly put everything out of a kitchen cupboard and sort it - it will be amazing eg half the room in the cupboard taken up and much more logically ordered

Heyyyy tractors are cool! 🤣

My son loses his mind with excitement when he hears the dishwasher open. He’s 16 months and will hear it from another room, then comes hooning in, laughing his little head off, and helps me unload, passing me everything piece by piece.

Godlovesall26 · 25/02/2023 21:28

My brother as a toddler loved taking the bus, to anywhere, but it had to be a decent length journey, he wasn’t even that interested in watching out of the window, just looking at names of bus stops. Drove my dad insane ha

Godlovesall26 · 25/02/2023 21:36

And also spending his cars in some sort of journey (that was a bit older) in his head, but literally all over the first floor. It was quite a linear organization with color codes, so easy for him to notice if one had been moved => cue tantrum
It was a pain to move around because they were really centrally organized so in the the most unpractical locations.

Ironically at 25 still doesn’t have his driver’s licence ! (Doesn’t need it for now, major capital city)

Sorry spreading not spending. By that age we were screwed, he’d accumulated tons of them

GailTheSnail · 25/02/2023 21:39

My three year old is obsessed with watching things come out of shells on you tube. He gets frustrated if there's to much preamble by the people doing it though - starts saying 'it boring. I want to see inside!'

Rainallnight · 25/02/2023 21:45

Suitcases. DS (4) has never met a suitcase he doesn’t like.

CinderellaFant · 25/02/2023 21:47

DS (just turned 6) loves folding clothes. Anything sitting about gets folded neatly.
