Help me find this food from late 1960’s/1970’s!

Having a conversation with family tonight about childhood foods, I remember a ‘honey type sandwich spread’ in a fairly flat round tub, bit like a set honey, obviously cheaper, bulked out with god knows what! White tub, maybe a bear 🐻 on the lid… distinct memories of it being really sweet & sugary texture on bread & butter for our tea. No one else remembers it! Am I imagining it?

That’s just come back to me…cheap honey spread. The first time I had real honey I realised I actually liked honey.

Hence, why we had bad teeth from all that sugar, although at the time we loved it!

No it was a shallow, wide plastic tub.

We used to have a chocolate spread in the same kind of tub. It was dark and glossy, not at all like Nutella.

Was it white with sort of Scandi-style decor, garland style? Not cartoony. It's ringing bells with me!

Chatterboxy · 23/02/2023 20:43

No, definitely a plastic shallow dish.

Maybe you'd find it in the Museum of Brands

Might be worth sending them an email tomorrow, much to the giggles from family right now, but I know I’m not imagining it!

Definitely a white shallow tub, maybe brownish writing, but can’t get a picture of a bear out of my head.

You’re not the only one to wonder about this! boards.straightdope.com/t/who-remembers-1970s-style-cadburys-chocolate-spread/204987

I vaguely remember it but can’t recall its name.

OnSecondThoughts · 23/02/2023 20:51

Yes, I can vaguely remember this too. A wide, white round plastic tub with a prise-off lid. The name 'honey bear' sounds familiar but it might not be exactly right.

I only clicked this thread as it made me think of a chocolate spread from when I was little! White tub, quite flexible plastic similar to a yoghurt pot, with blue writing and a blue bear. The spread was thick and sticky and tasted like sweet dark chocolate. Every now and then I eat something that tastes nearly like it.

But it was the 80s I remember this from.

Oakbeam · 23/02/2023 20:55

I remember it. It was bulked out with sugar.

I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called though.

SoupDragon · 23/02/2023 20:55

Chatterboxy · 23/02/2023 20:27

Vague memories of it being called something like ‘Honey Bear Spread’? Maybe that’s where I’m getting the bear reference from?

It was honey bear spread! I remember it.

I vaguely remember it but can’t recall its name.

Perhaps it was only around for a short period of time, but strange that there’s no reference/image anywhere for it. 😖

And yes, it was a shallow white tub. Round.

Yes , I remember it , child of the 60s .
Cannot remember the name but you didn't dream ir Grin

Oakbeam · 23/02/2023 20:58

Unlikely though. That is American.

SoupDragon · 23/02/2023 20:59

I think this is why I like runny honey that has set and crystallised 😂

FannythePinkFlamingo · 23/02/2023 20:59

I can't help with the honey spread but I definitely remember the chocolate spread. In a sandwich it used to turn a bit lumpy as I remember. Came in a low plastic round tub with a flip off lid. Not remotely like the chocolate spread you can buy today.
