Do people not carry cash or bank cards anymore?

Recently sold an item on FB Marketplace. The buyer was annoyed that I insisted they had to pay in cash (they offered me a bank transfer) as they said they didn't have cash or a bank card with them (I did tell them before they came to collect; the annoyance wasn't due to turning up and then finding out).

So ... got to wondering whether lots of people don't routinely carry cash or cards any more but just rely on using their phone.

If I was buying a second hand item I would purposefully get cash beforehand. I'd do bank transfers with friends not randomness.

spottie · 22/02/2023 17:21

I only carry my phone BUT if I were buying something from a private individual I'd absolutely expect to pay in cash!

MyOwnVolt · 22/02/2023 17:22

I pay for everything on my phone. Most times I don’t even take my purse!

It would be difficult if you relied only on yr phone and yr battery died, I know someone who did this and couldn’t buy her train ticket

Pixiedust1234 · 22/02/2023 17:23

I don't have online banking so everything is cash.

HelloMrBond · 22/02/2023 17:23

I always have my card with me but also carry around £100 in cash. I have never paid using my phone and don’t intend to.

LucyLeave · 22/02/2023 17:26

I'd expect to pay cash for items off FB Marketplace. I'd only accept cash as payment if selling too.

verdantverdure · 22/02/2023 17:29

You get cash out for something like that.

You don't expect a stranger to give you all their bank details on the doorstep.

I went to a restaurant last week and wanted to use the Wallet on my phone to pay but was told they only accepted cash! Luckily I had just enough cash in my purse to pay but it was close!

Although I prefer to use my phone to pay for meals out, I still carry my purse with my credit card and a little bit of cash but I like the added security of using my phone with facial recognition.

mydogisthebest · 22/02/2023 17:31

I always have some cash and my bank cards. No way am I using a phone. See too many people try to pay for something with their phone and it has run out of charge or some other problem

Witsendwilly · 22/02/2023 17:33

Phone only. I normally do a bank or Revolut transfer from the phone on the doorstep when buying stuff.

Why insist on cash?

Catoneverychair · 22/02/2023 17:35

I barely ever carry cash but for purchases likes this I'd take cash out.

I carry my phone which I can also use to take cash out with from the cashpoints.

Because it involves no exchange of personal data.

SpangoDweller · 22/02/2023 17:39

I wouldn’t do a bank transfer with a stranger but would PayPal them or something like that. Like others have said though, I would get cash out specifically for a situation like this.

Renoir56 · 22/02/2023 17:39

What's wrong with a bank transfer? The money goes into your account instantly. The only details the other person needs is name, sort code and account number which is what would be on a cheque book. What's the issue?

Alwayswonderedwhy · 22/02/2023 17:39

I don't use cash and usually just have my phone on me.
If I was picking something up from market place I'd take cash but I also have no issue with someone transferring the money to me if I'm selling.

IHeartGeneHunt · 22/02/2023 17:40

I have my bank card and cash.

Maverickess · 22/02/2023 17:41

In this situation I'd expect to pay the way I'd been asked to before I arrived to collect, so if you'd said cash then I'd get cash out and not expect to be able to do a bank transfer or pay on card.

Generally I use my card, I don't use my phone because I don't trust it not to die at the wrong moment, but if I'm using somewhere that wants cash then I'll get it out.

I've been on the other side of people trying to use their phone and it won't co-operate and they don't have a card or cash with them so are stuffed unless someone helps them.

Bluelightbaby · 22/02/2023 17:42

Can’t remember the last time I paid in cash, complete ball ache as no cash points near me.

I use my phone to pay for everything, don’t ever take my purse out. All store cards are also on my phone

Alwayswonderedwhy · 22/02/2023 17:43

People saying they wouldn't do bank transfer with a stranger. Did you never use cheques?
What do you think people can do with your account number other than give you money?

Witsendwilly · 22/02/2023 17:43

PuttingDownRoots · 22/02/2023 17:37

Because it involves no exchange of personal data.

Genuine question. What’s the concern with sharing account number and sort code?

Grumpybutfunny · 22/02/2023 17:44

Can't remember the last time I paid cash. Bought something off market place and just PayPal it across. Would get cash if I really wanted it but would put me off. I do carry cards as we have multiple accounts but use my watch and phone for most things

RandomUsernameHere · 22/02/2023 17:47

No I don't carry cash or cards. If selling something I'd be happy to be paid by Revolut, bank transfer or PayPal, in fact I'd much prefer it.

soboredoflooking · 22/02/2023 17:48

Think they hoping for a freebie! Cheeky git especially when u already told them can only which is the norm when collecting goods. I'd also insist on cash incase they tried to claim it back from their bank.

I've never got a lot of money on me but I always have some usually £10ish could be more or less. Need it for parking, and a few things that I go to that are cash only.

Leakingtoilet · 22/02/2023 17:49

No I don't. I only have my phone and sometimes a couple of pound coins for supermarket trollies.

Phone pay was a revelation for me as I was constantly losing debit cards. Now I don't need to worry!
