Do people not carry cash or bank cards anymore?

Recently sold an item on FB Marketplace. The buyer was annoyed that I insisted they had to pay in cash (they offered me a bank transfer) as they said they didn't have cash or a bank card with them (I did tell them before they came to collect; the annoyance wasn't due to turning up and then finding out).

So ... got to wondering whether lots of people don't routinely carry cash or cards any more but just rely on using their phone.

I use cash to pay in shops. And carry a card. I have never used apple pay neither. No need

Newwardrobe · 22/02/2023 18:54

I was behind a young lady in Aldi today who was fannying about trying to pay with her phone, she must have said 'hang on a minute' to the cashier umpteen times .
I pay with cash as much as I can .

I often only carry my phone but if I was going to collect something o would ask cash or PayPal

I always have cash and bank card, never used a phone to pay for anything.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/02/2023 18:58

Don’t use my phone to pay. I use cards or cash. Usually cash.

You can get cash out of post offices easily. Plus it keeps them going and needed. But I’m rural and we don’t have any banks left so cash is still king here.

WorriedMillie · 22/02/2023 19:32

I carry cards with me, rarely cash, but if I know I’ll need some, I do. I’d expect to pay cash in the above instance too
My phone battery inexplicably dropped really quickly today, so there’s no way I’d just rely on my phone…

To be fair I've been behind many an older person fannying about with their purse or wallet counting notes and change, taking forever 🙂

userxx · 22/02/2023 19:42

I only take my phone out these days, I've ditched my purse and it's a liberating feeling, the amount of times I went into panic stations thinking I'd lost the bloody thing. Goodbye purse.

EasterlyDirection · 22/02/2023 20:08

It's the people using cash and cards that faff about and slow everything down IME. Can't remember ever noticing anyone faffing for more than a few seconds with a phone. If mine asks for the card to be inserted and I haven't got it I just switch to another and use that (I have 2 debit and 1 credit cards on my phone). If my phone went flat (which never happens as its fairly new) I'd use my Apple watch which still works without the phone. I do keep an emergency tenner in my phone case but can't remember the last time I needed it. However I do keep some cash at home and would expect to use it for anything up to about £50 on marketplace.

JunkinDonuts · 22/02/2023 20:18

I never pay via my phone, simply because most of the time I forget to take my phone out with me.

HouseofHolbein · 22/02/2023 20:43

I take cash out for marketplace purchases. Everything else I use my watch. Just stopped using one wool shop because it's cash only and I never have any on me.

clarrylove · 22/02/2023 21:04

For FB purchases, always cash. I sell a lot on there too and would expect cash. Often there's not a great signal where I live for some phone networks. Also I don't do banking on my phone, neither do my other family members, so I'd have to leave them on the doorstep, lock the door, go upstairs, kick my H off the PC where he's working to log in and check my bank. Too much of a faff.

bananaboats · 22/02/2023 21:13

I'd prefer to do a bank transfer in this scenario. I never carry cash and it would be hassle to lift out there's not

feellikeanalien · 22/02/2023 21:20

Card or cash. A few shops near me only take cash or payment in cash up to a certain amount.

Ir2urw · 22/02/2023 21:20

I never carry cash, but I'd of checked before hand that bank transfer/PayPal was OK for something like this.

Snugglemonkey · 22/02/2023 21:37

I very rarely take my purse anymore. I just use my phone.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 22/02/2023 21:39

No I usually just use Apple Pay or transfer to friends.

A stranger I'd probably get cash out for but it is a pain. I'd rather PayPal.

It would be difficult if you relied only on yr phone and yr battery died, I know someone who did this and couldn’t buy her train ticket

I usually have a power bank on me

Oh and Apple Pay still works on my phone after it dies

Tryingtokeepgoing · 22/02/2023 21:43

I’m with those that don’t carry cards or cash routinely, but if I was collecting something I’d bought on FB then I’d make sure I had some cash. Or would ask beforehand if a bank transfer was okay. But I don’t pay for anything with actual cash nowadays - though I did get some out this week to tip the John Lewis delivery guys who lugged a load of new furniture into my house :)

Saltywalruss · 22/02/2023 21:44

Yesof course lots of people carry cards and cash.

Saltywalruss · 22/02/2023 21:46

Carrying emergency cash or a card would be a lot lighter and take up much less space!

Oblomov23 · 22/02/2023 21:48

FB or eBay selling you always insist on cash on collection, so they don't transfer it but then cancel. I always have phone, card, and cash.

I use my phone for day to day, grabbing something on the way home from work or if I happen to be out. Would take my card if I am going out shopping or to the supermarket as every now and then phone doesn't register and the machine asks you to "please insert card", bit embarrassing of you don't have your card! Yes I would definitely get cash out if I was specifically going to collect something of Facebook market place etc. Also I still get cash out if going on a night out or on holiday, just feel safer having a bit of cash as a backup in case somewhere doesn't take it .
