Has anyone else tried omeprazole?

I got prescribed this by a Doctor but have an irrational fear of taking new medication, as I reacted badly to something years ago and ended up quite ill. Has anyone had a reaction to it? Does it help acid indigestion quickly?
Grateful for any replies/help to put my mind at ease. I'm desperate to get rid of this acid reflux. Think I just need a bit of encouragement to take it. Fully accept I'm being irrational.
Thank you x

I have taken this regularly for years, with no ill effects.

cocksstrideintheevening · 21/02/2023 14:40

Yes I've taken it for years, no issues.

Dt's had it from birth for over a year due to reflux.

Sage321 · 21/02/2023 14:41

@Artisticpaint Do you take it after food? X

You do as advised by the doctor.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 21/02/2023 14:42

I’ve taken it since my last pregnancy. No adverse side effects.
I take it before breakfast each morning

FfeminyddCymraeg · 21/02/2023 14:42

I took it for years with no issues. I eventually moved on to lansoprazole as I found it worked better for me.

I just take mine whenever I remember - no set point in the day.

Yolanda524 · 21/02/2023 14:42

I’ve taken it at times with no problems.
As a nurse it’s one of the most common drugs that are prescribed for patients and never had an issue with any of my patients on it.
Saying that that is all anecdotal and everyone can react differently to any medication.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 21/02/2023 14:43

It’s not like gaviscon - it doesn’t give immediate relief.

MyBloodyBrother · 21/02/2023 14:43

I’ve taken it for years due to stomach ulcers and reflux. It works brilliantly

MelaniesFlowers · 21/02/2023 14:43

I’m currently prescribed it in pregnancy. Had no ill effects, just take it when I remember every day.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 21/02/2023 14:43

Also you can take other indigestion relief for a couple of hours before or after

No, at least 30 minutes before food

thaegumathteth · 21/02/2023 14:44

PPI like omeprazole are the most commonly prescribed drug in the UK.

I don't take it all the time but I take it when I also take naproxen - no issues at all.

NoNoNoMYDoIt · 21/02/2023 14:47

I was prescribed it for my dog after he developed acid reflux after a stomach bug. He was fine on it but didn't like the capsules. Not sure that helps much, but it's such a common drug. He's a teeny 7.5kg as well.

JorisBonson · 21/02/2023 14:47

I take it every day and have done for a few years. It's a godsend.

AreBearsCatholic · 21/02/2023 14:49

Took it in pregnancy and since, it’s a miracle. No side effects for me.

Chewbecca · 21/02/2023 14:50

DH has with good results and no side effects.

It's available over the counter in the US as a 14.day course to help heartburn and indigestion (& works!).

ScentOfAMemory · 21/02/2023 14:52

It's a very very common medicine and prescribed for lots of things.
Word of caution- it does what it says on the tin- suppresses stomach acid in conditions like h.pylori, hiatus hernia, GERD etc.
If you take it for a long time, it can lead to you having too little stomach acid- symptoms of which are almost the same as too much. I had it for h.pylori some years ago, and the GP told me to keep taking it. My symptoms continued and the GP sent me for a gastro check up. The gastroenterologist said he was fed up of the over-prescribing of PPIs which in the short term and for specific conditions were fine but not long term.

IHeartGeneHunt · 21/02/2023 15:01

I took it when I was pregnant and it's a complete miracle, I went from waking up at night with acid choking me to zero pain or reflux. Brilliant stuff.

Same! Now I just wake needing to wee, or with restless legs, or from my toddler 😂

BorisJohnsonsHair · 21/02/2023 15:25

Although it's useful in the short term it can be horrendous to come off it.

I had terrible repercussions from giving it up.

If I have a gastritis flare-up I take it for a week, watch my diet then come off it.

My mum has been on it for years and now struggles to digest many foods, which I think is down to her stomach acid being too low. Every time she's tried to come off at she has really bad reflux, so ends up going back on it again.

I take it every morning before breakfast

Toddlerteaplease · 21/02/2023 20:57

My cat is as prescribed it today. Apparently she's had it before. But I can't remember, so she must have been on with it!

WhisperingAutistic · 21/02/2023 21:03

I'm on lansoprazole as omeprazole didn't work for me. It didn't give me any side effects though.
