Has anyone else tried omeprazole?

I got prescribed this by a Doctor but have an irrational fear of taking new medication, as I reacted badly to something years ago and ended up quite ill. Has anyone had a reaction to it? Does it help acid indigestion quickly?
Grateful for any replies/help to put my mind at ease. I'm desperate to get rid of this acid reflux. Think I just need a bit of encouragement to take it. Fully accept I'm being irrational.
Thank you x

Just found this thread. I've been prescribed it and of course now my reflux has calmed down so not sure whether to take it now.
Reading some of these posts, I wish I had known about it when I was pregnant..I used to get through big bottles of Gaviscon as everything I ate and drank caused horrendous heartburn. And then DS had awful colicky symptoms when he was born and I was b/f and the doctor didn't even suggest it!

Pippy239 · 15/08/2023 13:42

I had no problem taking it daily for h. Pylori, came off easily and just take it occasionally for acid stomach.
I now make sure i either eat kimchi, sauerkraut, greek yogurt or have an apple cider vinegar shot or kombucha on a regular basis to feed my gut friendly bacteria to keep an even keel.

Myworldjusthim · 15/08/2023 13:55

I’m on it. Been taking it for over a decade. Tried all of them and only this one works for me. I take first thing in morning.

Thanks for your posts. I'll give it a try in that case! My DH likes sauerkraut but i can't stand it..just the smell makes me feel sick!

Taken long term can cause issues. My mother ended up with osteoporosis from similar medicine long term and I had anaemia after a few years on omeprazole. Coming off it is horrendous. I came off it and switched to slippery elm, which (after a month of getting side effects from stopping omeprazole) worked just as well and now only need slippery elm occasionally.

Abdolute godsend for me! Previous pregnancies I've had to swig gaviscon out of the bottle. Teeth were ruined with gaviscon and acid and loads of fillings in pregnancy (ive never had one outside of pregnancy). Even water just refluxed (also severe sickness). This time, omeprazole from start and I can eat and drink anything. Life-changing really. I'm also taking cyclizine at night only. Previously reflux and sickness (20ish times a day, whole pregnancy). This time- virtually nothing- even kept running. Midwife showed me charts of my growth on the 3 pregnancies. From bottom of normal on chart previous pregnancies to top of normal on chart this time we've got the acid reflux and vomiting under control. We discussed how good all her patients on omeprazole feel. I'd take it, op. I'm also taking aspirin so it helps with stomach irritation with this too. I haven't even had any gaviscon yet (3rd trimester).

StarlightLady · 22/08/2023 07:52

It was a life changer for me.

Zebedee55 · 22/08/2023 07:52

I've took it for years. No problems whatsoever.

MzHz · 22/08/2023 08:04

It’s a game changer!

you take it in the morning and it helps you all day, it’s not a drug to relieve symptoms, it prevents them

i found out I’m lacto intolerant and was sensitive to gluten, few changes in diet generally to reduce blood sugar, inflammation etc and I’ve just halved my dose after 10 years!

BooseysMom · 14/09/2023 10:10

I'm on the last week of them and it's definitely a game changer! My heartburn disappeared instantly! I do get a metallic taste in the mouth though and have piled on almost a stone in weight but think that's menopause related. I'm worried the heartburn will return as soon as I finish the pills.

WhatapityWapiti · 14/09/2023 10:13

Joining the chorus of “it’s a game changer”. If you have only ever had reflux treated with antacids before you will be amazed at how great it feels to no longer have a burning throat when you wake up every day.

I would be cautious and try to change your diet first. There has been a recent study tentatively linking to dementia.

I wouldn't take it due to the existing prevalence of dementia in my family. One of my parents developed dementia in their early 60s (first signs) and had been taking a proton pump inhibitor for 25 years or so.

Actually - you take it 30-60 minutes BEFORE food

AgnesX · 14/09/2023 10:50

Works like a dream, no side effects. Had to change to lanzeprazole as Omeprazole interacts with other meds I take.

You shouldn't have any problems.

Angrymum22 · 14/09/2023 10:51

They are very effective for reflux but longterm use can result in low absorption of some vitamins and minerals. I put down muscle and joint pains to peri menopause. I started HRT in the hope it would help but had no relief. After a bit of research I found references to B12 and magnesium malabsorption.
I now take supplements but not at the same time as PPI. I take supplements in the evening so they are not affected by the PPI.

It will. You will get rebound acid.
It's better to wean off or prepare to use lots of gaviscon. The rebound acid lasts about 2 weeks

Velvian · 14/09/2023 11:17

Thank you.
I will mention this to my consultant next time I see him. I see it is only a month or so old.

justasking111 · 14/09/2023 14:49

I've a stomach bug so not taking it this week because I think I need the acid to kill whatever has floored me for the last six days. I do worry about osteoporosis because I've been on these medications for two decades sliding hiatus hernia and GERD. BUT short term fine

CriticalAlert · 14/09/2023 15:37

I had to take omeprazole when I was on mega doses of Ibuprofen for broken rib pain. It was fantastic. I am now taking it for indigestion and it's still great!!

amicissimma · 14/09/2023 21:22

Obviously it won't work for everyone, but I've heard anecdotes of eating pineapple after meals, specially in the evening, being helpful. It's counter-intuitive, but it could be worth a try before committing to medication.

Oh no! I have taken the last one today so have completed the month's prescription. I will prepare myself for the worse then!

RollingStream · 19/09/2023 13:54

Our baby was on it from 3 to 6 months for reflux. No noticeable side effects and was very effective. Went from losing weight and hours crying each day to gaining rapidly and being a happy calm baby.

Yalta · 19/09/2023 14:01

I think there was an article about these type of medications and it gave an increased risk in stomach cancer and whole load of other stuff.

Personally I hate taking medication and have found other ways round my acid reflux. Mine was linked to certain types of food and eating at the wrong time of day, eating once per day rather than the same amount spread out over a few hours
