I've been craving good movie scores lately. I'm leaning towards orchestral but I'm open to songs too.

What are your favourite themes and songs from movies?

TIA

I was thinking something on the epic/dramatic side but I'm open to any movie soundtrack really.

I often listen to a Spotify playlist called "Cinematic Chillout" when I'm working. Lots of lovely themes.

So1invictus · 20/02/2023 16:35

The Mission is superb.

I love The Grand Budapest Hotel. But it’s a bit niche. 😁

We went to a rather wonderful orchestral concert of Hans Zimmer’s most famous / popular movie and television scores just before Christmas. I’d imagine there’s a ‘Greatest Hits’ type recording of the favourites of his originals and an orchestral version as well - I’d certainly recommend the latter.

I really like the Reader and Atonement. Not exactly cheery, but beautiful.

omnishambles · 20/02/2023 16:42

The English Patient

Once upon a time in America.

Oh and along the same lines, Theory of Everything.

Like all the Hans Zimmer scores - Inception, Dark Knight, Interstellar. All of them really.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 20/02/2023 16:46

I love the If Beale Street Could Talk score. Composer is Nicholas Brittell. It's so beautiful.

Other film composers I like are Hans Zimmer, Clint Mansell, Johann Johannsson. There are loads of good score playlists on Spotify, which is a good way to discover composers.

The Bridgerton soundtrack is great.

Also the best of John Williams - so many epic ones!

AdInfinitum12 · 20/02/2023 16:47

I love The Lost Boys soundtrack

Smoothlines · 20/02/2023 16:47

Last of the Mohicans is a fave of mine.

Murder on the Orient Express, Richard Rodney Bennett - the 1974 film. Excellent score.

Opening theme from Get Carter, which I think was a 1971 film.

Ennio Morricone's music for the Man with No Name trilogy.

These might not be as evocative for people who didn't grow up in the 1970s!

And metal gear solid series

Hoolihan · 20/02/2023 16:53

The Drop that Contained the Sea by Christopher Tin (and his other albums). It's not actually a film score but feels like one, he is a composer who trained with Hans Zimmer.

IdaGoodnight · 20/02/2023 16:56

The Piano - modern composer (Nyman)
Shine - classical old timers
David Holmes - Oceans 11 etc…

i thought the music for Sicaro was sublime (Johan Johansson).

BreakingPointAgain · 20/02/2023 16:59

The secret life of Walter Mitty
