I've been craving good movie scores lately. I'm leaning towards orchestral but I'm open to songs too.

What are your favourite themes and songs from movies?

TIA

Grease 2 - the GOAT.

It's a game, but the Skyrim soundtrack is brilliant.

I'm not great on movies I'm afraid...but am fond of His dark materials soundtrack (bbc tv series, not the film). The doctor who ones.

I also like a lot of video game soundtracks - the God of War, Assassins Creed, Final Fantasy (9 and 10 mainly), but there's a playlist on spotify of popular ones.

I find them all good for focusing...something familiar but no distracting lyrics to sing along to. Plus good video game music is designed to keep you immersed so I've read.

Has to be Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings soundtrack, surely! Gorgeous music.

AllAboutMargot · 20/02/2023 17:26

Carter Burwell. He composed the music to O Brother Where Art Thou? and other Coen Bros movies. The theme music to The Spanish Prisoner by him is very good also.

Thanks for this thread - I'm happy to recommend his music and to read others'.

Lost Boys and Cruel Intentions are great. American pie also!

I really like Thomas Newman scores. The Passengers or Little Women (1994).

The piece of music in the scene where Beth dies, think it's called In The Valley of the Shadows, makes me blub. So lovely.

I’m rather keen on the little women singing Land o’ the Leal by the piano in Little Women.

NanTheWiser · 20/02/2023 17:47

“Lawrence of Arabia”, starring Peter O’Toole, made in 1962, and the score written by Maurice Jarre. I loved it so much, I bought the LP, which will show my age of 76!

I love that as well. This soundtrack is one of my favourites. I like the track The Laurence Boy. Thomas Newman and James Newton Howard are among my favourite film composers.

Some great ideas here I might investigate.

Midnight Cowboy is my suggestion.

Midnight cowboy was written by John Barry and I am a huge fan of his. He did some of the Bond films but also Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves and other films and TV programmes and some adverts too. It's all great.

VillanellePinkDress · 20/02/2023 22:26

Moulin Rouge Soundtrack
Top Gun for nostalgia!
Fame

Custardbanana · 20/02/2023 22:33

Baz Lurman's Romeo & Juliet
American Beauty
The Beach
Trainspotting
Lock Stock & Two Smokin Barrells
Fight Club
Matrix
Human Traffic

Ok, so none of them are particularly orchestral but they're all banging soundtracks.

Brewinastorm · 20/02/2023 22:42

I really love the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer to the movie Tears of the Sun. Probably better to watch the movie to appreciate the music more though!

cakeorwine · 20/02/2023 22:46

One of my favourites is The Big Blue. But you have to see the film first. The French version, Not the American one. And get the correct soundtrack by Eric Serra.

It takes me to the sea everytime

NotMyDayJob · 20/02/2023 22:46

Last of the Mohicans as already suggested and Shakespeare in love

SlightlyJaded · 20/02/2023 22:56

Immediately thought of Ennio Morricone for The Mission - just beautiful.

Most John Barry and Hans Zimmerman soundtracks are going to be good.

Baz Luhrman Romeo and Juliet soundtrack is really good - eclectic and different. Everything from Gospel to Radiohead. I also like the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.

Annoyingly (for legal reasons I suspect) the film Lost Highway (David Lynch) features he ridiculously beautiful and haunting Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil, but it wasn't included on the soundtrack.

But for anyone that hasn't heard it before:
