Why the fuck does he do this?

I work in a small town and we have local shops including 2 butchers, I used to use one of these for all my weekly purchases. 18 years ago I ordered some steak for DH bday, I had 2yo DS with me and was pregnant. About 20seconds after leaving the shop DS suddenly looked at me, his eyes rolled back and he had a seizure. A passerby called an ambulance, and we raced off to hospital. Fuck knows what happened to my brain in this time but I literally forgot the visit to the butchers completely.

A week later I was passing and he ran out screaming at me that I had wasted his time and cost him money. I remembered and was mortified. Apologised profusely, paid for the steak which he'd put in the freezer, and left. I ordered my turkey for Xmas the following week and was told I was blacklisted and to fuck off. Ok, I start using another butcher.

Since this happened, for nearly 20 years, this butcher has starred at me, left his shop to watch me walk down the street, glared at me, dirty looks etc. He sometimes stands behind the counter with his arms crossed a meat cleaver in his hand in what I assume is meant to be a very threatening manner. I don't give a shit normally but today he muttered 'state of that' I passed and I am feeling unwell and I just don't understand what is doing this for? My office is literally 50 m from his shop. I have literally not spoken to this man since he told me he wouldn't sell me a turkey 18 years ago and said "OK, not to worry" and left his shop.

What is he gaining? What a twat.

Sorry it's a bit long, I needed to get it off my chest!

FOR 20 YEARS a butcher has been giving you 'funny looks' for running off without the meat you said you wanted... After screaming at you and telling you to fuck off?! Confused

Utter nonsense. I live in a village, and so do many people I know - in several other villages. None of us knows anyone like this butcher that the OP claims to know, and claims has been harassing her for 20 years. Such a ludicrous, sweeping generalisation.

That's so mental that I think I would write him a letter to explain what happened all those years ago. I honestly would hate this! Not that I think you need to apologise but I would need him to understand (cos I have self-esteem issues 🤣, sad but true!)

No, he told me to fuck off when I tried to order a turkey and I haven't spoken to him since.

It's a small town - not a village. We are not far from Glossop hence the Royston Vassey jokes

You should absolutely kill him with kindness and maintain your dignity at all times @unclebuck and every grown up poster here who says that is absolutely right. I’m not one of those grown ups so I would be posting Quorn through his letter box every night for a year or sign the silly cunt up for a year’s subscription to Linda McCartney meals. That’s the kind of stuff that makes butchers cry. It will also make it easier to smile and wave at the dickless idiot and his Fraudian meat cleaver.

You have to ask him what his problem is!

If he said that I would have at least said “excuse me? Who do you think you are talking to like that?”

I would also put a review on Google as a PP suggested.

He needs to know that he cannot bully you and hopefully he’ll respond on the review and you can say exactly what you said here - that you would go every week and spend X amount, then your son had a seizure and that you forgot to pay for the steaks but you did so as soon as you went in to order something else.

I don’t even think he’s held a grudge for this long.
I think he knows that you are intimidated by him and he enjoys being a bully.

Sorry for being thick but even after your follow-up explanation, I still don't understand why he thought he had an issue in the first place.

Did you forget to go back and collect/pay for the birthday steak a week later -- was that it? Because the seizure incident just made you forget all about it? (understandable)

So when you passed by the shop, it was past the intended collection date? And so he was like, oh there's that woman who ordered that steak and never came back to collect it and pay?

Obviously he's still being a horrendous arsehole regardless but I'm just trying to work out what the trigger was.
