Are you able to play chess?

I think it’s great to pass the time, we’ve even got a magnetic travel set to take on the plane.

Had some entertaining comments from flight staff about it but was surprised to learn lots of people have never played. I just assumed it was one of those things everyone plays at some point!

yes, used to play with my Dad, now play with my son

WeWereInParis · 18/02/2023 21:51

I know the rules, I'm not very good though and haven't played in years

hiredandsqueak · 18/02/2023 21:51

Yes df taught me when I was about five. I taught my dc at about the same age, ds played for County and regularly plays online.

bikiniisland · 18/02/2023 21:52

My Dad taught me years ago, I'm a bit rusty in the rules but can remember which moves most pieces can do. I'm not a logical thinker though so would be really shit at it!

msmatcha · 18/02/2023 21:52

Used to be on school chess team! Have taught both DC.

msmatcha · 18/02/2023 21:53

Think it's a life skill. Like monopoly and cluedo.

FunnysInLaJardin · 18/02/2023 21:53

Yes, we can all play chess and often do on holiday. DS1 is the best although DH would disagree!

Rodneyisaplonker · 18/02/2023 21:54

Yes of course, it’s not exactly complex. It’s like asking if you know how to play snap. Chess is a very common game.

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 18/02/2023 21:55

Yes, since I was 7/8.

sanityisamyth · 18/02/2023 21:56

I get the gist of it (know which pieces can move where) but can't figure out how you're supposed to guess where your opponent is supposed to go in 5, 10, 15 moves time.

Not really like snap now, is it? Rules are a tad more complex...

Timeforabiscuit · 18/02/2023 21:59

I taught my daughters, also taught them poker as its a similar mental exercise. It's very popular at their school too.

The queen's gambit tv series I think helped with popularity (brilliant show if anyone hasn't watched it)

dootball · 18/02/2023 21:59

@Rodneyisaplonker

I'd be interested to know how you play snap if it is similarly complex to chess.

Learning how the pieces move may not be but getting actually good certainly is

Do you always try and make yourself look big by making others feel small?

I used play at a club level and like to do the puzzles you get in some newspapers. Learning to read the notation really helped bring along my game but I don’t really play anymore after the partner I learned with turned nasty in a big way and spoiled it for me.
I feel guilty for not teaching my kid but it brings up all kinds of weird feelings when I start to slip back into the headspace so I don’t play anymore.

megletthesecond · 18/02/2023 22:00

Yes, but badly.

MrsHGWells · 18/02/2023 22:02

Yes love a game, our son asks to play over breakfast on weekends.

the Queens Gambit hopefully will bring back a renewed vigour and interest.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 18/02/2023 22:02

Badly.

catinboots123 · 18/02/2023 22:03

I know the moves but I wouldn't say I could play

HarrietSchulenberg · 18/02/2023 22:03

I've started to play recently, just so I can play with DS (15). He thrashes me in 5 mins unless I enlist his older brother's help. At least I'm learning the moves.

I must be thick as fuck then.

Tourmalines · 18/02/2023 22:07

It’s hardly like a game of snap at all . It’s strategy and skill .

SenecaFallsRedux · 18/02/2023 22:08

I used to play years ago, but have not played for a very long time. I did once get to dress up as a human chess piece for a living game.

Is it though?

Scr3wed · 18/02/2023 22:10

Yeah, I can play it. My dad taught me when I was about 10. I remember when I was about 14, my friend and I were sitting outside our old school one evening, playing chess. We were smoking and chatting, and a couple of police officers came around the corner wanting to know what we were up to. They checked what we were smoking (nothing illegal), realised we were a couple on nerds, and told us off for being on the school grounds. They told us we could finish the game, but after that, to go home, and stop smoking 😳
