Are you able to play chess?

I think it’s great to pass the time, we’ve even got a magnetic travel set to take on the plane.

Had some entertaining comments from flight staff about it but was surprised to learn lots of people have never played. I just assumed it was one of those things everyone plays at some point!

Yes of course, it’s not exactly complex. It’s like asking if you know how to play snap. Chess is a very common game.

I can play but am not much good as I can't plan ahead more than two moves.

It's a fantastic game and very beautiful with all the different pieces. I love it and recently bought a (cheap) chess set.

MammasKumquat · 18/02/2023 22:12

My 12 yo is teaching me to play at the moment.

PacificallyRequested · 18/02/2023 22:12

My brother and I learned when we were kids. He always beat me. I know how the pieces move but am rubbish at thinking ahead and the strategy element of it. I also used to get very bored waiting for him to make a move!

Undertheoldlindentree · 18/02/2023 22:12

Yes - it was a timetabled lesson at my state school. Pre National Curriculum. I remember we had little note books for jotting down moves. Still pretty rubbish at it, but glad I had the opportunity.

Shodan · 18/02/2023 22:12

Yes I play. Or at least, I can play. I find it a bit tedious though tbh.

Both my sons play and always beat me and have done for years (probably why I find it tedious 😂)

It's not complex? I assume you're Magnus Carlsen then, yes? If not I assume you've played against him?

BeBraveAndBeKind · 18/02/2023 22:13

Yes, DH taught me how to play on our second date. He taught the DC during lockdown. I've only beaten him a handful of times in the last 27 years but it always feels like a great victory when I do.

lol seriously `? I’m actually so embarrassed for you. Yes. Sweetie. No one can play a simple game of chess unless they can play at master levels.

off you pop now.

CafeCremeMerci · 18/02/2023 22:16

@Rodneyisaplonker

Rodney isn't the only one is he?!

@confettipig

I used to, but unfortunately my Brain Fog means I can't think ahead to the degree required. I loved Rummikub too, but same applies to a certain extent.

I feel very guilty for all the times I couldn't understand why people just couldn't do certain things.

Clevs · 18/02/2023 22:17

I've never played. Wouldn't have a clue how to!

Littlepixie85 · 18/02/2023 22:19

Yes was taught as a child and I still love the game, can't wait to teach my kids when they are old enough!

MyOldFriendTime · 18/02/2023 22:21

Ha ha @Rodneyisaplonker you compared chess to a game of snap and you're embarrassed for me? 😆

MyOldFriendTime · 18/02/2023 22:22

Rodney isn't the only one is he?!

🤣😂😆

QuickFire1WordPoster · 18/02/2023 22:24

Yes

Deadringer · 18/02/2023 22:24

Yes when I was 10 I played against 4 masters simultaneously.
I lost every game.

Mudandpuddle · 18/02/2023 22:27

I play both chess and snap. I win at snap 50% of time and at chess 0% of the time.

Mudandpuddle · 18/02/2023 22:27

I'm trying to convince the snap player in our house to take up chess to increase my chances of winning.

Clevs · 18/02/2023 22:17

It's as easy as snap. Honest.

Kamisaka · 18/02/2023 22:39

Absolutely fucking not. DH taught me years ago and I just had no interest. Forgot everything and would never want to remember tbh. Not for me.

Allmarbleslost · 18/02/2023 22:39

Nope! DH has taught the dc but I can't concentrate on anything I'm not interested in. I'll stick to snap.

Floralnomad · 18/02/2023 22:41

We can all play in our house but we don’t as there are other board games that we prefer.

APlaceOfGreaterSafety · 18/02/2023 22:43

I know the moves but I’m not much good at it.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 18/02/2023 22:44

Badly but I can play as can my 11 yo & 8 yo.

Kamisaka · 18/02/2023 22:44

Love a game of dobble though

Wouldn't put it in the same league as snap
