Are you able to play chess?

I think it’s great to pass the time, we’ve even got a magnetic travel set to take on the plane.

Had some entertaining comments from flight staff about it but was surprised to learn lots of people have never played. I just assumed it was one of those things everyone plays at some point!

Comparing Snap to Chess is like saying a bicycle is just like a car.

Worlds of difference.

Radi04 · 19/02/2023 09:45

Chess is amazing! I love it and I dream about it 😳

Radi04 · 19/02/2023 09:45

Wasted three hours yesterday playing blitz chess

GimmeBiscuits · 19/02/2023 09:47

Haven't played in a really long time. My late dad taught me to play.

cakeorwine · 19/02/2023 09:47

DS was very pleased to get me in mate after 5 moves recently. But I had had some wine before hand.

shouldhavetakenmorenotice · 19/02/2023 09:56

Nope. We were a scrabble and Rummikub family.

DH's family thought they were a Rummikub family until the first Christmas I came. I beat them so comprehensively they won't play now.

So DH is teaching DS chess 🤣

Yes of course, it’s not exactly complex. It’s like asking if you know how to play snap. Chess is a very common game.

If you don't think chess is complex you're playing it wrong!

spottie · 19/02/2023 10:00

No I can't, but I thought it was complicated. Now I know it's like Snap I'll master it this morning!

Mojoyoyo · 19/02/2023 10:01

Yes I love chess but nobody I know plays it

AlwaysLatte · 19/02/2023 10:02

Yes, especially just at the moment as my 12 year old DS is obsessed. We play both a physical board and online, and he takes a magnetic set in to school to play with his friend at break times.

PositiveLife · 19/02/2023 10:02

I know how to set up the board and how the pieces move. Like others, I can't work out what's going to happen in 5/10 moves time. I expect I could learn the more strategic side, but I just don't have the enthusiasm to Blush

I can actually hear your haughty tone of voice.

Prawn go dooka dooka?

DH played at County level and taught the kids. I thought I could play but it's pointless against him bevause he's 10 moves ahead. Our youngest is constantly playing now and in a club and they do game reviews and might as well be talking another language.

GimmeBiscuits · 19/02/2023 11:27

Always good to see a Ghosts fan on here, @MsSupineLickspittle
I once employed the 'dooka dooka' approach in a game of chess against an arrogant guy who told me women couldn't play chess. Three moves later he was in checkmate.

This was when I was young, equally arrogant and quick of brain.

😂 I'll give you a game later

KittensTeaAndCake · 19/02/2023 14:20

Snap you say? Oh I'll try teaching my 2 year old in that case.

Tbf learning how the pieces move isn't complex.

But yes, to learn how to play well is a skill!

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 19/02/2023 19:29

Is there any possibility that Rodney is confusing chess and draughts?

AuntieMarys · 19/02/2023 19:34

No but I play backgammon

MarshaBradyo · 19/02/2023 19:36

Yes

Ds got into it and we’d play together

I find it a bit tense though

mamabear715 · 19/02/2023 19:37

People have taught me, but I'm so impatient. Frustration is more my level. I want to win in 5 mins.. ;-)

LuzzBightyearzz · 19/02/2023 19:40

No I like the idea but too lazy to actually learn it.

Am ace at Snap though.

flutterbyebaby · 19/02/2023 19:42

Yes but I hate it. My son had one of the electronic sets years ago and I borrowed it to play against one of the set grandmasters on there, it must of taken at least a 100 games before I beat the sod, never played it since. My sons all love to play though.

ToiletRollTower · 19/02/2023 19:42

No I can't. I was never taught, my family never bothered with the girls, only taught the boys and played chess with the boys. I did buy a small chess set and I plan to teach myself and then my DCs. It's having the time.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 19/02/2023 19:45

I wouldn't have the faintest idea on how to play chess
