Holy fuck 3 months electric has cost me £1750

That’s extortion…

All electric house, no gas, no oil, electric heating which is allegedly the best on the market..obviously not, have mainly used for the kids rooms at night, I use the wood burner, I try to use as much overnight as possible on the ‘cheaper’ rate, hot water is heated for 3 hours overnight, I set the washing machine to finish at 5.30 am, use the tumble dryer as little as possible but have no way of actually drying stuff…

I have no idea how the feck I’m going to pay the £600 a month direct debit they want from me! That’s 1/2 my rent…Apparently my measly £375 isn’t enough, savings dwindling as is my pay rise, Council tax is about to go up 5% my food bill is astronomical..!! I don’t drink, I don’t smoke! What a fucking joke…

Joyful times ahead…not 😞😞😞

How many storage heaters do you have on?
How many KWh is that for?

Are you definitely on a split rate? The off peak rates have actually come down, although the peak rate is up.

It seems very high. You didn't enter your rates the wrong way round??

Paperplanesfly · 17/02/2023 19:14

Is your washing machine hooked up to the hot water rather than the cold water? I ask as you could be heating water then using it all in the middle of the night with the washing machine. Our entire water tank heats in an hour. Could you set the water to heat after the washing machine has been on and then you may only need to heat the water for an hour or so which would help a bit.

Whatdidisay · 17/02/2023 19:20

Is that what you have actually spent though or is the electric company still doing what they've been warned not to do and vastly over inflating direct debit payments so although it in theory puts you in credit, it is sitting in their accounts earning them interest.
Check you bill and work out your actual usage on the coldest month so far this year and ask them to set direct debit as that.

Check that it is all of your electric on the cheaper night time tariff and not just the circuit your heating is on.

pigsinoodies · 17/02/2023 19:22

Check your actual meter readings are what's on the bill.

Inkpotlover · 17/02/2023 19:23

Why do you need to heat your kids' rooms at night? That must account for a huge chunk of the bill. Can't you just chuck extra duvets on their beds?

mrsbyers · 17/02/2023 19:25

Have you read your meters ? The energy companies can suggest a sky high direct debit but the onus is on you to provide regular readings p

lljkk · 17/02/2023 19:31

OP: have you checked the bill is correct, the KwH agrees with what you see on meter?

dementedpixie · 17/02/2023 19:48

Do you have storage heaters and do you have an economy 7 tariff?

Do you really need heating on overnight? Try reducing the time your hot water is on too.

Have you checked the readings are accurate and that the right reading has been attributed to the right day/night meter?

dementedpixie · 17/02/2023 19:49

Hopefully you'll use less in the next few months as we get warmer weather too

liveforsummer · 17/02/2023 19:50

Cancel your direct debits and just submit neater reads. Pay for what you use - I bet you have credit and I k ow you won't be paying that much

3WildOnes · 17/02/2023 19:52

Even if that is how much you have used over the past three it doesn't justify a dd of £600. These are the coldest months, when you use the most energy. My dd is £250 despite me using over £500 worth of energy over the past month. The benefit of a dd is that you pay less than you use in the colder months and this is balanced by paying more than you use in the summer months. In the summer I was using less than £100pm of energy.

tara66 · 17/02/2023 20:01

Do you use Slow Cookers and Air Fryers? Don't used dish washer; use electric blankets not radiators at night also thick PJs and duvets. Have you got economy light bulbs? Get motion activating lights only for corridors and stairs. That bill is terrible.

Caramac555 · 17/02/2023 20:06

I don't know, but at that price it might be worth paying for an electricians time to review your house and see what is using so much power. Because in April the cap ends and your bills are going to be horrific.

Well they're not, because the cap doesn't 'end' it just goes up a bit - at the same time of year as energy consumption goes down because there's less heating needed.

2DemisSVP · 17/02/2023 20:11

Do you def need 3 hours for water ? We’ve got a massive tank and only need 1 hour to get 3 showers and hot water for washing up.

TheSnowyOwl · 17/02/2023 20:13

Is the Direct Debit going up to £600 because you have a debt?

dementedpixie · 17/02/2023 20:19

Is it an electric shower or does it run from the water cylinder? We have electric showers so need to have the hot water on less. Hot water is only on for 1 hour per day

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 17/02/2023 20:22

What the fuck OP?! That's mental.

I'm also fully electric, storage heaters and immersion, using what I can overnight for dishwasher / washing machine etc. We're using about 7 quid a day. We only have 3 heaters on, admittedly, but the house is comfortable.

Do you have smart heaters, can you see on an app or something how much each one is using overnight? Mine are old, with the dials, and I've made sure they're down as low as I can go without getting getting too cold. Can you only use ones in alternate rooms or something? We've one in the hall that heats the bedrooms around it enough that we don't need ones on in the bedrooms.

Are you absolutely sure the immersion is on only part of the night? It's not boosting during the day or something?

No tumble dryer here - I have a dehumidifier on a timer overnight under an airer. Tumble dryers use a lot, but not over 1k surely?!

You are absolutely, definitely, on economy 7 aren't you? And if you are, they've not billed you the wrong way round and charged you day rate for your night electric and vice versa? That's easy to do if you give the readings manually.

NoGoodUsernamee · 17/02/2023 20:35

Just keep your DD as it is. People seem to be under the impression they need to pay for all they use immediately. Well if the costs were reasonable then you could do that but you cannot. Keep your DD the same and the energy companies will just have to wait. Shame, greedy c**ts. 🙃

Dymaxion · 17/02/2023 20:57

Why are you putting the water on to heat for 3 hours every night ?

Zimzimmer · 17/02/2023 21:04

My storage heaters are the same they seem to be really expensive. They are so expensive, I turned them off there’s no point having them on as they’re not even that warm! Thank god for my wood burner. I have included my heating payment graph for last years usage at today’s rate to give you an idea of our bill. 3 bedroom semi 2 adult children and myself. On a brighter note households without gas supplies are getting a £200 payment. You can tell by the graph when the heating was on. Yikes!

Holy fuck 3 months electric has cost me £1750
Zimzimmer · 17/02/2023 21:17

Oh yes do check your emersion because I saved a lot by not having it on all night.

HundredMilesAnHour · 17/02/2023 21:17

Dymaxion · 17/02/2023 20:57

Why are you putting the water on to heat for 3 hours every night ?

Because that's how long it can take to heat up an electric hot water cylinder from cold. Some take longer than that.

HerbalTeaAndCake · 17/02/2023 21:29

The fucking government really need to put a cap in this! It's absolutely disgusting that the major oil companies doubled their profits last year, whilst people are having to chose between food and heat.

Please stop voting Tory folks. Please 🤷🏻‍♀️🙏
