Holy fuck 3 months electric has cost me £1750

That’s extortion…

All electric house, no gas, no oil, electric heating which is allegedly the best on the market..obviously not, have mainly used for the kids rooms at night, I use the wood burner, I try to use as much overnight as possible on the ‘cheaper’ rate, hot water is heated for 3 hours overnight, I set the washing machine to finish at 5.30 am, use the tumble dryer as little as possible but have no way of actually drying stuff…

I have no idea how the feck I’m going to pay the £600 a month direct debit they want from me! That’s 1/2 my rent…Apparently my measly £375 isn’t enough, savings dwindling as is my pay rise, Council tax is about to go up 5% my food bill is astronomical..!! I don’t drink, I don’t smoke! What a fucking joke…

Joyful times ahead…not 😞😞😞

Wow that's a lot. My flat is all electric, not storage heating though. My bill last month was under £250.

BodyShapeWoes · 17/02/2023 21:32

Those are actual readings I submitted today! I had a debt of around £200 3 months ago then have been paying £275 a month (sorry thought it was £300)

Downstairs we have 2 storage heaters and in the bedrooms we have some random oil thing’s attached to the walls.

Kids rooms are heated over night as they don’t go above 7/8 degrees and duvets didn’t help.

Have taken a reading now & will check back it again in the morning 🤷‍♀️

My storage heaters are the same they seem to be really expensive. They are so expensive, I turned them off there’s no point having them on as they’re not even that warm! Thank god for my wood burner. I have included my heating payment graph for last years usage at today’s rate to give you an idea of our bill. 3 bedroom semi 2 adult children and myself. On a brighter note households without gas supplies are getting a £200 payment. You can tell by the graph when the heating was on. Yikes!

Sorry to jump in, but where is the information about £200 payment for households without gas supply please?

Not much help i know, but if youve no gas, have you had the £200 'off grid' credit to your bill?

Rockbird · 17/02/2023 21:34

My parents have had 6 massive dehumidifiers running 24/7 since Christmas and their bill isn't that high. That's extortionate.

Need to be using an alternative fuel for heating

Don't think it applies if you use electricity for heating. Its for those using LPG, oil, etc

Theres a couple of posters on the thread ive linked to, who have either had a payment or queried that.. i.e if theres no mains gas in your area, how do the elec company know if youve got a woodburner or not?

ukholidayseeker · 17/02/2023 21:53

Turn hot water temp down slightly.
Turn thermostats down to 17
Put draught excluders on bottom of doors.
Tighten window seals.
Use clothes rack instead of tumble dryer.
Bulk cook to use oven/hob less.
Keep doors closed

The fucking government really need to put a cap in this! It's absolutely disgusting that the major oil companies doubled their profits last year, whilst people are having to chose between food and heat.

Please stop voting Tory folks. Please 🤷🏻‍♀️🙏

Don't need to cap it. OP needs to use less electricity.

Rebellious23 · 17/02/2023 21:56

For the beds, put a blanket under the mattress, and you can always put one under the bottom sheet too
The cold air comes up and the blanket under the mattress really helps. My dad has electric only and he put a wool one under after I mentioned it and said it's made a huge difference

stopringingme · 17/02/2023 22:09

@BodyShapeWoes

When I lived in a house with economy 7 and storage heaters, it was between midnight and 7am that was the cheapest.

Don't know if that has changed or if you are using out of these times to heat the DC's rooms.

So you are not using electric to heat the children's bedrooms overnight but the oil heaters? It must be heating the water for 3 hours a night that is using the electric, do you have an emersion heater?

I imagine the oil filled heaters are heated using electricity

Mamamia7962 · 17/02/2023 22:23

I'm confused now because in your OP you say you don't have oil?

dementedpixie · 17/02/2023 22:24

You get electric oil filled heaters

Mamamia7962 · 17/02/2023 22:25

dementedpixie - Ah I understand now, thank you

earsup · 17/02/2023 22:28

Any plug in electric heaters and the immersion will be using either 2kw or 3kw per hour....they eat the electric....they must all be running for hours and hours to cost this much...??

Calmdown14 · 17/02/2023 22:36

I am also all electric (economy 10).

I used 400kwh on the cheap rate in January and it was only £25.

The other 100kwh on the peak rate cost me £90.

Are you sure you gave the readings the right way round? And that your meter is the right way round? I.e that rate 1 on your bill matches rate 1 on the meter? My first bill after fitting the meter was off the charts but they had the rates set in reverse!

Can you post your useage from the bill? Your off peak use in kwh should be way higher than the peak rate.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 17/02/2023 23:03

Are you sure you're only using the oil (filled?) heaters during the off peak times?

Definitely double check you've given the the right reading for day vs night rate by checking which one changes during the daytime.

eldersis · 17/02/2023 23:28

UNLESS you have an economy tarriff. The TIME you use washing machines, cookers or heating makes NO difference. to your costs The energy companies are overloaded and were/ are looking at power cuts because the system can not cope with the demands. They were simply trying to frighten you in order to make people lessen the demand, THEIR benefit not you,
If you are All electric then buy hot water bottles, duvets, Flasks.

Get used to a quick soap and flannel clean up .

An on demand shower looks expensive but BETTER than heating a full boiler that may or may not be used

Trylessonslearned · 18/02/2023 00:06

I feel your shock. My new bill came in very similar and I have gas central heating and log burner. Electric has gone up and up. Even my mortgage interest has gone from £375 to £909 over past year!
