Live bin thread - who will get it wrong?

MeghanThyStallion · 15/02/2023 18:35

DH and I had a disagreement the other day. I said that if we put our bins out early and we put out the wrong one, everyone else would copy us and put out the wrong bin. He said that everyone would know it was wrong and put out the right bin.

Lo and behold, our lovely NDN has put out their waste bin (and ours) but it's the recycling bin collection this week 😱 I'll go out and swap them after I've cooked tea, but I'm interested to see who's right.

Anyone fancy joining me as I tally up the recycling vs waste bins and rejoice in the victory of my prediction?

I only "trust" one neighbour but he was out last night 😬 I got it right but almost certainly won't remember next week 🙄

(I can never remember myself and the leaflet is useless as it doesn't actually say which "group" we're in.)

SomePosters · 15/02/2023 18:45

If I came out and it wasn’t what I was expecting I’d look it up on the council website and put the correct bin out

i reckon plenty of people would just think they were wrong and do what they think everyone else is doing though so I’m with you.

Although maybe the type of people who get their bin out early are more likely to have a clue instead of just checking the neighbours bins and also more likely to look it up?

WeWereInParis · 15/02/2023 18:48

I think the fact your neighbour has put theirs and yours out will increase the chance of people copying, vs there just being one wrong bin out.

LimeCheesecake · 15/02/2023 18:49

Yep 2 wrong bins would have me and dh thinking we’d got it wrong, although we’d look it up. I do rely on the scout master down the street - he’s always got his shit together after bank holiday nonsense.

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 15/02/2023 18:49

We always wait for our neighbour to put his out first.

he is the binfluencer.

WestOfWestminster · 15/02/2023 18:50

This happened to us recently, 2 neighbours put out the wrong bin, but luckily I checked. I don't know how it played out in the morning, hopefully they swapped in time!

xlexiix · 15/02/2023 18:51

I rely solely on my retired neighbors on both sides.
I work long hours and my correct bin is always out when I get home and back when I get back the next day

I genuinely would be screwed if they both move out simultaneously..

WestOfWestminster · 15/02/2023 18:51

And totally agree there are some neighbours I trust more than others to get it right!

InconvenientPeg · 15/02/2023 18:51

Everyone has just given up and leaves all the bins out all the time here. We have a bin store and DH checks the council website every week because he's trying to wean himself off the weather because I took the piss so much 🤣

missnevermind · 15/02/2023 18:52

Yep. Man over the road is always correct. So we wait for him before we put ours out.

Loving Binfluencer

Theunamedcat · 15/02/2023 18:52

I went out with a torch one night because we only have green or dark grey bins and they all look black in the dark

I also check which one is "full" and which is only half full Christmas was a nightmare they were BOTH FULL

Off the weather app, rather than the actual weather 🙄

Where we live, the bins go out the back of the garden in a small lane that goes nowhere except access to the garages and gardens. Everyone leaves all bins there all the time against their garden walls and the bin lorry drives down it and collects them. I don't know what we'll do if we move and have to start remembering not just which week is which, but to actually put them out as well!

PoseyFlump · 15/02/2023 19:05

Our neighbour called my DP the binfluencer the other week 😂 and he is. Always gets it right and always first. We didn't realise others were copying 🤣

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 15/02/2023 19:08

TBF I first heard the term on MN. :)

Dancingtumbleweed · 15/02/2023 19:10

My DH is the binfluence around here. He's got a calender for the bins so we never get it wrong. He regularly goes around swapping the neighbours bins for the correct ones. Then I have to listen to him tell me about who got it wrong this week.

SinnerBoy · 15/02/2023 19:10

I'd deliberately put the wrong one out, then swap, before bed.

Mwou ha ha ha hah!

SinnerBoy · 15/02/2023 19:10

Not really!

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 15/02/2023 19:14

DH and I have always threatened to deliberately put the wrong bin out, as he is the 'binfluencer' who puts the bins out in the evening of the night before, but I get up early enough on bin day that I could swap them to the right ones ... We have never dared to try this though 😂

We have this stupid rule in our town that the bin has to be out by 7 pm the night before, then back in by 10 am the day the bin is collected. Otherwise we run the risk of fines and our bin Not Being Collected.

The council persists in re-iterating this rule. I actually wrote a strongly worded letter to our MP about it. Pointing out such realities as commuting times meaning people were not home and so forth.

Every year we get a little brochure telling ui about the 'rules' and as far as I am aware it is roundly ignored and no fines received.

Pointless.

MeghanThyStallion · 15/02/2023 19:36

I love binfluencer.

I started cooking something but then read the instructions and it takes 1.5 hours so popped that in the oven for tomorrow and have started something quicker. I'll go and check in a min.

OP posts:
MeghanThyStallion · 15/02/2023 19:50

Right. We're at 8 waste bins and 6 recycling bins. This includes two houses who have hedged their bets and put out both.

I'm winning so far!

We are in France and have bin bags that go out on a Tuesday night. Mostly.

So we check with the lady across the road, who is our Bindicator. When hers goes out, ours goes out.

mondaytosunday · 15/02/2023 20:06

My neighbours to the right are always spot on with the bins. Those to my left are a bit hit or miss. But we do rubbish and card recycling one week, plastic/glass the other. I've are a pair of bins, the other is a purple box. The bin men are also really good - I was away this week and they leaned over the garden wall to take the plastic/glass box, and Ive week I forgot entirely and they came in to the front garden to take the rubbish and card.
