Live bin thread - who will get it wrong?

MeghanThyStallion · 15/02/2023 18:35

DH and I had a disagreement the other day. I said that if we put our bins out early and we put out the wrong one, everyone else would copy us and put out the wrong bin. He said that everyone would know it was wrong and put out the right bin.

Lo and behold, our lovely NDN has put out their waste bin (and ours) but it's the recycling bin collection this week 😱 I'll go out and swap them after I've cooked tea, but I'm interested to see who's right.

Anyone fancy joining me as I tally up the recycling vs waste bins and rejoice in the victory of my prediction?

Yep always check what's out first

hennythe100footbird · 15/02/2023 20:13

I discovered this week that Alexa has a bin calendar! 😍

I will be the binfluencer! 🤩

GoodChat · 15/02/2023 20:16

We're new to the area and can't get used to this alternating week thing. I don't even bother guessing until the neighbour over the road puts hers out.

I hope she doesn't read your thread and join in the fun!

BertHandsome · 15/02/2023 20:20

I’m so glad both our bins are still collected weekly for this reason 😂

MrsPnut · 15/02/2023 20:21

My husband has a system. When he brings the bin in each week, they get reorganised so the bin nearest the road is the next week’s collection.
I just drag the bin back and leave it anywhere so he has to get busy when he returns.
I do tend to put out the neighbours bins if they aren’t around because I work from home.

WestOfWestminster · 15/02/2023 20:26

How far are you going to take this Op? I suddenly feel like I'm partaking in something morally reprehensible following this thread. Those poor neighbours who are going to spend the next 2 weeks squashing down the inside of their bin to fit more and more in.

How can you live with yourself Op?

Season0fTheWitch · 15/02/2023 20:29

Our neighbour takes our bin out so I rely on him, he got it wrong once and sent us chocolates and flowers. I'd love to do the experiment though

I felt the same way, but weighed that up with the possibility of being able to tell DH that I told him so. However, I've now cracked and swapped them over. Another neighbour was putting out their waste bin, so I was able to alert them.

There's a pleasing mixture of green and black out on the pavement. However, there's been a slight tipping of the scales towards green. When DH gets home I'll give him the figures from earlier though Wink

Feeling quite smug that our council do all the bins every week.

Whyisitsososohard · 15/02/2023 20:35

Does no one else have a bin checker page on their council website? You put your postcode in.

We do similar. The one inside the gate is this week's bin.

I usually remember which one it is without looking anyway though.

tealgate · 15/02/2023 20:37

I write B or R on my calendar 😀 tomorrow is B!

Our council has a bin app. It remembers your postcode so you just have to open it to check what's going out. That still requires more effort than glancing up the road at what everyone else has done though.

I recently moved after over a decade of having the luxury of a downstairs neighbour who always put the bins out meaning I never had to remember. (In my defence, I generally brought them back in again after.) I cannot tell you how much I resent having to remember bin day and do something about it, especially as it turns out I've moved to somewhere with a fiendishly complicated system of weeks where different combinations of bins go out, culminating in the dreaded 'everything week' where I have to drag out the general waste, food waste, and three different recycling boxes. So on the one hand I admire your chaos energy but on the other, I fear it...

LimeCheesecake · 15/02/2023 18:49

Yep 2 wrong bins would have me and dh thinking we’d got it wrong, although we’d look it up. I do rely on the scout master down the street - he’s always got his shit together after bank holiday nonsense.

the scout master 🤣

PuttingDownRoots · 15/02/2023 20:59

Our council sends out a full schedule each year including when the garden bin will be collected. Its got bank holiday changes on as well

Usually I copy the neighbours but they went on holiday for two months so I got used to the timetable myself.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 15/02/2023 21:00

I use Bin Calander on Alexa, set it up once and its just a matter of asking Alexa which it is so I can get everything into the bin on a Thursday evening for pick up on Friday morning..

Yes, but it seems that most people would rather trust 'a real person' aka copy an idiot than look at the authoritative source.

Like those people who ask factual questions on here when you'd get a more reliable answer more quickly by googling and finding the answer on an official website.

Whyisitsososohard · 15/02/2023 21:04

It doesn't seem like more effort though especially as it could be wrong. But you do you. Our back lane is also redic dark! So it's hard to see which bins are out!

TooManyChoicesNotEnoughDecisions · 15/02/2023 21:06

Our council have an email reminder service, you sign up once and they email you every week with the correct colour. I also get an email to tell me if bin day is delayed and then another for the right day.

DP seems to think I have a contact at the council who lets me know personally each time. Going by the number of people who get it wrong after each bank holiday round here, I suspect it might be my own personal email service!

Yes, but the man opposite me puts on a full boiler suit every morning and trims his hedge at 6am before hanging out his washing so I assume he is more reliable than an app.

Moonflower12 · 15/02/2023 21:19

Our council is very proactive in this ( and only this) and send a text the day before ( if you register for the service) telling you which bin to put out.

I am the Binfluencer for our rural Lane.

HereLiesBetelgeuse · 15/02/2023 21:19

Our local council have a bin calender that you can sync to your phone calender. It updates with bank holidays etc My house is quite a bit from the road so can't see what other folk have out

Why? Genuine question.

He demonstrates very bizarre behaviour.

The app is programmed with information by the council, so unless that programming the bin calendar into the app is his actual job, he doesn't have any more information than you/the app does.

Given the above, why on earth would you assume that the mad neighbour over the road is a more reliable data source than the app who's only function is to tell you what day the bin needs to go out??

MsSupineLickspittle · 15/02/2023 21:33

DH does it the right before as when they say from 6.30am they mean on the dot of. He generally copies Retired Dave next door but Retired Dave goes on a lot of holidays so some weeks he's by himself. Then I get a text from the other side to say did I know DH has gone blue when over the road have gone black and green. I care not.
