Live bin thread - who will get it wrong?

DH and I had a disagreement the other day. I said that if we put our bins out early and we put out the wrong one, everyone else would copy us and put out the wrong bin. He said that everyone would know it was wrong and put out the right bin.

Lo and behold, our lovely NDN has put out their waste bin (and ours) but it's the recycling bin collection this week 😱 I'll go out and swap them after I've cooked tea, but I'm interested to see who's right.

Anyone fancy joining me as I tally up the recycling vs waste bins and rejoice in the victory of my prediction?

Given the above, why on earth would you assume that the mad neighbour over the road is a more reliable data source than the app who's only function is to tell you what day the bin needs to go out??

I don't see him as mad. Confused He's efficient and diligent. And completely reliable on what bin to put out.

Whilst my answer was supposed to be lighthearted my actual reason is probably I don't want to be the sort of person who has a bin app that they check. I'd rather engage with the world around me.

PrtScn · 15/02/2023 21:38

Our rubbish is collected every 3 weeks and the recycling every week. The garden waste collection, which you have to pay extra for, is every 2 weeks. I have the dates for rubbish collection in my calendar.

HyacinthineMacaw · 15/02/2023 21:38

We are the binfluencers in our close, and once caused inadvertent havoc by having to leave our broken bin out randomly to be collected and replaced 😁 It was like watching It’s a Knockout (one for the kids, there)

hryllilegur · 15/02/2023 21:39

I get round this by keeping my bins in the back lane at all times. I never need to remember to put my bin out of remember which bin it was. This has improved my life a great deal. 🤣

DungareeDana · 15/02/2023 21:39

I think there is. Bluey episode on this exact problem.

I felt the same way, but weighed that up with the possibility of being able to tell DH that I told him so. However, I've now cracked and swapped them over. Another neighbour was putting out their waste bin, so I was able to alert them.

There's a pleasing mixture of green and black out on the pavement. However, there's been a slight tipping of the scales towards green. When DH gets home I'll give him the figures from earlier though Wink

I'll be able to sleep now 🤭

Interesting research Op

Do you goes not use some online calendar e.g. Google calendar? You can set recurrence so we have all the bins set on their 1/2/3/4 week schedule. I think I have more bin appointments than anything else

MadamLeota · 15/02/2023 22:49

I also ask Alexa to open bin reminder because I can never remember which one it is.

our council collects a day late after a bank holiday. I never remember this and always put the bin out on the usual day. As does my NDN. If we were relying on each other we’d be stuffed because we’re both as bad.

RandomUsernameHere · 15/02/2023 22:59

That wouldn't fool me, I have a screenshot of the schedule on my phone! Also I can tell which week it is by how full the bins are.

SinnerBoy · 16/02/2023 00:26

@ComeTheSpringLobelia

God! How are you supposed to get the damned bin in by ten, if you have a job? Ours say it has to be out after 6am, but no back in time.

Everyone puts them out the night before.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 16/02/2023 00:35

I'm so glad i don't have to put my nsns "out." They live in the front garden and the bin men take them from there and then return them.

Mind you I did ask the DCs to make sure the indoor bins were all emptied on Monday night ready for collection on Tuesday. Of course they didn't bother so I now have an almost full recycling bin due to go next week. And a full rubbish bin with another 2 weeks to go because the stuff that should have gone this week was still in the bloody indoor bins. Hmm

rubydoobydoo · 16/02/2023 00:40

I had to check our calendar this week as I left for work earlier than normal and no-one else had put theirs out and I was the first 😅

Oo does that make me a binfluencer? Not sure if I want that responsibility!

I've got a fortnightly 'bins G&R' (grey and red) and 'bins B&Y' (brown and yellow) alternating on my calendar - short so I can read it on my Apple Watch.

dramakween · 16/02/2023 00:48

@rubydoobydoo It sounds like you may meet the definition...😂

Binfluencer : The neighbour on your street who exerts influence, inspires or guides others as to which bin/s to put out on rubbish day.

Schnooze · 16/02/2023 00:54

Dh does all that. My life is devoid of binstress.

dizzydizzydizzy · 16/02/2023 01:02

I put out the wrong bin a few months ago. NDN then put the right bins out and didn't tell me. GRRR!

MrsPnut · 15/02/2023 20:21

My husband has a system. When he brings the bin in each week, they get reorganised so the bin nearest the road is the next week’s collection.
I just drag the bin back and leave it anywhere so he has to get busy when he returns.
I do tend to put out the neighbours bins if they aren’t around because I work from home.

But but but.. how can you possibly get it right when you stumble outside when it's dark and want to quickly throw a bag in the bin? Ours are arranged in an order that we will never deviate from 😂

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/02/2023 01:14

Whyisitsososohard · 15/02/2023 20:35

Does no one else have a bin checker page on their council website? You put your postcode in.

But this way only one person has to check the calendar.

Although whoever our binfluencer is caused nearly the entire street to put out the waste bins a week early last week. Nearly had a heart attack when I left for work to find a whole street of bins out.

Recycling is easy they go out every week. Except garden which goes out every other week so you just have to remember whether you put it out last week.

It's interesting that some people won't even know who is their street binfluencer

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 16/02/2023 07:19

I moved to a bungalow a year ago. This street is all older people. They all know what colour to put it.
they all seem to put them out about 2pm the day before as well. Never have my bins been so easy.

itsgettingweird · 16/02/2023 08:04

We have a bin store for 4 flats that's emptied.

I only know which bin is going because of what the others on the street put out!

So I'd assume you were right without the experiment Grin

hennythe100footbird · 15/02/2023 20:13

I discovered this week that Alexa has a bin calendar! 😍

I will be the binfluencer! 🤩

I'm always checking my calendar and thinking I just have exciting weekend plans coming up but it's usually bin day. Grin

ReviewingTheSituation · 16/02/2023 09:18

You people with alternating bins have it lucky... we have a schedule which means food bins go out every week, recycling (and garden waste if you subscribe) go fortnightly, and waste goes 3 weekly. So sometimes it's just a food caddy, sometimes it's food and recycling, sometimes it's food and waste, and sometimes it's everything!

We have a handy app from the council which sends a notification at 4pm the day before, telling you what to put out.

hennythe100footbird · 19/02/2023 20:53

@suzyscat I'm just glad to have something to do in a calendar! 🤣🤣

hennythe100footbird · 21/02/2023 22:29

Bin day is coming around again guys! Who's up for some Binfluencing? 🤣🤣
