Worms in my rice? (Pic)

I got a spoonful out of the pan to check if my bran rice was cooked and there are 3 longish white things in there that look like worms.

Rationally I guess it's unlikely but it's really put me off! What do you think?

Looks like worms to me..I wouldn’t use it

TheFormidableMrsC · 05/02/2023 18:26

It looks like rice to me

Talipesmum · 05/02/2023 18:27

Just looks like rice - white rice sometimes goes very long like that - if the husks have come off the brown rice it might expand more?

KickAssMumma · 05/02/2023 18:27

Oh hell no 🙊 I wouldn’t eat it either. No no no noooooooo

I didnt know rice had worms potentially though

Perfectlystill · 05/02/2023 18:28

Cut one in half and see what the insides look like?

chopette5 · 05/02/2023 18:28

That's just rice. Some types go long like that when cooked.

HyacinthineMacaw · 05/02/2023 18:29

I enlarged the photo and they definitely look like the have ribbed bodies, and heads. Might they be weevils of some sort? Do you have any of the rest of the packet left uncooked, where you could look to see if you can spot any more?

🤣 oh god. I couldn’t eat it now. I’ve always hated rice.

Does rice have segments like bugs do? Cos it has segments

pigsinoodies · 05/02/2023 18:30

Free protein. Yum.

ChilliBandit · 05/02/2023 18:31

Did you not see them when you tipped it into the pan? They would stand out amongst the dry rice grains.

ZuckerwatterMaus · 05/02/2023 18:32

The look like worms to me , segmented and tapered at the end . Nope , I wouldn’t be eating that !

Perfectlystill · 05/02/2023 18:32

This thread is the highlight of my Sunday night.

OP please tell us more!

Casilero · 05/02/2023 18:35

They're a different texture to the other rice @HyacinthineMacaw is right, definitely can see segments. Why would worms be in rice though? Is this a thing? Please do disect them and post another photo. Don't suppose you have a microscope? Am now fully vested in this thread

ChilliBandit · 05/02/2023 18:36

@Casilero - I googled and apparently fly larvae in rice is not uncommon 🤢 but I don’t think they just turn into maggots in the pan. I am confused why the OP didn’t see them going in, if they are maggots.

PocketRocket45 · 05/02/2023 18:36

I still have most of the packet and there is nothing weird in it, except a few white white grains so maybe it's them? When I cut through them it very much feels like rice texture-wise.

BUT! They look very much segmented, slightly curved and tapered at the end so I'm not going near them!

Even DH who would eat anything and usually thinks I'm neurotic is a bit perplexed and is boiling rice from another packet for the DC. He will probably still eat it though, so I'll report back!

That's not rice 🤢

SalaDaeng · 05/02/2023 18:39

Those are maggots. Do you wash your rice thoroughly before cooking? I was taught to wash it 6 times.

Somanysocks · 05/02/2023 18:40

On the upside though, they're dead and proper clean.

BetiYeti · 05/02/2023 18:40

This is horrible 🤢

chopette5 · 05/02/2023 18:40

I find wild rice and basmati go like that. A segmented look. I attach a photo I found online - looks pointed one end like yours OP. It's rice!

It doesn’t
that’s cooked rice

But these things are larger than the rice grains so even washing them wouldn't remove them. Although perhaps you'd notice them wriggling about 🤢

chopette5 · 05/02/2023 18:42

Look!! Bottom of the pic, looks just like OP's. It's basmati.

Hmm yes that does look kind of the same actually, just mine are quite long. I'm going to empty the packet onto a baking tray and inspect, if there's nothing wrong in the half I have then it's probably not worms right?
