Worms in my rice? (Pic)

I got a spoonful out of the pan to check if my bran rice was cooked and there are 3 longish white things in there that look like worms.

Rationally I guess it's unlikely but it's really put me off! What do you think?

I had to chuck put a bag of rice DECADES ago as it was full of those creepy maggoty buggers. Bleurgh. Never seen any since. It was quite an old bag, I think.
Washing won't get rid of them, though will it, because they will stay in the seive with the rice grains. They'll just be cleaner.
Sorry, I know that wasn't helpful. 😳

Another vote for a few rogue (and overlooked) basmati grains!

Yup, those are what I was thinking of.

Those of you who posted photos of wormy-looking rice have failed to note that in those pictures, the rice is all the same colour. OP has brown rice, and then some long white things (looking just like a boiled and therefore bleached weevil larva). Different colour from the rice itself.

Why are you boiling your food in bleach??

normal water does not bleach the colour from food. Literally nothing bleaches white when boiled in water for 20 minutes

this thread is batshit. They’re clearly rogue basmati grains

larvae would float and retain their colour

Pleiades2020 · 05/02/2023 19:34

I'd say they were rice grains. If there are things in the rice you should be able to see if you pour some out onto a plate and inspect. I had weevils once in flour, but you can prevent them by freezing the bag for a week. Because of that I keep everything in sealed storage containers. The little darlings can bite through plastic bags apparently.

White rice is just brown rice with the bran husk and germ removed - when it’s removed the grain is white and cooks much quicker. So if there are a few white grains (where the husk has come away) mixed in with the brown grains, which isn’t that unheard of, then they’d be over cooked by the time the brown rice is ready, as brown takes longer. So the white grains would likely be split and overcooked- it does get that broken segmented look when it’s over cooked.

Just showed this to nephew who owns a restaurant and is a chef in Bangkok. He says maggots.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 06/02/2023 10:38

It’s so obviously just a few rogue basmati grains. Really, truly, it is. Calm the hell down, panickers

This thread has made me want to go and check the jar of rice I have in the back of the cupboard, that I never use as I'm not a great fan of rice. It's making me itch that there might be weevils in my cupboards now. 🤢🫣😬

KnickerlessParsons · 24/03/2024 21:14

For the confused people like me, which grains of rice do we think might be worms? 🤔

coldcallerbaiter · 24/03/2024 21:18

Maybe it has a few grains of a different rice in it. From when it got packed.

I do ours on a delicate wash (30 degrees) with the no-spin setting.

And then peg out each grain individually on the line.

I thought everyone did this. No?

Errrr.. leaving it outside so other bugs can potentially land on the grains a lay their eggs. Absolutely not!

What’s common where I’m from is to pop each grain under a microscope for a thorough inspection, before placing into a sterilisation chamber for 24 hours….. and then we wash it 25 times! All this prep info is on the back of the rice packet and it’s bloody common sense!

Raise your bar!!

😂😂 That poor poster I just replied to must be so confused. Note to self: check the date of threads before commenting.

I’m out!

Kat2328 · 24/03/2024 22:22

It's maybe just a slightly different grain variety

Confused? No. Rice does keep a long time, especially if you wrap each grain individually in cling film, label it with a date, as I do before popping it in the freezer.

Ladyluckinred · 25/03/2024 09:55

😂😂 welcome back @TwoLeftSocksWithHoles
