Worms in my rice? (Pic)

I got a spoonful out of the pan to check if my bran rice was cooked and there are 3 longish white things in there that look like worms.

Rationally I guess it's unlikely but it's really put me off! What do you think?

@FurAndFeathers

thank Christ.. was too scared to google and my big fat baby in my belly wants constant food - particularly rice which I don’t normally eat much of haha..

Look!! Bottom of the pic, looks just like OP's. It's basmati.

OK yeah that's just the same. Dh is going to eat it!

It’s literally just basmati rice 😂

@PocketRocket45 you could easily reassure yourself by gently squashing/cutting a grain

BMW6 · 05/02/2023 18:45

They are maggots surely?

uhOhOP · 05/02/2023 18:45

OP, is it not just cooked white rice, the few grains you said you saw amongst your brown rice? It looks like basmati if I've used a bit too much water and gone on to overcook it.

Also, are maggots even white?

chopette5 · 05/02/2023 18:45

So happy to have saved a bowl of rice 🍚 enjoy, OP!

SallyWD · 05/02/2023 18:48

It's rice! Some rice goes like that.

Casilero · 05/02/2023 18:51

ChilliBandit · 05/02/2023 18:36

@Casilero - I googled and apparently fly larvae in rice is not uncommon 🤢 but I don’t think they just turn into maggots in the pan. I am confused why the OP didn’t see them going in, if they are maggots.

I googled too and rice weevils are also relatively common. I actually feel quite nauseous now because I've noticed larger grains of rice quite a few times and did actually think they looked a bit like tapeworms but unlike the OP I didn't have the good sense to photo it and zoom in on the photo.

Yarnosaura · 05/02/2023 18:55

Looks like cooked basmati to me, probably just a few basmati grains in your bag of rice.

Thatshipsailed · 05/02/2023 18:55

These are rice weevils. People in here are wild

I was also going to say it looked like Basmati rice. Sometimes you get longer grains. Why don't you cut one of them and see what the cross section looks like. Doesn't look like a worm to me, no black bit on the end.

KickAssMumma · 05/02/2023 18:57

@Thatshipsailed

FUCK NO! What is that shit? Oh hell. 😱

They're adults though. This is what I saw when I googled

Squash one and you should be able to tell fairly easily whether it's rice or a worm.

Mysmallgarden · 05/02/2023 19:00

I wouldn't be eating that, they definitely look like worms to me. Bin it and cook some spaghetti instead.

Yup, those are what I was thinking of.

Those of you who posted photos of wormy-looking rice have failed to note that in those pictures, the rice is all the same colour. OP has brown rice, and then some long white things (looking just like a boiled and therefore bleached weevil larva). Different colour from the rice itself.

SalaDaeng · 05/02/2023 18:39

Those are maggots. Do you wash your rice thoroughly before cooking? I was taught to wash it 6 times.

I do ours on a delicate wash (30 degrees) with the no-spin setting.

And then peg out each grain individually on the line.

I thought everyone did this. No?

Frenchfancy · 05/02/2023 19:04

Weevils. We get them in flour, but also in oats, rice, lentil and they are particularly keen on chocolate.

Bane of my life. Everything is carefully stored and checked before cooking.

hedgehoglurker · 05/02/2023 19:04

I'm another that says it is some rogue Basmati grains.

😂😂😂😂

I will be doing from now on! Or sticking to oven chips.

Chocolate? Is nothing sacred? I don't store anything properly. Just scrunch the open packet down a bit. I'm probably infested with weevils. It's no wonder I'm always hungry, I'm probably riddled with worms.

This! Are you lot on the wind up? It's just a different type of rice.

justmindinmybiz · 05/02/2023 19:11

It's basmati or jasmine rice!

ThisWOMANWontWheesht · 05/02/2023 19:12

It's rice that's 'blown' FGS, not maggots!

BadGranny · 05/02/2023 19:12

If they are weevil larvae, they would have floated to the top when you put the rice in water. When I lived abroad, we used to just skim the weevils and larvae off the top of the water when cooking rice or spaghetti. You can get them in pasta, rice, breakfast cereals and flour, and they are quite harmless.
