Do you do 10,000 steps a day?

As the thread says. I’ve been trying to do this and I have massively upped my activity levels this year but I’m finding it so hard to find the time to do this many walks.

I am a single parent who works full time in a sedentary job but even by making all the changes I can, such as going for a walk during their extracurricular activities instead of watching them, I’m not often hitting 10,000 steps.

do you manage it? If so, how?!

Yes
My DCs school is 2 miles away so I walk there to drop them off, then back home and then the same to pick them up.

Noeyeclare · 04/02/2023 17:54

No, I also have a sedentary job and only manage 5-6000 per day

Lcb123 · 04/02/2023 17:54

Most days I do. Walk at lunchtime. Avoid driving where possible

TheDuchessOfMN · 04/02/2023 17:55

I do 13,000 most days because my job (the building) involves a lot of walking.

I’m at home today and purposely went for a long walk when I saw that I was only on 3,000 at lunch time.

Shadowboy · 04/02/2023 17:56

Some days I hit 19,000- 20,000 and some days I manage only 5000. I average 8,000 term time and 11,000 during the holidays

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/02/2023 17:56

Nowhere near. I wfh and detest "going out for a walk". I've lived in my house since 2004, "going out for a walk" holds 0 novelty for me.

NancyJoan · 04/02/2023 17:57

Walk to and from work, walk to talk to people in work instead of emailing, walk in the park
for half an hour at lunchtime. I work on a big school site, I walk around it a lot during my working day.

Tangerinie · 04/02/2023 17:57

Not today as I'm holed up indoors with a horrible cold, but I very often do.

I walk everywhere and it just adds up. School runs, grocery runs, walking round the shops, walking about as I'm doing housework etc. I never go for a walk, it just adds up doing normal commutes to school and (when I was working) work

KangarooKenny · 04/02/2023 17:58

If I walk for about 45 minutes I do 10,000 steps just in that

Fantina · 04/02/2023 17:58

@LindorDoubleChoc Same. But I’ve often driven a short distance and then walked somewhere new which has definitely helped. It’s also reminded me of lockdown when I explored every street where I live during our walks!

@KangarooKenny Really? For most people, 10,000 steps = five miles.

Yes. I get 5000 early in the morning - I get up early to exercise but that doesn't use up that many steps, as such. But I am flying around the house getting ready, kids up, housework from 7 - 815 or so & that gives me a lot.

If I'm wfh, I don't get much more until I take a break & then go for a walk / do more housework.

In work, which is only normally active (university, so walking between lecture halls, meetings etc) I would easily hit 10,000 by lunchtime.

I can't understand how people don't get 10,000. You can be more active without going for walks necessarily, tho this is good to do too.

Fantina · 04/02/2023 18:00

It looks like I need to somehow build the walking into my day rather than specifically going out to get the steps in…

No way you could do that.

I run 45 minutes and wouldn't hit 10,000

Yep, I do t measure how far it is, but I know it’s 10,000 steps as I have a pedometer.

Fantina · 04/02/2023 18:01

Oh, I should mention I’m not measuring my daily activities, I only use Strava to measure my actual walks

StarDolphins · 04/02/2023 18:01

I don’t monitor this but the amount of running about I do, I would imagine I easily do it! Literally never sat down!

CheeseDreamsTonight · 04/02/2023 18:01

This number is not based on anything scientific. The general consensus is anything form 6000 is in the right area

There's something wrong with your pedometer

Nowhere near. I wfh and detest "going out for a walk". I've lived in my house since 2004, "going out for a walk" holds 0 novelty for me.

So find other ways to build in activity - I too disliked walks (runs, I loved!) pre-lockdown. I grew to love them during Covid. However, now I'm back to normal life & busy-ness, I don't get as many proper walks as I like.

But I exercise, run, and am very active around the house.

Lots of ways to get steps.

So I’m a liar now ?

glovepillow22 · 04/02/2023 18:03

Yes but I have 2 dogs, one of which needs the excercise otherwise she's a pain in the arse.
If I didn't have them not sure how strict I would be with my steps.
I generally walk 2.5 miles in the morning and another 2 or so in the evening x

Fantina · 04/02/2023 18:03

@CheeseDreamsTonight I read that too and that actually we need more than five fruit and veg portions a day but five was picked as an achievable amount. I think 10,000 steps is a good target but it is just so hard to carve the time out.

I said there is something wrong with your pedometer.
Who mentioned lying?

ReindeerSkull · 04/02/2023 18:03

Usually yes. Walking to the bus stop, from bus stop at the other end to work, around work all day and then reverse the journey home often gives me around 11000, and I like to do at a big walk at least one day at the weekend.

I'm fat but pretty fit!
