Do you do 10,000 steps a day?

As the thread says. I’ve been trying to do this and I have massively upped my activity levels this year but I’m finding it so hard to find the time to do this many walks.

I am a single parent who works full time in a sedentary job but even by making all the changes I can, such as going for a walk during their extracurricular activities instead of watching them, I’m not often hitting 10,000 steps.

do you manage it? If so, how?!

@KangarooKenny

Not a liar, but it's not possible for you to walk 10,000 steps in a 45 min walk unless you are doing teeny tiny ones.

You've made a mistake.

I said there is something wrong with your pedometer.
Who mentioned lying?

There’s nothing wrong with the pedometer on my iPhone, nor the pedometer I used before it.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 04/02/2023 18:04

@Fantina yes that too! I mean there's nothing wrong with a goal but don't think it's a magic number it beat yourself up if you're short of it.

It should really also be more veg than fruit in those portions

teenagetantrums · 04/02/2023 18:05

At work l can easily...on my feet all day.
Today I'm off and haven't left the house. I have only done 1000 steps..mainly from sofa to the bathroom and the fridge.

KangarooKenny · 04/02/2023 17:58

If I walk for about 45 minutes I do 10,000 steps just in that

You must walk VERY fast or have tiny steps. I walk fast for about 42 mins, which is 3.4 miles and that's about 5500 steps.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/02/2023 18:05

The iPhone is definitely not fully reliable.

Have you a Fitbit or similar?

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 04/02/2023 18:05

Yes, I always get to 10,000, often by lunchtime. However I own my own business and schedule appointments so that I have a lot of free time. Keeping fit and active is a priority for me. Partly for the obvious health benefits, especially in older women, but also because I enjoy things such as mountain climbing and paddle boarding. I have a very "use it or lose it" attitude towards my body.

OP just try to build in lots of extra steps wherever yo can. They will all add up.

FizzyStream · 04/02/2023 18:06

I get the most steps in on the days I have an hour long horse riding lesson but I'm aware that is technically cheating Grin

Ted27 · 04/02/2023 18:06

@KangarooKenny

Are you running for 45 minutes?
I walk to my allotment nearly every day, its just about mile and I average 6000 - 6500 steps for the return journey - about an hour in total.

Most days I do at least 10, 000. It's a struggle Mon to Thursday as I work mostly from home so it can be hard to get the motivation to go sometimes. It's a lot easier in the spring, summer as I'll walk up to my allotment after work whilst it's still light.
Fridays and weekends no issue- I don't drive so just walking to get stuff dove is usually more like 15000

GrazingSheep · 04/02/2023 18:06

So far today I’ve clocked up 18,683 steps - 14.37 kilometres.
Off again now with the dog.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/02/2023 18:06

I walk fast for about 42 mins, which is 3.4 miles and that's about 5500 steps.

That's about how much I do too.

My DD - taller, longer legs - will do fewer steps on the same walk.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/02/2023 18:07

Are you running for 45 minutes?

Even if she is - and running slowly, so she does more steps - it would be tight enough to get 10,000 in that time.

I run 45 minutes often & I'd get maybe 7k+

Fantina · 04/02/2023 18:08

@CheeseDreamsTonight yes but I didn’t the fruit is easier to help us hit the five a day arbitrary target too. I’ve started ‘eating a rainbow’ as a way of getting more varied fruit and veg into us all instead of the old favourites. I like the idea of having something to aim for but I don’t know what else I can realistically do.

I often work through most of my lunch break too so I can leave on time for the DC so a walk can’t regularly be added into my schedule then.

I've counted myself walking briskly for me (prob quite slow!) and timing myself on a stop watch. I do about 105 steps in a minute.

So, pure brisk walking, it would take me 95 minutes, or and hour and 35 minutes to do 10,000 steps.

itsgettingweird · 04/02/2023 18:09

4/7 days of the week.

My ds is a swimmer and trains morning and evenings and I walk 5k+ each time with other parents.

Those days I do 18-26k steps.

Wednesdays I manage about 8k.

The less said about the weekends the better Grin

Have you tried jogging on the spot in the kitchen whilst cooking dinner? Or when watching tv. I use to do this and it's good for short bursts of racing your heart rate as well as getting steps in.

But importantly you are thinking about it and increasing your steps and likely as you get faster at walking you'll do more in the time you have.

LolaSmiles · 04/02/2023 18:10

I tend to achieve 8000-12000 unless I'm having a lazy day in the house.

Baconand · 04/02/2023 18:10

No. I did when I worked full time in a campus university but now we WFH a lot and on campus we use Teams so far less time on the move.

Fantina · 04/02/2023 18:10

I could definitely seek out opportunities to walk instead of using the car. I hear a lot of car journeys are very short ones so I’ll watch out for that.

Rarely, today I’ve been to a yoga class, walked briskly (6kph) on a treadmill for 40 mins. Been for lunch, been to the supermarket, just home and my watch tells me I’ve done 8460 steps.

megletthesecond · 04/02/2023 18:10

Always. My daily target is 14k.
I managed to get 10k last week while off with covid and a little walk around the block. I have a sedentary job and negotiated a 9:30 start so I can walk there. When I WFH I walk before and after work.

Buttalapasta · 04/02/2023 18:12

I can't understand how people don't get 10,000. You can be more active without going for walks necessarily, tho this is good to do too.
I don't drive anywhere and walk everyday. I guess I just live too close to everything!

Xrays · 04/02/2023 18:12

Rather than worrying about x amount of steps you’d be far better to download the Active 10 app and aim for 30 mins of brisk walking everyday. (The app records how many “active 10s” - 10 mins of brisk walking - you do in a day). Far better for your heart and general fitness. I do about 40 mins brisk walking every day.

Depends how fast you walk

teraculum29 · 04/02/2023 18:14

I struggle on Saturdays (as of this time my watch says 6170steps at the mo)
I set my watch to 9000 a day.
On my work days I tend to do do about 15k.

Everydayitsgettingcloser · 04/02/2023 18:15

I do on an office day - 5 mins walk to school drop off, 15 mins walk to the station, then up and down some stairs at the station, 10 mins walk to the office at the other end, bit of walking around the office, reverse commute. I find it a bit weird that somehow that is 10, 000 steps but going for a long walk, even 40-50 mins or so, doesn't get me there if I don't do anything else
