Do you do 10,000 steps a day?

As the thread says. I’ve been trying to do this and I have massively upped my activity levels this year but I’m finding it so hard to find the time to do this many walks.

I am a single parent who works full time in a sedentary job but even by making all the changes I can, such as going for a walk during their extracurricular activities instead of watching them, I’m not often hitting 10,000 steps.

do you manage it? If so, how?!

Yes. I WFH most days but always try to get out for a couple of walks (usually at lunchtime and in the evening). I don't drive, so shopping/errands add up too.

Fantina · 04/02/2023 18:34

I should also mention that I’ve seen a noticeable improvement in my mood since I’ve been walking this much too. Getting outside, even in the dark, has done me good!

I could easily only do 2000 on a wfh day. Often 8-6 back to back teams meetings only breaking for a drink, wee or sandwich.

I go to the gym after work for classes and to socialise/use the gym but the idea that 2000 isn’t possible is daft.

It’s all about choice isn’t it. I don’t want to extend my working day by taking a longer break to go for a walk on my own. I’d rather crack on, finish my day at 6 and go to the gym with my pals.

I get it. I had days like this during Covid too

But regularly doing so little activity, as opposed to exercise, is unhealthy. The regular incidental exercise is as important in its own way as the targeted intense exercise.

I have a mini trampoline that I jog on whilst watching TV in the evenings if I haven't done my steps during the day. 30min at a reasonable pace usually does it.

That's a great idea.

I am permanently shattered and I crash if I do too much, so no I don't do 10k a day. I track weekly active minutes instead.

Rebel2023 · 04/02/2023 18:30

@EarringsandLipstick no, I exercise at home
I can't take walk breaks because every min of my day is monitored and apart from my 25 min lunch I'm expected to be at my desk (bar making a cup of tea/toilet of course!)
By the time I've finished work, done a spin class and weights, had tea, showered I'm wiped. Have health conditions and that's as much as I can manage in a day

Oh sorry Rebel. That sounds very tough. You're doing really well to manage the exercise on top of that, fair play

BlackCatTabbyCat · 04/02/2023 18:37

I do around 9/10000 a day in work so usually about 14000 a day sometimes more sometimes less. Weekends are a totally different story. Be lucky if I've even done 1000 today.

TokyoSushi · 04/02/2023 18:37

Mostly, but not because I make a conscious effort to do it. It's mainly because I usually walk the school run twice per day, do a couple of exercise classes and run a bit. I couldn't bear to have to walk simply to get my steps up.

Fantina · 04/02/2023 18:38

It’s also made me realise how woefully inactive we are as a society - life isn’t set up to make it easy to get even a basic marker of activity in. I could do walking meetings at work, I am the head of department so I might trial that.

I do between 12,000-18,000 a day but dc school is a long walk there and back

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 04/02/2023 18:38

I usually manage between 10-15k steps per day. When I get up in the morning I step on the spot for about 25 minutes and that's about 3k. In work I walk to the toilets furthest from my office and I walk at lunchtime. I try to walk instead of driving when practical but I also walk instead of standing still so when the kettle is boiling I do steps.

StealingYourWiFi · 04/02/2023 18:40

Yes mostly but I have to try. Days off work are easy - I often get around 12-17k.

i work in the operating theatre often scrubbed in for hours so a day at work is usually around 5-8k. I have a treadmill at home so I make up the rest once im home if I have any time or energy

KarenColman · 04/02/2023 18:41

I’ve just done 3000 steps on my treadmill at 5k per hour which took 25mins. If I wore an Apple Watch I might get to 10k more easily as it would take into account steps around the house too.

I’d have to walk for about an hour and a half to do 10000. I average about 5k unless I make a concerted effort. Today I have done 7k.

I don't think this is true. I have plenty of opportunities to be active. It just depends on individual circumstances.

If you are interested in walking meetings, please discuss with your team first.

I think they can work for informal chats. I've tried them.
For meetings with actions to be noted, complicated projects and so on, I hate them. I need to use my laptop & take notes. And some members of my team would really hate the concept due to health / weight issues.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 04/02/2023 18:43

I have done this week because I've been out for a walk with the dog before work. 30/40 mins-5000 steps
Then walking around work. I've done my steps by 10am some days.

Normally I am either just under or just over there's not much in it, but I am making more of an effort to walk new places. So if I do a big big walk on my days off I'll be in step credit so to speak 😂

mycatsanutter · 04/02/2023 18:44

Yes I do without fail but think I would struggle if I was a single mum as I often go out in the evening for a dog walk . I do about 12-15k in the week and about 20k at the weekend

Hm, I think activity levels are a choice, for the most part.

Most people could fit in more time to exercise, but let's be fair, when it's dark and raining, most of us would rather sit in front of the TV and do nothing Grin

Mediumred · 04/02/2023 18:45

At the moment I am averaging about 18k but I have a border collie 😝 Plus I run a couple of miles on top of walking the dog about 4 times a week.

I’m a shift worker and that’s the only reason I can fit it in, it’s incredibly time consuming! Love the dog but she’s a total time sponge!

doadeer · 04/02/2023 18:46

I don't drive so walk everywhere and many days I'm around 9000-12000, I was out walking the other day for hours with my son and still only did 16,000. I can see how hitting 10,000 is really hard for people. I think five miles is a lot. I find eating 8-10 portions of fruit and veg easy though.

BiasedBinding · 04/02/2023 18:47

I don’t have a pedometer but I know I don’t do 10k steps, I have to get activity in other ways than walking because the only way I would manage that many steps would be to only sleep for 4 hours a night and I think sleep is more important under those circumstances. I know people won’t believe me but I can’t be arsed to detail my life and work patterns, you’ll just have to trust me that I wouldn’t be able to fit that many steps into a day and I don’t try to

Remagirl · 04/02/2023 18:47

Yes, I work from home mostly. I take the dog out for a walk every lunch time and almost always hit 10,000. I had a knee replacement last December so exercise is really important and I make myself do it even when the weather is rubbish.

sanityisamyth · 04/02/2023 18:47

I did today as I fancied a walk. Usually do about 8,000.

'Nowhere near. I wfh and detest "going out for a walk". I've lived in my house since 2004, "going out for a walk" holds 0 novelty for me.'

Well as long as you get plenty of other physical activity and aren't overweight that's fine but many people want to keep their weight down and a brisk 10k steps a day is cheap and easily done. Going to the gym holds 0 novelty for me.

It is a bit dull walking alone for miles on pavements yes but with friends or with your favourite playlist blasting on the beach or the woods it really is a good way of keeping a bit of fitness.

Yeah, I'd love to walk in woods or on the beach in zone 2 London. And I am overweight and unfit. What's that got to do with the price of fish or the OP's question. You wouldn't be lecturing me would you Janiie?

@KangarooKenny

Not a liar, but it's not possible for you to walk 10,000 steps in a 45 min walk unless you are doing teeny tiny ones.

You've made a mistake.

I thought that sounded wrong straight away. A mistake I think.

floatswind · 04/02/2023 18:53

Over the course of a day, if working from home and not needing to venture out, it's possible to do 5000 steps. Sometimes less. I can also do a lot more, and so my average some weeks can be 12,000 daily.

Zone minutes, and daily exercise, mean more to me though, and those are what I track daily and weekly.

Fantina · 04/02/2023 18:01

Oh, I should mention I’m not measuring my daily activities, I only use Strava to measure my actual walks

In this case you'll have no clue how many steps you're actually doing! If you're getting close to 10k on your Strava walks then you'll definitely be getting over 10k from your other daily activity
