A very thick and heavy wool blanket

Where would you get one? Not a thin fancy merino wool throw but a proper big and thick and very warm traditional lambs wool blanket. The one that keeps you warm and not just good for pictures.
We used to have one at home when I was little. I think it might have been Irish.
I have done my googling but haven't found what I have in mind

Funny you say Irish, I’m in Ireland and have been looking forever and only found two in very traditional touristy shops that cost over two hundred quid!! (Will look up all suggested above so thanks for the thread op!)

MsNightingale · 01/02/2023 22:47

Definitely a Welsh carthen blanket from Melin Tregwynt.

National Trust used to do lovely wool blankets. Have you tried their online shop?

I'm very impressed with my recycled wool one

Price is amazing, not what you'd expect from NT. However is not a large double bed sized blanket

Have a look here:

I’m sure if you phoned them they’d get you the heaviest one they have

Clovacloud · 01/02/2023 23:04

Look for Dormy Blankets on EBay, I bought one and it’s a traditional really warm blanket.

Ilovechintz · 01/02/2023 23:05

Keep an eye out in charity shops. Ive got a lovely Witney blanket.

WinterFoxes · 01/02/2023 23:09

DS got a tartan wool blanket to take to uni from one of the scottish wool companies. he brought it home at Christmas and I was amazed how warm it was. Our living room was like a fridge but uner that blanket I felt so warm. I have a NT loose wool weave recycled wool blanket (only £20) and it is also very warm.

Ohifyouinsist · 01/02/2023 23:09

We've got one from La Redoute, it's like the ones I had as a child - thick, heavy and bound with ribbon

Check out Tartan Blanket Co, I’ve been following them for ages on Instagram but haven’t actually bought one yet. They have some lovely ones and they make them from sustainable wool. They sometimes have some great sale bargains too.

Vintage waffle wool blankets are fantastic. There are some on eBay. I was lucky enough to find one in a charity shop for a tenner - King size! It has brilliant weight and flexibility without being suffocating. I sleep so much better with it on top of the duvet!

Daffodilsandtuplips · 01/02/2023 23:31

We had Witney wool blankets when I was a child, the type with a thick satin border at the top and bottom.
Not sure if they are still available though.
Welsh wool blankets are fab. Expensive but worth it.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 01/02/2023 23:37

Just googled Witney woollen blankets, they are still in business.
Ebay has them, cellular and the type I remembered, good prices too.

You want a Welsh woven blanket. Two layers of wool. Curlew weavers is where mine came from about 40 years ago.
So warm and so heavy

I was going to suggest Curlew Weavers too, you have to phone Roger to order, but fabulous warm woollen items made in his mill. Melin tregwnt is good too but more chichi

This is a great thread! I love blankets. My dream is a massive kingsize welsh blanket but in the meantime I have a couple of Pendleton blankets which are very thick and great. I also have a variety of smaller welsh wool throws and some vintage thinner blankets. Plus some national trust ones.

Melin Tregwynt for beautiful Welsh wool blankets. It's a little white mill in Pembrokeshire. They have a website.

I bought such a beautiful blanket from there, I'm a bit obsessed with it and no one is allowed to touch it. I haven't admitted to my mum how much it was - she just wouldn't get it at all. I'm going to bequeath it to one of my DC's, it will see me out!

Veryactivenymphomaniac · 02/02/2023 08:17

I'm relieved I'm not alone in my love for blankets. Sometimes I think they're a bit niche! My parents got rid of a load when they moved house and I was so excited to go through them but they were either covered in gloss paint or full of holes. The disappointment 😢

Charity shops. I've bought a couple of heavy wool blankets - my favourite is bright teal and, except for the label (which suggests it's from the Sixties) looks new.

Timide · 04/02/2023 11:56

Oh dear I'm still looking through all the suggestions here ☺️ so many beautiful blankets. Cannot decide!
Has anyone been inspired?

I’ve got a great one I inherited from my great auntie. It’s on my bed every night! I’ve never seen any new ones as thick and heavy. EBay has lots similar if you search for vintage wool blanket.

HilarysMantelpiece · 04/02/2023 13:56

I posted in a rush upthread Timide so I dont know if you saw this one: shaws.ie/products/kerry-woollen-mills-100-pure-wool-blankets

I got one in the end of summer sale last August and it is pure bliss on my bed this winter.

I am not a fan of heating my bedroom but like to be toasty in bed; this lies between my duvet cover and my sheet. I have not been cold any night this winter and wake up with that lovely wool sense of warmth [i.e. not sticky].

WandaWomblesaurus · 04/02/2023 14:12

How do you wash the heavy wool ones?

GettingStuffed · 04/02/2023 14:27

Atlantic blankets, made in Cornwall. We had them on our bed at our hotel in St Ives
