A very thick and heavy wool blanket

Where would you get one? Not a thin fancy merino wool throw but a proper big and thick and very warm traditional lambs wool blanket. The one that keeps you warm and not just good for pictures.
We used to have one at home when I was little. I think it might have been Irish.
I have done my googling but haven't found what I have in mind

National Trust used to do lovely wool blankets. Have you tried their online shop?

User478 · 01/02/2023 21:34

I've been wanting one of these for a while (but I do not need another blanket) www.atlanticblankets.com

I stroked one in a fancy shop a few years ago and it's been on my "when I'm a grown up" list ever since.

(They do a cotton one too which I would go for as I'm funny with wool)

007DoubleOSeven · 01/02/2023 21:35

I have a couple of these. Cosy in winter, cooler in warmer months.

Sold in loads of places, if you shop about they'll be discounted somewhere.

I have a Bronte by Moon wool throw on my lap at the moment. Nice throw but not a blanket and not heavy like the old wool blankets. Don’t think they do blankets from what I can see?

I did see a proper thick wool blanket the other day while browsing for something else- natural colours, blanket stitch edging. Will see if I can find it.

Timide · 01/02/2023 21:42

@minipie yes the heavy weight is why I'm after

these from La Redoute are the ones I saw. However they’re not cheap. La Redoute do a much cheaper wool blanket but the reviews say it’s thin and smells strongly of sheep.

I agree about checking charity shops - although you have to watch out for clothes moth.

minipie · 01/02/2023 21:48

They do the thicker, non smelly one in checks too <a class="break-all" href="https://www.laredoute.co.uk/ppdp/prod-324495009.aspx?dim1=3&dim2=1&lgw_code=36590-32449500900030001873222&rmatt=tsid:1038544~cid:92882~cgid:928828985727~crid:50177477&awc=1496_1675287874_eb19d5eaa23b404d4816b9193852ccab&kaPt=affiliatewindow&kaTckM=pcwr&kaPcId=58244&kaAcId=222&kaTckId=259955&kaPgmId=1496&kaAdPtId=0&kaRdt=www.laredoute.co.uk/&cod=affiliates-259955&rmatt=tsid:1038544&utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=awin&utm_campaign=259955&utm_term=Comparison+Shopping+Service+%28CSS%29&utm_content=Genie+Shopping" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here

National trust shop, online or in person have them. Mine was from an independent gift shop in Scotland.

ghislaine · 01/02/2023 21:55

I have this one from Urbanara which fits your brief. Very warm and satisfyingly heavy at night.

minipie · 01/02/2023 22:06

Oh those Urbanara ones look bang on, but in nice modern colours. Lovely

LozzaChops101 · 01/02/2023 22:07

I found a brilliant Foxford blanket in TK Maxx about 10 years ago! One of the few TK Treasure hunts that ever came up trumps for me.

For much less money OP there are these Greek army blankets on ebay

WrongOrRightMove · 01/02/2023 22:13

Definitely Melin Tregwynt as recommended by @Fourpaw melintregwynt.co.uk

We have one on our bed and it’s just amazing in the winter. It’s about 10 years old now and as good as new. My parents one is about 45 years old and perfect still.

walkinthewoodstoday · 01/02/2023 22:14

The one on my bed has the label Glencroft. It's arran style- smells of sheep!

Jdjdntbhh · 01/02/2023 22:22

I have this one, a thick super weight from Pendleton, unfortunately they are very expensive but I anticipate being buried in it 😆

chevvyroo · 01/02/2023 22:30

I remember these blankets too. I'm from an Irish family and we always had these thick blankets with satin edging. They seemed dated in the 80's when suddenly it was all about 'continental quilts'. Now I can appreciate the quality. Some of those army ones look good though.

paintitallover · 01/02/2023 22:32

We had army style blankets over top sheets as children. Some are gorgeous, but watch out for the itchy ones, including itchy wool .

Helenloveslee4eva · 01/02/2023 22:34

Charity shop ?
I’ve got loads from my late parents

I wish I'd kept my ancient family ones from the 70s!
