People who don't RTFT - what's the point?

BobDear · 24/01/2023 10:08

I don't know why, but this week, I've been on more threads than ever where multiple posters have replied to the OP without RTFT or even filtering to read the OP updates. And then disappear never to be seen again.

What's the point? Do you do this? Can you explain?

Do some people just go into Active Posts, read the OPs, give an opinion on the opening post and then move on to the next one? Do you consider that to be helpful? I get that you can't always read 200 posts -but filter the OPs posts for a gist of current state of play or important updates SURELY? It's not a poll.

I've been on MN for 15 years and it's always happened but never this much. Driving me mad.

Please stop.

Thank you.
As you were.

OP posts:

I think they just get too excited to answer, especially with a really long thread. I think some posters don’t know how to filter the OP’s posts as well.

thewinterwitch · 24/01/2023 10:13

The "see all" is a bit of a giveaway, you'd think. Drives me mad also.

Sparklingbrook · 24/01/2023 10:14

I think that’s absolutely it. And I assume they’ll be wanting everyone else to read their words of wisdom though.

On the app there's no option to filter replies to just see the OP. Very annoying! Having said that, I just opt for not replying usually if its long and I can't be bothered finding all the updates.

The filter option is available on both the mobile and tablet IOS apps, it's the little filter icon in the top right of a thread. It's been there for quite a while now. If you're not a premium member then only the OPs posts are available. It's really easy to use.

IDontCareMatthew · 24/01/2023 10:28

It's just mumsnet, a time wasting forum

Nothing special is it! Can't get too bothered over other peoples postings to be honest

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2023 10:33

Anyway - yes, OP, it's very annoying. Sometimes worse, eg threads by someone with an old or very poorly animal, discussing treatment or euthanasia, where there's a stream of self-important eejits who weigh in with 'you're being so cruel to leave an animal suffering' ... after the OP has updated to say their pet has been PTS and other posters are offering sympathy. Hmm Urgh.

RandomersAssociation · 24/01/2023 10:34

I always assume those deeply annoying posters are accustomed to some other type of forum and just don’t understand that MN works on unfolding discussion. They see a question at the top and think all that’s required is to insert their answer at the end.

It’s weird and infuriating, especially if lots of posters do it on one thread.

I use the app and filter the OP all the time. I'm on an iPhone and you just slide any comment by the OP to the left and there's a filter option there. I don't know about other phones with the app though.

TrentCrimm · 24/01/2023 10:37

I don't get annoyed as such, but I do wonder about the mindset of those that plop onto a 500 post plus thread to say

'haven't RTFT, but try turning it off and turning it back on again?'

Well thank GOD you finally showed up! Someone with exceptional problem solving skills such as yourself there, praise be!

Flavabobble · 24/01/2023 10:40

It's the internet. 'Twas ever thus.

I only have the quote or report options. I'm on a Samsung. Do you know how I can do it?!

I don't care about people not ready the full thread. It's this ^^ that annoys me. Why quote the Op. I mean, who gets rads the answers without reading the OP, why does it need to be quoted?

SunsetStrip · 24/01/2023 10:43

Sorry about the typos, lol

If someone has that opinion of MN and wants to waste their own time, they can do so by just reading - no need to waste everyone else's time by posting inanely.

Agree with this.
The mindset boggles me.
Are they dim?
Self important?

Sparklingbrook · 24/01/2023 10:46

I don’tget the ‘Not RTFT so don’t know if this has already been said …’ people.
Usually the thread is really long and was started24-48 hours ago so the chances of it already being said are HUGE. 🤔

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 24/01/2023 10:46

I assume for same reasons zombie threads get resurrected/posted on - the posters aren't paying attention to what's in front of them.

afrikat · 24/01/2023 10:49

Just to clarify there is no filter option on the Android app. It's really annoying

IDontCareMatthew · 24/01/2023 10:54

@ErrolTheDragon it's up to the individual if they post or not

In long threads with a long op I sometimes quote the op in my reply so that I can easily read their post while I'm replying rather than having to scroll way back up past all the other replies.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2023 10:55

Well of course it is, everyone has the choice whether to be an inane dick or not.Hmm

BillLius · 24/01/2023 10:56

Haven’t RTFT but Balonz.

Tamarindtree · 24/01/2023 10:56

Not read the thread but would like to award the op this badge.

People who don't RTFT - what's the point?
Ursula82 · 24/01/2023 10:57

I could also be argued that if OP’s actually posted relevant detail in their OP a bit more rather than drip drip drip… it wouldn’t be such a problem if posters didn’t always RTFT
