People who don't RTFT - what's the point?

BobDear · 24/01/2023 10:08

I don't know why, but this week, I've been on more threads than ever where multiple posters have replied to the OP without RTFT or even filtering to read the OP updates. And then disappear never to be seen again.

What's the point? Do you do this? Can you explain?

Do some people just go into Active Posts, read the OPs, give an opinion on the opening post and then move on to the next one? Do you consider that to be helpful? I get that you can't always read 200 posts -but filter the OPs posts for a gist of current state of play or important updates SURELY? It's not a poll.

I've been on MN for 15 years and it's always happened but never this much. Driving me mad.

Please stop.

Thank you.
As you were.

I assume for same reasons zombie threads get resurrected/posted on - the posters aren't paying attention to what's in front of them.

There is the funniest thread on here where the op asks for a review on a particular product (a kids bike or something) and then replies to themselves a few years later not having noticed that it was them who started the thread (no one else had replied at that point).

Agree with this.
The mindset boggles me.
Are they dim?
Self important?

Doesnt it strike you as a man? Every time I see the obvious stated with no evident attempts to read even all OPs posts, I just think of that cartoon, "Behold a MAN has arrived to tell us we are wrong"

And apart from not reading the thread a lot of people dont read the OP.

Poster gives pretty much all meaningful info in OP and three posts down is a question

OP, I'm married 12 years, 3 kids age 9, 5 and 3, own home, working full time, have pet, dont drink, knit for a hobby and cycle everywhere.

Questioner, are you married, next questioner how old are your kids, next questioner do you work, next questioner do you have a hobby. And on and on.

It's not even that difficult to either keep this info in your head for 10 minutes or scroll back to OP or even copy OP to reply.

dolor · 24/01/2023 10:59

I have ADHD. If a thread is already massive, I'm not reading all of that. I can't. I use the android app which doesn't have the filter OP posts yet, but if something is too long and I want to post, I will open a web version and use the read all OP posts.

If I'm not going to comment, I'll skim.

I could also be argued that if OP’s actually posted relevant detail in their OP a bit more rather than drip drip drip… it wouldn’t be such a problem if posters didn’t always RTFT

It's as if they like the drama with the drip feeding....assuming they aren't a troll of course

But why take mumsnet so seriously?

some posters are dedicated mumsnetter that seem to spend most of their days on it.

whereas for some of us…. We pop on to mumsnet for 10 mins whilst… waiting for the kettle to boil; waiting to collect children from after school activity etc etc… so you see a thread, pop on, drop in your thoughts on the issue, move on and don’t give it another thought.

it is how you see mumsnet I suppose. As central to your day and life or…. Worm thing you dip in and dip out very casually and don’t give much thought! I fall in to the latter, many of the impassioned mumsnwho get worked up by zombie threads and posters not reading the full thread… fall in to the latter camp!

Not read the thread but would like to award the op this badge.

Why?

former camp.

Me too and you’re right it has always happened and there have always been posts just like yours moaning about it 😁

Sparklingbrook · 24/01/2023 11:04

I dip in and out but don’t post on a thread if I haven’t read it.

Fair enough.

Others do and nothing wrong with dipping in, reading an OP, but not the drip drip , posting a quick comment and giving no further thought

Ursula82 · 24/01/2023 11:09

The beautiful irony of starting a thread on something that other have started threads on or posted about many many multiples of time in the past 😂

Of course. That’s the beauty of MN you can post whatever you like wherever you like. Including having a little moaning you want one. 😃

You can’t say that because newbies.

balloontrip · 24/01/2023 11:15

I'm autistic so I struggle with lots of information and tend to skim. I also try to avoid threads with hundreds of replies. I miss information in the OP usually never mind further replies. I do usually filter and read OP updates though. I'm sorry it drives you mad but tbh I don't really give much of a fuck. My disability affects me a shitload more than it ever will you, and I have as much right to be here and post.

Thank you

BobDear · 24/01/2023 11:16

Fair enough @Ursula82 but in my 15 years here, MN has never been this lazy before. I blame Reddit.

@SunsetStrip This also. Although my favourite is when people quote a really long OP and then comment with a single emoji.

I don’t come on an anonymous chat forum expecting anything more than “lazy” really.

Its a group of anonymous posters chewing the fat with absolutely no skin in the game whatsoever!

I tend to only read the first post in AIBU. That's the whole point of that forum - tell us what's happened, we give you our individual reactions on who we think is right (and maybe vote). If you drip feed stuff it doesn't work, and the wrong answers are your own fault!

SalviaOfficinalis · 24/01/2023 11:24

Sparklingbrook · 24/01/2023 10:46

I don’tget the ‘Not RTFT so don’t know if this has already been said …’ people.
Usually the thread is really long and was started24-48 hours ago so the chances of it already being said are HUGE. 🤔

If you want to comment specifically one someone’s post (like I’m doing to yours), you have to click on it when you see it…. This is on the first page. So I haven’t read the second page yet. So someone might have said the same terribly insightful and witty thing I’m about to say. But I try to acknowledge this by saying I haven’t RTFT.

I do always read all of OP’s posts first though.

If they’ve been on mumsnet for more than a day… they would almost certainly have come across a poster whinging about posters not RTFT!

I’ve not seen it daily. Maybe it’s all in Site Stuff, I think we’re due a Zombie thread revival moany thread though. 😂

Pretty much any longer length thread…. You’ll have someone pipping up with “RTFT”!!

I always think… the poor sod probably just logged on, read the Op briefly, tapped out their initial thought and then moved on, logged off etc and some hardened mumsnetter is pulling them up on it like it’s a key work responsibility! 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2023 11:32

The OP has been here 15 years so only a relative newbie.Grin
But that's irrelevant, the general dislike of zombie threads means that multiple threads on much the same topic are a feature, not a bug.

That’s an interesting way to look at it but aren't you setting yourself up for people telling you to RTFT if the OP’s updates include info that makes your post irrelevant.
