Can you remember old phone numbers?!

Just thinking to myself about this.

I can remember the following numbers

My grandma's home phone number..she died 15 years ago

My father's office phone number....he retired in the 1990s!

My best friends home phone number...I think I last called that number in the 1990s

My ex boyfriends mobile number...we split up in 2003!

Isn't it funny how the mind keeps these things in our head. Do you remember old phone numbers you haven't used for decades?!

I can still remember our phone number from when I was a child in the 70's - we moved from there in 1977 but I can still remember the number!

Pasadenadreaming · 24/01/2023 09:54

Yeah I can remember my best friend's number from the 80s, my Dad's office line, and a few others from that era. Nothing from late 90s onwards though!

Chasingsquirrels · 24/01/2023 09:57

Only my childhood no. "4241" lol.

SoupDragon · 24/01/2023 10:01

I can remember my childhood number that I've not used for 24 years. I can also remember the number of the my best friend from school' parents which is from even longer ago.

I do not know any of my children's current mobile phone numbers 😂

Needmorelego · 24/01/2023 10:01

01 811 8055
081 811 8181
😂

NannyR · 24/01/2023 10:02

I can remember my grandparents numbers from decades ago, I suppose one of the reasons might be that we actually had to remember and dial the number in those days, whereas now we just touch a name on a screen - I don't have a clue what the actual numbers are for the people I call regularly these days!

Same!

I know my lovely grandma's phone number and she died in 2008.

HippyChickMama · 24/01/2023 10:08

I have a very good memory for numbers, I can remember the number plate of every car I've owned since 1998 and still remember the number of the first phone my parents had which changed when I was 7. There are numbers I have a mental block with though, have been with dh for 24 years and still can never remember whether MIL's birthday is the 26th or 27th. I am autistic and often wonder whether this is a factor for me in retaining numbers

PuttingDownRoots · 24/01/2023 10:11

I know my parents house number.

A few years ago we had an incident where DH left his phone on a day out (mountain walking) but would need to contact us to meet up .. I rang his parents and left a message with them in case he rang them for my phone number... he did!

Amdone123 · 24/01/2023 10:12

I remember our phone number from when I was a child in the 70s, too. Also, my auntie's as I'd often phone my cousin ( same age) to play out. I remember my landline from when we moved into this house ( 33 years ago).
I don't know my ds' mobile or my own, but I know my dh's.
I wonder if we remember the old numbers because we said it on answering ( hello, 655 2234.....what was that all about ?!) 🤣

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 24/01/2023 10:14

Yep. I can still call my teenage best friends house by memory.

I could also log in to the now defunct Companies House website from the early 2000s by heart - 133623tvpr

All very helpful…

That's interesting. I have a relative and their birthday is either on the 6th or 7th of the month but I can never ever remember which. It doesn't matter how many times I check and try to remember, I never can.

I have an elderly relative who still answers the phone like this....I quite like, makes me feel like I've gone back in time!

Yes, definitely. And registration plates for old cars. Whereas I don't know my work mobile number off by heart.

Partly it's because you had to remember things unless you wrote them down. I could learn my work mobile number if I wanted to. Partly it's because our brains were younger and less full. More recently at age 47 I feel like a 128GB phone with 127GB storage used, and my processing chip is also a bit slow for newer apps.

My inlaws are so posh that they answer the phone with the house name. "Good afternoon, Dunroamin?" That sort of thing.

IneedcoffeeinanIV · 24/01/2023 10:23

I still remember my home phone number from when I was a kid, it was probably from around 20 years ago

Buttalapasta · 24/01/2023 10:24

Yes! But I'm not posting them as I use variations of my friends' phone numbers for all my passwords. They are the only ones I consistently remember.

Amdone123 · 24/01/2023 10:27

@Catspyjamas17 , that made me laugh 😂

Iwantabloodypizza · 24/01/2023 10:27

Yup. All of them.

But I couldn’t tell you the mobile dh has had for the last 7 years. I even have anxiety dreams where I need to call him urgently but can’t remember the number.

Indeed. I thought after I posted mine that I'd never used it as a password or bank pin or similar. Still stuck in my memory though.

I remember old boyfriends mobile numbers from over 15 years ago, when I was a teenager 🤣🤣🙈🙈

Villagetoraiseachild · 24/01/2023 10:30

I think we memorised these numbers also because we would have had to use them from a phone box....(if needed)
I remember at least five landline numbers and car reg of Dad's car when I was four. No later ones!

Sexypyjamas · 24/01/2023 10:35

I can remember grandparents number from 20 years ago (my grandad always answered saying the number). The phone number of house we had in 90s, I cannot remember last 3 digits of my first home address (early 90s) and same for my close friends number from early 00s. I'm great with birthdays though. Since having children I get brain fog.

MenopauseSucks · 24/01/2023 10:36

I remember phone numbers of school friends, neighbours, grandparents, aunts, uncles & even a great aunt!
Dialling the number, and also the old way of answering the phone with them saying the number, helped to drum them into my head.
A lot of them are now my PIN numbers...
