We are currently sitting in the dark with just our iPads. Is any one else joining in the Power Off. Also does anyone understand how the payments are calculated.?

We are doing it. I think they calculate the average you used during the few ours previous to this one and use that got comparison.

Melstarrynight · 23/01/2023 17:34

FOR comparison that should say.

ButterflyBitch · 23/01/2023 17:35

What is it?

florentina1 · 23/01/2023 17:36

@Melstarrynight did you have to register. We have not done that as we have only just heard about it

CrapBucket · 23/01/2023 17:37

Yes - we are and my battery is nearly out - boo

Yarrawonga · 23/01/2023 17:37

We aren’t. You need to have a smart meter.

Melstarrynight · 23/01/2023 17:38

Your provider has to be signed up to it. They should have info on their website. We are with Octopus and they have been running it fit a while now. This is the first time many providers have done it due to a prediction of high demand tonight.

larchforest · 23/01/2023 17:38

This is the second thread I've read in the last ten minutes - until reading about it on here I had no idea it was happening.

How and where has it been publicised, because I've seen nothing.

Eileen101 · 23/01/2023 17:40

No, I'd not heard of it until now. No emails, nothing on the app.

florentina1 · 23/01/2023 17:42

Would anyone do a link to the other thread. As I understand it you get money back if you reduce significantly your electricity consumption between 5 and 6 this evening. We heard it on the radio but did not know anything about registration to benefit

OhmygodDont · 23/01/2023 17:43

It’s only for those on smart meters who have signed up to take part with company’s who are signed up. Anyone else gets no compensation.

also it bases it off your normal use so if you a high user you will earn more by cutting down low users not a lot. There was a big thread in the cost of living section. Low users where maybe earning 20-50p even if they turned the main fuse board off while high users where earning a couple of quid by only cutting down by maybe 20-40%

I don’t have a smart meter so was purely watching to see if it was worth getting one.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 23/01/2023 17:43

I don't have a smart meter, so no.

RaininSummer · 23/01/2023 17:43

Didn't know about it but also don't have a smart meter.

acquiescence · 23/01/2023 17:44

Yes- your provider would need to notify you to opt in. We have done it several times already with octopus and earned back £1-4 each time. Cooked dinner in the slow cooker ready for 5pm and kids have iPads on, not much of an imposition really.

EmmaEmerald · 23/01/2023 17:45

If you didn't sign up to it, you aren't going to get money back? I think?!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 23/01/2023 17:45

I'd turn your lights back on @florentina1 you won't get anything back if you haven't registered to take part.

OldTinHat · 23/01/2023 17:46

I was invited by Eon Next to take part which I did for the first time in November. I got paid 46p for the hour.

They've invited me twice since but the payment is now 6p. I'm not prepared to sit in the dark and cold for an hour for 6p!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/01/2023 17:49

No smart meter here and no intention of getting one. I don’t think we’re wasteful of energy.

IneedanewTV · 23/01/2023 17:51

EmmaEmerald · 23/01/2023 17:45

If you didn't sign up to it, you aren't going to get money back? I think?!

Exactly

berksandbeyond · 23/01/2023 17:52

You have to sign up, they’re not just going to randomly give you money 🤦🏼‍♀️

nancy75 · 23/01/2023 17:53

Nope, my energy is with EDF & they are not taking part

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/01/2023 17:56

if you have a smart meter and you've not been able to sign up with your company, you can sign up to the loop app for the next one. They pay in amazon vouchers. Its less than octopus are paying for this one, but you get £2.50/kWh saved on this occasion.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/01/2023 17:56

I think it is a ploy to try and make people think how wonderful Smart meters are and encourage people to have one installed before the energy companies introduce variable charging with high punitive rates for consumption at peak times.

Porkandbeans1 · 23/01/2023 17:57

No as I refuse to have a smart meter fitted.

Topseyt123 · 23/01/2023 17:58

Never heard of it. Never even saw it publicised.

No, not taking part.
