We are currently sitting in the dark with just our iPads. Is any one else joining in the Power Off. Also does anyone understand how the payments are calculated.?

Ah, this explains why my ex (still living with) stomped into the kitchen and moaned about me putting on the washing machine for a spin (the door wouldn't open, thought it had got stuck in it's programme) as it was on timed to come on after 6pm.... Guess he must have signed up to this - would have helped if he'd mentioned it to the rest of us!!

nancy75 · 23/01/2023 17:53

Nope, my energy is with EDF & they are not taking part

That explains why I couldn't figure out how to sign up!

I'd read news articles saying edf were taking part, but nothing on their website / tweets.

Ponderingtosk · 23/01/2023 18:00

You needed to sign up, you’d have been invited I believe by your energy provider if they are in the scheme, and you needed a smart meter. just happen to see something in the press yesterday and looked into it.

I was mindful however this evening about what I cooked for dinner and we are sitting with just the lamp and tv on (because it’s so blooming cold here I don’t want the heating going off).

Jellybean23 · 23/01/2023 18:02

We're on OVO and have been on their scheme, Power Move, since 1st November. I don't think all OVO customers were invited. We don't have to reduce electricity consumption, just shift it.

To get £20 off electric per month, we have to reduce our average weekday electricity consumption between the hours of 4pm and 7pm, to under 12.5% of the total weekday usage. It's worked out on a monthly basis so we can go over some days and compensate on others. So far, we've hit target both months so £40 earned and we're well under 12.5% for January. The scheme runs until the end of March so potentially we'll get £100 total. We are home all day so it's been pretty easy to have the cooked meal at lunchtime, use the dishwasher, tumbler and oven outside the critical period.

TheHauntedPencilCase · 23/01/2023 18:04

No my provider isn't offering. Which doesn't surprise me as I've been waiting for them to connect my smart meter to the gas for months now!

TheHauntedPencilCase · 23/01/2023 18:05

Disappointed to hear the low offer though, I assumed it would be a couple of quid! We hardly use the electric though so I doubt it would be worth it judging by other posts.

HallwayDoor · 23/01/2023 18:08

@florentina1 i think you’re wasting your time. It’s only for people who’ve previously been contacted and a certain type of smart metre and they then ask you to opt in at certain times. And you’ll get something like 80p or something crap but you’ll get nothing as not registered sadly. Switch your lights back on.

But maybe that’s what they wanted, everyone to join in like you have to save the grid. It’s not the first time it’s happened people opted in have been doing it for a while now

whitesnowflake · 23/01/2023 18:12

We're with British Gas and wanted to do it but you have to be invited. Found info about the scheme on their website. Unsure how they choose to who invite. We have a smart meter.

Poppyliveshere · 23/01/2023 18:13

Yep, just done it 😊

NewBootsAndRanty · 23/01/2023 18:13

Just use Loop @TheHauntedPencilCase

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/01/2023 17:49

No smart meter here and no intention of getting one. I don’t think we’re wasteful of energy.

@Muchtoomuchtodo it's not about being wasteful, it's about spreading out the usage over the day/evening, to reduce the drain on the grid at peak time. We have enough electricity, just not enough for everyone to use it at once.

I'm not registered, I just did it tonight to reduce the drain on the grid. Not that I use much, but I guess if everyone did the same it would make a difference.

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut on the BBC there's a link to the 26 companies taking part.

gingercat02 · 23/01/2023 18:18

Yes we did.
Octopus have done 5 now and I have just cashed in my "earnings" of £15:60. It's free money so why not if bit helps the national grid too even better.
DH calls them the mad hour 😂🤣

YorkieTheRabbit · 23/01/2023 18:22

We’ve done it, I think it’s the sixth session we’ve done. The previous one was last week but that was in a morning 9am-10am.
We receive an email invite from our supplier the day before the saving session and have to opt in.

SilverHydrangea · 23/01/2023 18:25

I registered in November (Eon Next). Tonight's session was our 7th and have made between £3 & £5 a time.

TheHauntedPencilCase · 23/01/2023 18:26

Thank you @NewBootsAndRanty I didn't know about this and thought all tied into our useless supplier (can't switch as trying to recoup a £1000 overpayment....don't ask)

Namechangingagain111 · 23/01/2023 18:27

Sadly I'm on Bulb who are being taken over by Octopus but not yet.
So we didn't get an invite to the Big Power Off 🙄

EDF are taking part but you had to be specially invited to take part via email. I don't know anyone who got the email.

Abraxan · 23/01/2023 18:36

florentina1 · 23/01/2023 17:36

@Melstarrynight did you have to register. We have not done that as we have only just heard about it

As I understand it you need to have signed up to do it.
Most energy companies are taking part in some way but you need to have a smart meter to sign up.
Each company is doing it differently - some had a link to sign up to, some sent out email invitations to people they deemed eligible.

We are with E.ON and never received an email to opt in so currently not eligible.

Once signed up, if eligible, you should receive a notification via text the day before to tell you more about what to do and what times the following day.

NewBootsAndRanty · 23/01/2023 18:39

Loop which I linked to above are not a supplier, but offer a similar schene open to anyone with a smart meter who signs up and opts in. They pay in amazon vouchers.

daisyjgrey · 23/01/2023 18:39

What is it? Some type of dystopian Tory gaslighting?

Not really, no.

thisismynewface · 23/01/2023 18:44

Can someone tell me why this Monday evening between 5pm-6pm is significant for lots of extra power being used verses last Monday and next Monday (although I guess it will be ever so slightly lighter at 5pm next Monday).
It doesn't seem that cold tonight?

musicexport · 23/01/2023 18:55

It's an exercise in data collection. They now know all the people who are willing to sit in the cold and the dark on a winter's night for a £1 payment. All apparently for 'the greater good'.

sociallydistained · 23/01/2023 18:56

I don't get in from work until 6.30 so a bit useless for me 🤦🏻‍♀️
