What is it with Eddie Izzard?

Just yesterday watched a really good film, 6 Minutes to Midnight .Eddie Izzard co wrote the screenplay(based on a true story) and acted it it. He was actually very good. As I was interested in the truth being the film I browsed for articles about it. I ended up on an interview with Izzard. Now I know he's claimed to identify as a woman in the past but what it said in the article was ridiculous. It explained that Izzard is more comfortable being referred to as a woman. In everyday life and stand up he may present as a woman but he only ever takes on sle acting roles. Throughout the article he was referred to as she. Obviously he is saying he's a different sex when he feels like it but picking and choosing?That doesn't seem right?

I think it helps to see everything EI does through the lense of his self interest.

He switches depending on which guise will give him more attention and publicity at any one time.

Yes it is very odd I agree. Seems like he's a transvestite who has realised trans is fashionable and so has jumped on it to further his career. I guess it brings him to the attention of a younger audience. With people like that, it's all about free publicity.

There is a practical element to this, in that he would never be cast in a female role, because he is very far from ‘passing’, so the acting work would dry up. His ambiguity is a good way to have his cake and eat it.

He doesn't seem like the kind to do anything for cheap publicity imo. Maybe he actually just believes people shouldn't have to be constrained to stereotypes?

I suppose Eddie Izzard still looks traditionally masculine, even when wearing make-up etc. I presume they don't have the right "look" for a female role and that's why they play males, even if they present as female in their personal life?

I always assumed they were male but preferred quite a flamboyant and feminine way of dressing.

But, yes, OP, men do pick and choose when they want to 'be' a woman, and guess what, they pick the sparkly, fun clothes/make-up, having breasts, being paid more parts, rather than the endometriosis, childbirth, menopuase, rape, violence, domestic drudgery, worse pay parts, that real women can't opt out of. Makes you wonder doesn't it?

Maybe old Eddie when he described his dresses as dresses for him not women's dresses.
I don't think I'd describe the whole "I'm in girl mode" as busting stereotypes, more just reenforcing sexist stereotypes as so much of the gender stuff seems to.

I used to greatly admire Izzard as someone who stood out against stereotypes and was proud of being a ‘transvestite’ - a male who liked wearing makeup, skirts, pink, etc.

However, he’s now decided that sometimes he is in ‘girl mode’ (his wording) and wants to be addressed as she.

And I’m disappointed that he’s now conforming to the stereotypes of society’s gender and now that makes him a ‘woman’ if he doesn’t wear ‘male’ clothes.

Because that’s the new definition of a woman. According to the people with penises.

I'm not sure.

He's always struck me as quite an intelligent guy, and not the type to need or want free publicity.

But i admit to not having seen/heard much from him in recent years so don't know what his agenda is.

I wasn't aware that he now refers to himself as female?

He is straight though, I think? As in, attracted to women?

I guess it makes sense for Izzard's career. I just assumed that someone who is male who likes to be referred to as she and presents mostly as female would feel very uncomfortable in only male acting roles.
Izzard does appear very masculine and I think is actually a really good actor.

Eddie has stated that (as far as I'm aware currently) she wants to be referred to as she/her. I'm not having a go at your post here - far from it. I just think that it shows what a ridiculous world we live in that you're clearly trying to respect a person's wishes but could be accused of mis pronouning them! I used to absolutely love Eddie's comedy, saw a live performance about 10 yes ago & it was fantastic, but find it all very tiresome now.

Eddie Izzard is a highly intelligent, competitive man with significant MH issues caused by his mothers death when he was 6, and also a paraphelia for dressing as a woman. He is a man, he knows he is a man and it is absurd and offensive that he is described as a woman.
