On my own, nursing a glass of wine while I wait for the kids to finish an activity.

It's bloody lovely, time for me to scroll mn and not think about anything else and £2.99 for a glass of wine. I had to double check he had the right price at the bar.

Lots of people on their own too.

I’ve never tried a spoons but I think I might. I know a v elderly couple who get a taxi to lunch there every day and back again after !
better than microwave dinners / heating your own house and having to go to a day centre to meet people !

StripeysMum · 14/01/2023 17:37

I've not been in spoons since all the staff were laid off at the start of lockdown. Unbelievably bad attitude.

InFiveMins · 14/01/2023 17:38

Thanks to this thread I'm really craving a Wetherspoons cooked breakfast...

TimeToFlyNow · 14/01/2023 17:53

I took the kids last week. I do love a spoons burger and chips

Ignoring as much as possible the intensely questionable human that runs them, I do enjoy a Spoons.

A PP is right about the toilets though. I developed a theory last time I was in Leeds that there's just one big set of Spoons toilets deep under every city, that all the individual Spoons have corridors feeding into. Enter the toilets from Stick & Twist but take the wrong door out and you could resurface at Becketts Bank.

That is a good and accurate theory.

Eldest manages one on the south coast :)

You do know that most of the reporting on that was inaccurate?

I have a couple of friends who worked in local Weatherspoons and they were given furlough and told that they could also try to get other jobs but they’d be welcome back when their pubs were able to reopen.

Iwantcollarbones · 14/01/2023 17:59

My dd came home for Christmas with her boyfriend. They decided to grab some lunch then do some tourist stuff. Only they decided to pop into the spoons next to the nandos and spent the rest of the day there. I suppose nandos and spoons can be considered touristy when they don’t have them where they live 😂.

catandcoffee · 14/01/2023 17:59

They do an amazing Pizza,it reminds me of Pizza express but at a fraction of the cost.

Used to love the korma curry but it's been taken off the menu 😔

LubaLuca · 14/01/2023 18:02

We went in the one in Llandudno last week. Lovely building, very pleasant staff, a varied choice for vegetarians and something for everyone in a very mixed group of hungry people. We noticed it was mainly families and elderly couples in there (true of the whole of Llandudno though!), it wasn't a boozers' pub.

It's just a shame the owner is such a thorough cunt 😢.

Absolutely

Georgyporky · 14/01/2023 18:04

The reason the loos are always far away is to discourage non-customers wandering in off the street for a pee.

I always make a beeline for one if I'm after a cheap meal & drink.

I've probably eaten in at least 60, & in every one their knives are always blunt.
I asked a manager once, he just looked puzzled.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 14/01/2023 18:04

Our locals ones rubbish but always packed. I nagged dh to go with me for ages and he was right I didnt enjoy the food.

EspeciallyDetermined · 14/01/2023 18:07

I like a Sunday breakfast visit to ours. Sometimes I go on my own with my phone and diary and plan my week. Last week I went with friends, it was hammering with rain and howling with wind outside and we were warm and toasty with refillable coffee and a tasty breakfast which cost next to nothing.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 14/01/2023 18:13

Our local one has an open fire. So warm and toasty, breakie and a refillable coffee for about £7. What's not to like.

Georgyporky · 14/01/2023 18:17

My nearest Spoons is close to our theatre/cinema - which regularly does "encore screenings" of productions from the West End, NT or RSC.

A pre-theatre dinner & drinks, plus a comfy seat for the theatre (with no long queues for the loos or bar), is less than 10% of the real thing.
I missed that more than anything else during lockdown.

Leftbutcameback · 14/01/2023 18:21

I love the idea of a central toilets! However on one of our local ones the toilets are on the ground floor. And easy to reach. I don’t know quite how it broke all the rules.

sadly our more local one closed down in covid and is a restaurant now ☹️

Leftbutcameback · 14/01/2023 18:22

I can also recommend the Fulham Spoons - terrace on the river and rosé on tap

mmmmmchocolate · 14/01/2023 18:24

@catandcoffee the korma was back when I went in before Christmas. Only on a Thursday night though I think.

Westfacing · 14/01/2023 18:26

I know they're a big chain but just how do they keep their prices so low?

catandcoffee · 14/01/2023 18:26

@mmmmmchocolate oooo will check it out. thanks

Blendandmix · 14/01/2023 18:26

Some of the toilets are really lovely too) love a spoons!

BamBamBilla · 14/01/2023 18:27

How long did it take for you to get to the toilets?

Xrays · 14/01/2023 18:27

I love a Spoons.

Their veggie burgers are so nice, proper old fashioned bean burger type mildly spicy ones. 😁❤️

SirenSays · 14/01/2023 18:27

I was never a big fan, then a small one opened near where I used to live. Private little seating areas and a cocktail menu that was better and 3x cheaper than the surrounding cocktail bars. I think it closed down and I've never found another like it.
