What do you put on your porridge? I want to cut the sugar.

Started eating porridge but with a sprinkle of sugar like when I was a kid.

Delicious but am trying to lose weight.

Any alternative suggestions to make it tasty but healthier?

I like malt extract but it's still 50% sugar so I doubt it would be the solution you are looking for.

I have mine with strawberries, blueberries and a few and chia seeds. Doesn’t need sweetening and more filling.

Also I’m aware this is more calories but nutritionally better than porridge and just a spoon of sugar! I’d rather have a higher intake of calories which I can burn as I’m active than eat food with little nutrition and energy.

MrsWidgerysLodger · 03/01/2023 13:15

Dark chocolate chips and dried cranberries.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 03/01/2023 13:18

I grate an apple into the oats before I cook them. Then a pinch of cinnamon and sometimes sultanas or seeds stirred in at the end.

If I’ve got a very active day ahead, I stir in a tablespoon of ground almond. The protein and fat keeps me going longer.

Nothing cos I don't eat it. BUT have you tried canderal sugarly? It looks and tastes just like normal sugar but has zero calories. It was a godsend when I was doing SlimmingWorld.

Don’t use this! These are sugarlys ingredients. Bulking Agent: Erythritol, Sweeteners: Aspartame (0.25%), Acesulfame-K (0.17%)

WTF are these ingredients?? It’s an ultra processed food full of chemicals no doubt killing off your micro biome.

loads of sensible suggestions, raw honey from a beekeeper (I’m a beekeeper and the stuff you buy for a £1 is not real honey, honey fraud is a huge business). Also true maple syrup is fine, again check the ingredients so it’s nots maple flavoured sugar syrup.

I use whatever fruit I have lying around along with cinnamon and seeds/nuts.

Chopped dates and walnuts.

The dates go really gooey and lovely

mrssunshinexxx · 03/01/2023 13:22

Cinnamon and grated apple

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 03/01/2023 14:27

Nut butter, flaxseeds and fruit. Don't need any other sweetener. Occasionally will slice some banana and cook it in the porridge as the porridge is cooking.

pompomdaisy · 03/01/2023 16:35

Bake oats with oat milk , seeds, banana and raspberries and put yoghurt and honey on

bruffin · 03/01/2023 19:30

This is really nice in porridge, not cheap but you only need a sprinkling

The wee bit of sugar prob has less calories than a 'healthy' alternative.

PumpkinLumpkin · 03/01/2023 19:41

Nutella or peanut butter and jam Grin

Also sugar and lemon!!

But if you're trying to cut the sugar I'd say peanut butter with raspberries. Put the raspberries in towards the end when you're cooking to soften them up and it does in place of sugary jam.

Stewed apples, raisins (cooked in so they're nice and soft) and cinnamon is also very nice.

I make mine with jumbo oats, water and salt. Then when it's cooling in the bowl I add a dollop of mascapone. Perfection.

Oh wow this sounds amazing. I'd have the mascarpone on porridge with stewed apples or pears and cinnamon!! I'm going to do this Smile

PurpleMoonbows · 03/01/2023 21:03

A square of dark chocolate and some pomegranate seeds - yum!

echt · 03/01/2023 21:18

I'm going to be that poster.

I make porridge with water and put on some of whatever seasonal fruit is about. Raspberries at the moment.

Residentnumber1 · 03/01/2023 21:20

Chocolate brownie, try it, you won’t go back

Residentnumber1 · 03/01/2023 21:21

And, raspberries

MaBellOnDaLoose · 03/01/2023 21:34

I have mine with oat milk, frozen fruit (blueberries/raspberries/blackberries), microwave it, frown, say "flipping fruit's still frozen", microwave it for longer, stir it (it goes a very unappetising purple grey colour), add seeds and one tsp of brown sugar. Really, really delicious.

Alfr · 03/01/2023 21:35

I have a teaspoon of brown sugar and a splash of milk on mine, and don't give a single thought to the measly 20 calories I could be saving by not having sugar on it!

ehb102 · 03/01/2023 21:40

I have accepted that 15g of golden syrup is not the end of the world. I make my porridge half water, half semi skimmed milk and have a protein shake to get my macros. I can't be messing with other versions of sugar when the calorie count is the same.

DaisyCornflowerBlue · 03/01/2023 21:48

Half a teaspoon of Stevia sweetener. No calories.
