What do you put on your porridge? I want to cut the sugar.

Started eating porridge but with a sprinkle of sugar like when I was a kid.

Delicious but am trying to lose weight.

Any alternative suggestions to make it tasty but healthier?

Chia seeds, smushed banana, various berries, a swirl of honey, apple and cinnamon…
I don’t actually like porridge but my one year old son is obsessed so!

stargirl1701 · 03/01/2023 12:03

True Scot here! Just a wee touch of salt.

ChigedyJigHeeHawHeeHawItsDominicTheDonkey · 03/01/2023 12:06

Nothing cos I don't eat it. BUT have you tried canderal sugarly? It looks and tastes just like normal sugar but has zero calories. It was a godsend when I was doing SlimmingWorld.

Coconut sugar is nice

nobird · 03/01/2023 12:11

I love peanut butter and frozen berries. I don’t use milk either, just water - the starch makes it creamy when stirred.

I also like to mix oats with coconut yogurt and raspberries and leave in the fridge overnight. In the morning sprinkle with cinnamon and a few more raspberries. It’s so good!

Soproudoflionesses · 03/01/2023 12:12

Peanut butter or stewed apple and cinnamon

Testarossa44 · 03/01/2023 12:25

Sweet freedom fruit syrup, or a bit of honey.

MunsteadWood · 03/01/2023 12:26

Nut butter is good stirred into porridge, almond butter in particular is my favourite. Or a sprinkle of raisins or fresh fruit eg berries.

MassiveSalad22 · 03/01/2023 12:27

the only way I have porridge as it is the ultimate and no need to look any further:

loads of frozen blueberries
same amount or less (eyeball it) of oats
boiling water (not loads)
cook - takes minutes
top with almond butter and a broken up square of 90% choc

I normally skip breakfast but when I don’t, this is it!

for some reason porridge with milk disagrees with me (weird as hot milk in drinks in fine)

question about overnight oats: must they be done in the microwave, or can you cook them in a pan as usual?
(i got rid of mine as it was just taking up space on the counter)

I used to do mine by putting oats into a plastic food container. Put skyr natural yogurt over the top and mixed it through and then frozen mixed berries on top and then left it in the fridge over night and then just stirred it all through the following morning. It's the only way I can eat porridge.

BabyFour2023 · 03/01/2023 12:34

The only way to eat it; with 4 squares of dark chocolate and a handful of raspberries 😍

thanks @Tropicaliyes the idea of cold porridge makes my stomach churn, so at least i don't need to faff with that :)

Honestly it's nothing like cold porridge!! I can't stand warm porridge done with milk or water and cold porridge looks even more rancid. But I do occasionally enjoy overnight oats. I do use Skyr natural yogurt though as I find it makes it thicker and creamier than just normal natural yogurt.

HaggisWurst · 03/01/2023 12:39

Peanut butter (I eat one with no added sugar).

Geranium1984 · 03/01/2023 12:40

Frozen berries and milled nuts/seeds
Sometimes a bit of butter 😋

LeopardPrintHo · 03/01/2023 12:42

I make mine with half water / half almond milk
A mashed banana or blueberries
Chia and sunflower seeds
Squeeze of honey
Cinnamon and nutmeg

Theoldwoman · 03/01/2023 12:43

I put frozen raspberries. So delicious!

C1N1C · 03/01/2023 12:44

Protein powder (flavoured, artificially or naturally sweetened)

Suprima · 03/01/2023 12:48

Just weigh and have your sugar if you are going to eat porridge anyway. A teaspoon of sugar is about 30 calories and absolutely fine as part of your calorie allowance.

half of the ‘healthy options’ (minus the suggested spices like cinnamon) are just going to increase calories and spike your blood sugar anyway. Stewed fruit and like is just mashed up fructose. Peanut butter is super tasty but I imagine you are following some form of calorie restriction?

you’re much better off intermittent fasting or having a couple of boiled eggs instead

bruffin · 03/01/2023 12:50

Sugarly is Aspartame, which tastes horrible

Hopelessacademic · 03/01/2023 12:51

err... cinnamon and raisins in it to cook, then dark brown sugar on top :D

Brefugee · 03/01/2023 12:53

for me hot, cooked raisins are The Devil's Work.

PorkPieForStarters · 03/01/2023 12:54

I cook mine with water then, as soon as it's cooked, stir round a raw egg - sounds weird but it cooks it and blends in within about 30 seconds and you can't taste it but it makes it really creamy. Then I add cinnamon and honey. Delish and filling!

WhatDoYouWantNow · 03/01/2023 12:55

Tinned mandarin oranges
mixes berries (bought frozen)
chopped nuts
peanut butter
raisins

TitInATrance · 03/01/2023 12:55

Nutmeg or cinnamon, with a little sugar.

Alternatively, butter (or cream if using up the Christmas food)!

ivykaty44 · 03/01/2023 12:57

Skyr is a cheese technically and that’s why it’s thicker
