Anyone got COVID and a very sore throat?

Have felt ill since Wednesday and tested positive yesterday. Feel pretty ropey but this sore throat is something else, I can’t swallow without pain unless I’m on painkillers. I’m on Strepsils and drinking lemon and honey to soothe it which helps. I’m on day 4 of this sore throat and I wish it’d bugger off! Anyone want to commiserate with me?!

I found sucking glycerin throat pastilles helped

slug · 31/12/2022 10:32

these ones

Difflam throat spray is the best. Buy over the counter in pharmacy

My dh has got a really bad sore throat with it, and both my dds had a quite sore throat. I wouldn't say theirs has been as bad but they both have chronic pain and are on pain killers so maybe that has dulled it a bit for them. I didn't think of throat spray and now I have finally tested neg (yay!) I can get some for him. He has been drinking a lot of water, honey and lemon drinks and lots of Knorr chicken noodle soup

Ozgirl75 · 31/12/2022 11:29

Sore throat was my only real covid symptom but what a sore throat it was! Worse one I’ve ever had. It would literally wake me up in the night it was so painful. I basically kept alternating neurofen and paracetamol, also gargled with iodine, took difflam pastilles and difflam spray. Then on about day 5 I woke up and it was gone. Oh the relief!

NoInvitesEver · 31/12/2022 11:34

Not got it currently but when I had Covid earlier this year the sore throat was AWFUL! I took paracetamol and ibuprofen as often as allowed to take the edge off.

Piggywaspushed · 31/12/2022 11:42

Corsodyl definitely helps.

ofwarren · 31/12/2022 11:43

I found difflam piss poor compared to Ultra Chloraseptic spray. It contains benzocaine so it totally numbs your throat.

Hellocatshome · 31/12/2022 11:44

I dont know if I have Covid as I have no tests but I have had the worst sore throat I have ever experienced for the last week. Honestly calling it a sore throat doesn't seem bad enough if you see what I mean. Even breathing hurts my throat!

Ozgirl75 · 31/12/2022 11:49

That’s what mine was like @Hellocatshome - I would be laying in bed trying to breathe really lightly and swallow so gently to stop it hurting. I’ve heard “like swallowing razor blades” before but that’s exactly what it was like.

Ozgirl75 · 31/12/2022 11:51

Funnily enough, our family of 4 all had covid together but I just had the agony sore throat, my oldest son had a fever for 12 hours and no other symptoms, my DH was just hugely tired and my youngest just had a mild cold. You would never think we all had the same illness but we all tested positive.

itstimeforme · 31/12/2022 15:16

Tested positive on Wednesday too, sore throat literally like razor blades spreading to ear too. What has really helped is gargling dissolvable aspirin in water and sucking lockets. So fed up now, feel weak when I'm up for too long and cough has started. Fully vaxed and boosted. Any time scale from others when I might feel better, my lines on tests are practically black Sad

By the way beware of citrus fruit, my lovely daughter made me a freshly squeezed orange juice and the pain as I swallowed it was like nothing else, I was gripping the bed!

Piggywaspushed · 31/12/2022 16:05

O, Lordy, yes! Citrus fruits are acid!!!

Hellocatshome · 31/12/2022 16:06

@itstimeforme yes, I told my sore throat was in my ears as well and he thought I was being dramatic.

I tested positive for Covid a week before Christmas. I had a hideously sore throat for 3 days, the second night i couldn't even sleep with it. I have had bad sore throats many times but never anything like the Covid one. It felt like it was burning and stinging, was on full dose of paracetomol and Ibuprofen. Apart from that i had very mild symptoms, still have a croaky voice though.

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 31/12/2022 16:59

DH had bit of temp, fatigue and aches. Teen dd had a sore throat for a day and has felt a bit tired. She has had 3 jabs as she has congenital heart defect.

blossomtree323 · 31/12/2022 17:16

I also have bunged up ears. They don’t hurt but it’s annoying as they’ve almost popped so many times in the last 24 hours but not quite!
I also have Fibromyalgia and the joint pain has been intense 😷😫

I tested positive Christmas morning. Felt like I had tonsillitis. Throat was raw and high temp. I've had covid 3x now and this one was the only time I had these symptoms

itstimeforme · 31/12/2022 17:55

@Hellocatshome not dramatic at all, that pain is real!

@blossomtree323 sorry to hear you are in so much pain, you have my sympathies.

@NK346f2849X127d8bca260 it's unlike any sore throat I've ever had!

Can I ask those that have quite bad symptoms if they are fully jabbed, I only had my booster 6 weeks ago!

What a way to end 2022!

blossomtree323 · 31/12/2022 18:56

Yep fully vaxxed and boosted @itstimeforme

Ozgirl75 · 31/12/2022 22:14

Yes, I’d had my first two vaccines in June/July, a booster in January and then got covid in March. Apart from the sore throat it was ok but the sore throat was hands down the most painful one I’ve ever had.

Merlinsbeard83 · 31/12/2022 22:18

Tested positive on boxing day , started with very sore throat ,that stopped yesterday but got an awful cough.

Same here all tested positive all with different symptoms .
Hope everyone feel better very soon

Wowzel · 31/12/2022 22:19

I did, it lasted a week

Hopealong · 31/12/2022 22:24

Had Covid for the first time last August and other symptoms very mild apart from the throat from hell. I had my tonsils out in my thirties and thought pain afterwards was worse than child birth. My Covid sore throat was as bad as after the tonsillectomy.
It was only very painful for about 24 hours, every swallow like razor blades. Keep taking painkillers and as much fluids as you can, it will pass.
