Can I exchange this in Next?

Dd got a couple of items of clothing from a family member which are the wrong size/not something she would wear (size is far too small so noting she can grow in to).

They were probably bought online but can’t be sure. Tags still on them.

No gift receipt and we can’t ask family member to exchange. They have form for this, we asked once if they could exchange for the right size and christ, the fallout was massive, they didn’t speak to dh for three months.

Nearest next is a 45 min bus ride away, so I thought I would ask here first.

I would probably just give the store a phonecall.

dudsville · 29/12/2022 09:10

Ring Next maybe to ask them?

aSpanielintheworks · 29/12/2022 09:11

They will exchange it no problem, for another size.
But if you want a refund they will only refund at the current sale price unless you have a receipt.

icelollycraving · 29/12/2022 09:11

Look online if they are current, then call the store you are planning to visit. The tags should have codes on. You may find they were not recent items so a long bus journey just to swap them not worth it.

YouremywifenowTubs · 29/12/2022 09:13

I will try and get through on the phone.

It’s not something I would want to exchange for a different size - it’s not something she would wear.

Was hoping to exchange for something the same price.

They're under no obligation to exchange or refund the items. It would be done on a goodwill basis if they will do it at all.

Skyeheather · 29/12/2022 09:19

Are the items still available at full price?

If they have gone into the half price sale they might only offer you the sale price for them if you don't have proof of purchase.

If they were bought months ago you might not get anything.

You can only ask....... but check if they are doing refunds/exchanges at the moment, sometimes because of the sale you can't get a refund or exchange until a certain number of days after the start of the sale.

I guess I can only try! It’s such a shame.

They are Christmas themed dresses, so I am assuming they would be in a sale now.

I think you are best to call them first, otherwise how do they know you haven’t just picked up an item instore and gone to the till and asked to exchange it (so effectively stealing it?)

reallyneedtosleep · 29/12/2022 09:23

They will exchange them for the current value. If they've gone in sale you'll get the sale price.

girlmom21 · 29/12/2022 09:24

Next will refund it direct to the purchaser if they bought online. You don't need a receipt but I'm not sure you could exchange.

Changingplace · 29/12/2022 09:27

I’d check on the website that the items are still available but I think they’ll exchange them.

Not in Next but I exchanged two Christmas gifts yesterday without receipts but with tags for different items and it was absolutely fine, neither shop batted an eyelid.

Oh shit, I can’t do that. I can’t face another fit of rage from them.

I reckon you can exchange, I did in two otter stores yesterday with no receipt- just explained it was a Christmas gift and it was absolutely fine.

Doubt they’d have given me the cash back but neither minded exchanging.

RiaG91 · 29/12/2022 09:32

I'd call Next to query it. However, if you can't ask the buyer themselves then id make a point of saying thanks so much. They are lovely dresses so it's a shame she can't wear them as they are too small.

Then it leaves it open to them to suggest exchanging!

No they won't, this would only happen with the order details, which wouldn't be on the individual items.

If you had the returns note/ barcode and asked for a refund then it would go back to the purchaser. But this isn't the case here.

dementedpixie · 29/12/2022 09:36

I thought next could scan the label and it tells them if it was an online purchase. Next don't send despatch/return notes any more

Yes, so did I. I returned a jumper that was faulty and I had the receipt in my hand and the woman said I didn't need it. She scanned it told me when I had bought it and put the money back in my account and tossed the jumper over her shoulder...all in about twenty seconds.

We have tried that in the past and you’d think we’d single handedly ruined christmas. Dh has also asked them very nicely in the past to not buy clothing but we get the reply that they know what children like best. So we end up with the size they think dd should wear (she’s nearly 9 but they “think” dd should be petite like them, so they buy clothes two years too small as thats what they think they should fit into. And dresses for a dd who skateboards all day and hasn’t wanted to wear a dress since she was a toddler. But girls “should” wear dresses).

We usually give them to my friend who’s dd is a few years younger but these are Christmas themed and they don’t celebrate Christmas. Plus, money is tight this year so it would be nice to exchange for something else if we can!

Store told me to call back after 11.

(Bloody families!)

Okay, will have to ask and tread carefully.

If they were refunded, ww3 would kick off and I can’t be doing with that.

@megacat I've returned online orders loads of times and they literally just scan the barcode on the label and refund you.

elevenplusdilemma · 29/12/2022 09:56

Next are very clever now and have very individual barcodes on each item that lets the system know how / when / where they were purchased and details of the transaction. They are usually very helpful when we've had this issue.
Just go in, go straight to the till and ask. They can only say no.

RunningKatie · 29/12/2022 10:02

I exchanged with Next when facing a similar issue, they knew who had purchased the items, and what card they used but I was able to swap them.

OneFrenchEgg · 29/12/2022 10:11

God I had a massive pita trying to get Next to refund something dd bought - had all her card details etc . Managed to get a credit note in the end but was viewed as if I'd nicked them. It was very stressful so I'd just chuck anything else from there in a charity pile!
