Can I exchange this in Next?

Dd got a couple of items of clothing from a family member which are the wrong size/not something she would wear (size is far too small so noting she can grow in to).

They were probably bought online but can’t be sure. Tags still on them.

No gift receipt and we can’t ask family member to exchange. They have form for this, we asked once if they could exchange for the right size and christ, the fallout was massive, they didn’t speak to dh for three months.

Nearest next is a 45 min bus ride away, so I thought I would ask here first.

Check the item number online type it in to search bar and it should bring it up at least let's you know how much it is.

Next will exchange it no problem or give you a gift card. I've taken numerous items back without a receipt. If it's a big journey for you then yes I cld probably call just incase policy has changed recently.

If the person bought online it will bring up their account when they scan the items but just tell them it was a gift and they will let you exchange or do gift card it won't go back to their account if you tell them.

I know a lot of shops are now changing policy to no receipt then they'll do absolutely nothing. Very frustrating when you literally just want to change the size. River island did this with me for a gift my daughter received we just needed the bigger size they wouldn't let me!

I spoke to them, they will put the amount (£25 so dd will be thrilled) onto a gift card.

Thanks all, off there this afternoon!

I mean I'd speak to the nearest next and ask them, I'm guessing they would put the current value on a refund card to be used for something else - Christmas stuff is usually 50% off in their sales but why can't you just ask the relative for a receipt and then just exchange to the full value. If I'd bought something for someone I wouldn't have an issue with that I wouldn't want them to loose 50% of the value tho

It’s sorted now! Currently sat having a breather in the shopping centre! They put the value on a gift card, dd found a couple of jumpers in the Next sale and got those, she’s happy.

The relative who bought them does not respond well to that sort of completely reasonable thing, unfortunately. I can’t be arsed with the hysterics it would cause. We asked if they could exchange sizes two Christmases ago and they screamed blue murder at me and didn’t speak to me or dh for three months. Absolute madness.

Dont call today it's so busy with the sale !
I work there and the tags have all the info from the sale on them so we can tell how much and how they paid for it .
If it's current ish we can give you the full price back .

If a re gift or old stock it will be a refund card potentially

If really old then nothing

boboshmobo · 29/12/2022 14:56

Make sure you tell them it cannot be returned to their account and if that's the only possibility don't do it as that would be the de fault if bought on their online next account

Sounds like not talking to them for three months would be a win for you!

But surely the longer op waits if the items are in the sale then they will reduce further in price as time goes on.

boboshmobo · 29/12/2022 15:23

@GreenIsle no a few days won't make a difference . The systems know when and how it was purchased when scanning the tags .. super clever and stops anyone trying to return stolen items ✅

Phos · 29/12/2022 15:53

I've never had a problem exchanging stuff at Next. I didn't even need a receipt, as long as they had the tags on they were fine.

It says on their website:

Teturning to one of our 500+ Next stores is the easiest solution for many customers. It’s also the quickest way to get credited / refunded for your returns.

> No need to bring a returns' note, simply bring your items along and our team will do the rest.

Monkeytapper · 29/12/2022 16:01

are they still selling it online?…it may have been bought off vinted , new with tags that’s why she’s not given you a gift receipt

TrentCrimm · 29/12/2022 16:02

Folks, it's sorted- read the OP's posts (at least)

Smurf123 · 29/12/2022 16:05

Next are usually really really good at least they are where I am. They can tell what price was paid by the tag on the item when they scan it and I've always been allowed to exchange it to something else of equal value in store or have it on a refund card to spend in store at another time.

I actually buy baby gifts from next purely because of how good they are with the returns.

Flapjackquack · 29/12/2022 16:09

Well done OP, glad for you and DD it’s sorted and also feels like a win in that they didn’t win their horrible little game they were trying to play.

I had a relative like that, I was a tomboy and would be bought cheap make up, costume jewellery, glittery nail varnishes, sparkly jumpers 3 sizes too small. I’d rather have had nothing.

There are a few members of our extended family who won’t let dd just be herself. Similar story here - sparkly dresses, make up, pink unicorn stuff. She’s just not into any of that, she’s into skateboarding, fossils and art and expressed a hatred for all things pink and sparkly from when she could first speak! But it’s not deemed suitable for a girl by them. Drives me up the bloody wall, she’s her own person and it’s such a massive waste of their money at the end of the day. Dd is very polite and always says thank you, but when dh tries to steer them towards things she actually likes he gets told not to be ridiculous. So it’s a lost cause.

@YouremywifenowTubs - your daughter sounds fantastic!

Willowswood · 29/12/2022 17:30

I would just bin the unwanted items or take them to a charity shop. Save all the hassle.

Willowswood · 29/12/2022 17:31

Oh it is sorted? Couldn't be bothered to read the whole thread sorry. In that case I would just charity shop all future unwanted gifts by silly relatives

elevenplusdilemma · 29/12/2022 09:56

Next are very clever now and have very individual barcodes on each item that lets the system know how / when / where they were purchased and details of the transaction. They are usually very helpful when we've had this issue.
Just go in, go straight to the till and ask. They can only say no.

I got caught out on this. Purchased something in store and wore it. Then it happened to be in the sale so I bought exactly the same item. I then tried to return the online ordered one with the store receipt....they knew.....

@Whycanineverever .. this happens a lot .. I must admit I quite enjoy it when people get caught 🙈🤣... the systems are soo clever . No other store has it and it has saved them so much money for returns that weren't sold in the first place or examples like you have shown above .

verabarbleen · 29/12/2022 18:39

I used to work at next each item has a pos number on the label down into the clothes it will tell the worker on the till when it was sold and where (people used to steal things and then try and return them and we could tell it had never been sold) if the rules are still the same as a few years back they will pop it on a gift card for you or exchange it for other items .

So clever than I got an e-mail saying they had my return and were crediting my account….I didn’t return anything but they did credit my bank account with £35.
