Can you please recommend your toaster to me - especially if it's long-lasting?

Our £9 toaster has died after 12 years. It was bought as a stop gap and was really ugly. But it refused to die until now. I can see lots of shiny looking ones online but which ones stand the test of time? Only want a 2 slice one as the 4 slice ones look enormous.

Thanks

Dualit

RupertBearsScarf · 28/12/2022 18:59

I've got a Dualit, it's brilliant. Yes it's expensive, but it can be repaired and will outlast me I'm sure. It's a 2 slice Vario.

Dualit - it’s about 20 years old

Hbh17 · 28/12/2022 19:00

Dualit. Last for decades, so much better VFM than any cheap toaster.

Headunderthecovers · 28/12/2022 19:02

I've also got a 20 year old Dualit.

My 3 slice dualit is 21 years old and has never broken in that time (fingers crossed I’ve not jinxed it now!). My husband hates that it’s 3 slices but I bought it when I was single and would eat 3 slices of toast in one go but not 4 🤣

A 3 slice one would be optimal for us, tbh.

Just checked and only 3 Dualit models are made in the UK now, the rest (the more affordable ones) are made in China.

We had a phase of our toasters being cursed, for about 4-5 years we had a new one every year. This was finally solved with a dualit, which has now been going strong for about a decade I think. Still looks good too.

SillyBub · 28/12/2022 19:10

Sorry to be unoriginal but also Dualit. It was given as a housewarming gift 15 years ago and it's in daily use, either on the toast or bagel setting and works perfectly. I'm sure it was expensive but it's never let me down.

TumbleFryer · 28/12/2022 19:12

I’ve had my classic dualit toaster for 18 years and it’s never had a fault and is still going strong. Worth every penny.

QuietYou · 28/12/2022 19:19

I have a six slice Dualit that is over thirty years old. I expect it will last longer than me tbh!

bloodywhitecat · 28/12/2022 19:21

Dualit, we got ours on Facebook for a bargain £15

SwedishEdith · 28/12/2022 19:22

Thanks for the De Longhi suggestion as well but not so keen on the design.

Trouble is, my £9 supermarket one lasted 12 years as well. I wanted Dualit looks and longevity without the price 😃

Dualit

The traditional style with the clockwork timer and the lever, not the modern style, which are essentially normal toasters with a Dualit badge.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/12/2022 19:25

I bet a £9 toaster wouldn't last 12 years anymore.

theparkisrising · 28/12/2022 19:27

Dualit here too I'm afraid

Another Dualit. Got it for £10 on FB, needed one slice rack mending.

That was 6 years ago. I do love it. It's so simple and easy to control.

RedRosie · 28/12/2022 19:30

We have a 4 slot Dualit (2 slots are available!). I luffs it. They will send you parts as well. We had a new dial when it failed after ten years. Otherwise we've had it for twenty.

Ihaveawonderfulpartner · 28/12/2022 19:31

I had a dualit toaster years ago but found it took forever to brown toast. Have had a smeg double toaster for over 5 years and still going strong. Plus the colours are gorgeous.

Newwardrobe · 28/12/2022 19:31

Do the Dualit ones actually toast the whole slice ? I have to keep turning the bread as my toaster leaves about 2 inches of a slice sticking out of it.

Augend23 · 28/12/2022 19:32

I bought a Russell Hobbs one which must be 10 years old and survived 3 years of student kitchens and moved house 20 times (moved in and out every term for uni).

DellaPorter · 28/12/2022 19:33

We got our 6 slice dualit second hand 18 years ago and replaced one of the heating elements about 10 years ago. Second hand ones are well worth investigating

Augend23 · 28/12/2022 19:33

(I also took a bagel in a bag to the shop and checked it fitted as lots I found as above didn't fully toast a bagel/slice of bread).
