I am so bored I could cry.

Bored, bored, bored. Bored with the Internet, bored with my life just bored.

All my life I've had obsessions, anything from cooking, to buying a dog, to getting married, to planning a holiday, to decorating, to having a children, running etc. Nothing lasts as an obsession (I mean I don't get rid of the dog/children I still love and care but not with the same researching obsession)
I've never had to look for the next obsession it just arrives...but this time nothing, I can't get engrossed or interested in anything and it is killing me. No idea why I'm telling strangers.

Do you want suggestions?

WorrieaboutFIL · 28/12/2022 16:35

I'm like this and think I have ADHD. Hope you find your next obsession/project soon!

RLOU30 · 28/12/2022 16:36

I’m like this and so impulsive but I’ve just been diagnosed with ADHD (after 3 year wait). Not saying that you have that tho… how old are your children ?

Mydogatemypurse · 28/12/2022 16:37

Adhd

BoringPeopleGetBored · 28/12/2022 16:39

Yes please @NoSquirrels I have no idea if it will work but I can't cope like this.

@WorrieaboutFIL I come from a family where no one else is NT but I've always coped/liked my quirks so not needed to be diagnosed but I can't live like this, I feel rudderless.

Get tiktok

Inextremis · 28/12/2022 16:40

I've been like that all my life, but have never considered it a disorder! I'm between obsessions at the moment mainly because we're waiting to move back into our house, which is being renovated, and I can't settle to anything. I have a feeling that my next obsession is going to involve Bob Ross and buying far too much paint... on the plus side we're currently enjoying the fruits of my pickling and mead-making obsessions from earlier in the year!

BoringPeopleGetBored · 28/12/2022 16:42

@RLOU30 have they suggested any changes to help? What made you look for a diagnosis if you don't mind me asking. Children are late teens so fairly self sufficient, over the last few years the obsessions have become less intense but I've always had something.

I feel like this too. I can’t get that feeling from anything atm. Even my long term obsession is making me feel meh. I wonder if it’s depression but have been there before and I dont think it is.

Hawkins001 · 28/12/2022 16:45

For me it's usually a news article, or a national geographic article that inspires me for different project ideas, on occasion it's film or TV series that also influence my projects too.

JamSandle · 28/12/2022 16:46

Definitely sounds like ADHD. I'm the same.

BoringPeopleGetBored · 28/12/2022 16:47

@Inextremis I didn't feel it was a disorder until now, because I'm so bored, physically mentally, it is hard to explain but it is as if there is a nothingness and I don't like it.

@Cosycover my DS suggested TikTok but I find videos too slow, forums usually fill a lull because reading is much quicker but I feel that there is nothing new , everything is just same problem different poster. Groundhog day is what it feels like (appreciate the issue is with me not anyone else)

Delabruche · 28/12/2022 16:48

I feel like this and my dad is like this too. Aaargh.

Merlott · 28/12/2022 16:50

Start watching something you'd never normally watch. Something you really think you don't like or is boring. The stronger the anti-reaction the better!

That usually either interests me or makes me think of something else more interesting!

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 28/12/2022 16:50

Same but I’ve put it down to my kids now being in high school and me not having properly gone back to work. I feel like I need a new direction but I’ve no idea where to start.

Soonenough · 28/12/2022 16:50

I am just bored of the monotony of life. No obsessions or interests that I feel able to commit to. Then I sometimes get a rush of enthusiasm and am happy for a time. Does anyone else feel guilty as there are so many bigger problems ?

2reefsin30knots · 28/12/2022 16:52

Similar to 'special interests' in autism. I also usually have a special interest on the go, but don't particularly at the moment. TBH I am kind of enjoying the rest, as it is quite intense during very 'interested' periods!

I'm not sure you can contrive an interest. You might just have to wait for something to hit.

MyDogStoodOnABee · 28/12/2022 16:52

This is me!
Buy a journal and become obsessive about planning what you’re going to obsess over in 2023. Some ideas - improved career, retrain, get fit, turn a hobby into a business, learn an instrument, set up a blog, learn a language, become a virtual assistant, write and self publish a book, set up a hobby club, go to toastmasters

BoringPeopleGetBored · 28/12/2022 16:53

@MiniDinosaur Google seems to suggest depression but I don't think it is either.

@Hawkins001 God I'm going to sound crazy but it is as if I'm full, normally I could pick up a journal and occupy myself but I can't even read an article, like if you have eaten a full meal and can't face the last potato.

@JamSandle @Delabruche and others, thanks at least I feel less alone but sorry you feel like this, it is horrible.

I usually love reading but my anxiety is so high at the moment I can't concentrate. I'll read a sentence and it just doesn't sink in, so I read it again and again and still don't get it.
Sometimes my eyes scan a whole page and I don't have a clue what I have read.
It's really getting me down.

Ohnotheydidnt · 28/12/2022 16:53

Same OP!! I'm exactly the same. I am ND and obsessions keep me sane and happy

😊 but I have no obsession at the moment and I hate it!!

I was thinking that I sometimes bridge these periods with a nice dot-page notebook 😂

Oher · 28/12/2022 16:57

I don’t have obsessions but I’m
usually happy with my hobbies and out a lot of effort into them.

Lately just nothing. Don’t enjoh tjose hobbies anymore, can’t think of new ones. Books and TV seen dull.

I think after Brexit-stress, pandemic-panic and home educating / lockdown exhaustion, is-Russia-starting-WW3-anxiety, a series of incompetent prime ministers and even the Queen dying, I’m just drained. Out of puff. Maybe slightly depressed.

Maybe the world’s been harder than usual for a while and you have the blues, basically.

watchfulwishes · 28/12/2022 16:58

Maybe you need a bit of quiet. Boredom is an important part of the creative cycle.

NoSquirrels · 28/12/2022 16:58

OK, some suggestions.

YNAB. Budgeting/money-management app that’s a) very useful b) gamified in a way and c) relatively complex learning curve. Loads of Reddit subs, videos etc to discuss with other nerds.

Investments/FIRE. Similar to above when you’ve milked the day to day budgeting aspect.

Weight-training. Easy to progress, lots to research, satisfying dopamine hit, great for your bones etc.

Or cycling. People do seem to nerd out about that!

Or climbing?

Planning a really complicated trip abroad to do something specific. Camino Real, Maccu Picchu, Great Barrier Reef, whatever you have a tangential interest in that you can expand.

Gardening, allotment-style vegetables. Loads to plan now if you want to get started in spring.

Learn a language. Or get into chess. Or crochet or quilt. Painting?
