Bored, bored, bored. Bored with the Internet, bored with my life just bored.

All my life I've had obsessions, anything from cooking, to buying a dog, to getting married, to planning a holiday, to decorating, to having a children, running etc. Nothing lasts as an obsession (I mean I don't get rid of the dog/children I still love and care but not with the same researching obsession)
I've never had to look for the next obsession it just arrives...but this time nothing, I can't get engrossed or interested in anything and it is killing me. No idea why I'm telling strangers.

As others have said, that's ADHD. I'm the same and I usually find it's way worse in the winter cause you're limited as to what you can do with the shitty weather and dark days 🤦‍♀️

I can't even suggest anything cause I too am in the same boat right now. January is gonna suck even more cause there's literally nothing going on!

QueenieL1 · 28/12/2022 17:58

I have obsessions and interests too. Certain films and TV series, I spend hours researching them on Google and have all this information in my head, like an encyclopedia.
I'm terrible for losing things too and sometimes if I'm looking for something in a pile of stuff, I can't see it, even though it's there.
I'm really good with money though.
Always had really intense crushes my whole life, when one ends I will have a new one. But find actual relationships very hard. I don't like the day to day reality and mundaneness of relationships. Prefer to daydream about them.
I'm waiting to be assessed for autism.

Chipsandeggagain · 28/12/2022 18:05

What will getting Tiktok do please?

itwasboundtohappen · 28/12/2022 18:09

Have you ever been obsessed with people? Like really intense crushes?

oh god yeah when I get them they are awful. The hyperfocus goes into overdrive, fueled with the massive highs of the crush. It becomes all consuming and exhausting. When it happens I want to pull my brain out of head to make it stop!

Winterpetal · 28/12/2022 18:10

I’m the same
but mine are all negative 😢
im being assessed for autism this year ,been on waiting list 2 years
I wish I could not get obsessed as I do ,

Winterpetal · 28/12/2022 18:15

I was on tick Tok

untill I started getting animal cruelty videos,
really awful stuff
,and it upset me so much ,I didn’t ask for it ,or look at anything remotely like what was sent me .
its still images in my head I can’t get out
i deleted the app then and I will never go back on it

DucklingDaisy · 28/12/2022 18:22

I've decided to start doing a daily page of a sketchbook, doodling rather than realistic drawing.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/12/2022 18:26

would you be interested in exploring why you jump from obsession to obsession, rather than having longer term interests?

Failing that it doesn’t sound like you’ve done health, and mid-life is a good time for taking up say weightlifting. Charities and lobbying are also good and given the world is going to hell in a handcart there’s plenty of scope.

ItsMeHiImTheProblem · 28/12/2022 18:27

I relate to what you said about relationships. I struggle with them, even when I love someone I get bored so quickly, go on dating apps or contact exes, seemingly for a quick thrill, I don't know. I thought I was BPD, but maybe ADHD is more accurate. I haven't found a way to solve it yet and running out of attractive men of my age! I think the solution is to find someone who likes doing things, different things, going to new places etc

Reindear · 28/12/2022 18:28

I get like this and I’m NT. obsessions don’t always mean ADHD… people can be so quick to ‘diagnose’ others 🙄

Branster · 28/12/2022 18:30

Could you try and get satisfaction from just doing nothing? A sort of time for reflection. You and yourself only, your mind, your thoughts. From tine to time.

Also, ask yourself, what are you running away from? Why do you need an all absorbing all consuming activity (or obsession)?

Or it may be that's just the way you are and always looking to learn and master a new skill. Perhaps choose a really difficult project, like building a kit car (not a toy car, the real ones). It will keep you occupied for ages, even if you are a mechanic.

BoringPeopleGetBored · 28/12/2022 16:39

Yes please @NoSquirrels I have no idea if it will work but I can't cope like this.

@WorrieaboutFIL I come from a family where no one else is NT but I've always coped/liked my quirks so not needed to be diagnosed but I can't live like this, I feel rudderless.

No one else in our family was ND until we realised and understood what it really was.
Now most of us are!

QueenieL1 · 28/12/2022 18:35

@ItsMeHiImTheProblem Yes, I don't like too much intimacy or reality about someone, like seeing their dirty boxers or their toilet habits 😳. I just don't like to get that close. I've never actually had a proper relationship with someone I was attracted to.
I'm about to start therapy for BPD although not diagnosed yet. You can have both. I didn't diagnose myself but was told by secondary mental health I fit the criteria for autism.

Paq · 28/12/2022 18:38

Duolingo?

Cherrypi · 28/12/2022 18:39

I'm like this. 30 days of Yoga with Adrienne starts on YouTube on 2nd January. There's a futurelearn course about novels starting in January.

FancyFanny · 28/12/2022 18:49

I'm like this- I always need a project!

The last few weeks it's been Christmas based stuff that's kept me occupied- planning decorations, recipes, present shopping etc.

The last couple of days it's been scouring the internet sales and going shopping- but run out of cash now so looking for the next obsession- today has been busy with friends but the boredom is setting in now after two hours.

I'm now starting to plan a long weekend abroad we have in Jane- I'll be putting together my wardrobe, planning what we'll visit, sights to see, restaurants and shops etc.

Planning on decorating in Feb so will be able to start planning that and buying accessories and things. Putting together a mood board, gathering paint samples etc.

I don't think I have ADHD- I just like to be occupied.

ItsMeHiImTheProblem · 28/12/2022 19:05

@QueenieL1 i don't like that side of a relationship either.
I was diagnosed with traits of BPD and PTSD earlier this year by a psychiatrist. However, I feel ADHD is involved too.

DuchessOfDisco · 28/12/2022 19:07

Oh @BoringPeopleGetBored I relate so much, but I’m also awaiting ADHD (inattentive type) assessment. I’m also terrible with getting into debt, loose things easily, generally quite disorganised and also very dreamy (as in away with the fairies as opposed to attractive) as well as flitting from hobby to hobby.
I’m currently also in a lull, with also wondering what I’m doing career wise (left long term job, retrained but only lasted 3 months as I was so bored so not sure whether to go back to old career, try new career again (it cost a lot to retrain), or start something completely new.
I hate this in between bit

Mummysgogetter · 28/12/2022 19:15

I relate so much to this thread. I am currently going through a very “bland” period, where nothing on TV/kindle inspires me and everyday just feels like a variation of blah 😕

I also tend towards inappropriate crushes just for the feel good chemicals I get in my brain from them. If it’s reciprocated and I know for sure they like me back, the thrill dies off.

I too feel very guilty about feeling so flat and bored when I’m so lucky to have my health etc.

BellePeppa · 28/12/2022 19:30

Do a jigsaw. You can become really absorbed in them and they’re very therapeutic.

Would you consider colouring? There are some lovely books, take a look on Amazon. It’s the sort of activity that is easy to pick up and put down, no huge prep required or waiting for paint to dry or anything. Plus if you’re inclined to be a bit obsessive about things there’s plenty of opportunity to collect and try out different pencils etc.

tiddlywinks2 · 28/12/2022 19:58

You're me!!

I go through stages, I started getting a bit like you are now, hated it. I decided to put loads of random ideas into a hat, then picked one out.

Ideas were:
Learn to knit
Learn Spanish
Learn to cook different cuisines. Had them listed in the hat Grin
Do a skydiving course

I found it fun, I never knew what I'd end up doing, but I always stuck to it and it always ended up with me being obsessed!

Somethingsnappy · 28/12/2022 21:49

I'm following, as I'm like this too. I'm NT as far as I know, but my whole adult life has been one intense obsession/project after another. They have often led to studying, so now I have too many qualifications/degrees, in too diverse subjects to be much use really. I love learning and always seem to need to turn an interest into something more.
