Coughing so much it makes me vomit

Hi - I’ve had the bad cold that a lot of people have since Monday.

Today and yesterday especially I’ve coughed a lot - a dryish cough but at one point both yesterday and today it was so bad that it made me vomit.

I haven’t had a bad cough like this for a long time - it seems to have calmed down for the evening a little (and I have taken Night Nurse which seems to help) but don’t know if generally I should be worried and do something else?

Thanks a lot 😊

No it will be fine. I was the same. I ever coughed up blood too but it was viral abd it passed. Sending hugs as it is miserable x

bellac11 · 22/12/2022 20:40

Yes this is common, there is a thread running about the cough thats making people wee themselves, its so strong.

Pointless2 · 22/12/2022 20:42

Thanks both - oh yes I think I saw that thread - I should have gone back to look. I’ll read it now.

Thanks @Bronzeisthecolour 😊 - how long did your cough last for? I know it has only been 4 days but I can’t feel mine starting to get better.

Ugh the hell cough. I had several explosive nosebleeds from coughing so hard. Completely awful.

Bronzeisthecolour · 22/12/2022 20:45

Well I rang Dr and was assessed etc. And I laughed when I was told to take a week or 2 off! But honestly I ended up off for a week- never been off that long apart from covid. I continued coughing another week or so .... sorry!

MrsKrankyPants · 22/12/2022 20:47

Yep, my DH was sick all over the kitchen yesterday while having a coughing fit. Luckily I wasn't sick while coughing.

Thanks @Bronzeisthecolour I can totally see how you would have a week off with this (I do school admin and am ill in the school holidays). Oh dear - another week. I read your sorry at the end of your post and kind of laughed ruefully which almost set off another coughing fit but luckily I have averted it as I can’t vomit the night nurse I have just taken. Oh the joys 😞. I am glad you are better now.

Yes the hell cough! Sorry you’ve both had it too @MrsKrankyPants and @RoseAndGeranium and your dh Mrs Kranky.

Thanks for the reassurance, I was reading things about bronchitis on Google.

I have had this since Sunday. It's getting worse. The dry cough is so bad and makes me nearly vomit....the only relief is when I'm in a hot bath, the steam helps a lot. In bed propped up with pillows expecting another sleepless night.

I had that - turned out to be whooping cough.

I am really sorry @schnauzerbeard that sounds so hard - I am delaying gong to bed because of the cough. Have been drinking hot lemon, honey and ginger and it was working for a bit but the cough is creeping back in.

My sister did it tell me to do inhalations over a bowl of hot water - I just haven’t been together enough to do it.

@KittensNotMittens whooping cough 😞 I hope you are better now.

I have this as well, it's so dry too. Thinking of you!!

Tailfeather · 22/12/2022 23:46

I have it too. Currently in bed with a sick bowl. So wheezy but I just can't get the phlegm up. Are you breathless too.

Pointless2 · 23/12/2022 00:01

Thanks @OooohAhhhh - I am thinking of you too.

No not breathless @Tailfeather - are you feeling breathless? Wheezy sounds hard.

I am currently on the sofa coughing every few seconds and now bringing up a load of spit etc and spitting it into tissues. Lovely 🤢. I don’t know how I am going to sleep.

I hope everyone feels better soon.

Thank you op. Hope everyone got some sleep. I woke up with red blotches on my face. Feel so run down. Hope everyone else that has it is a day further on to recovery!

Pointless2 · 23/12/2022 08:01

Terrible night 😔. The cough is awful - dry and echoey at its worst. Am considering phoning the GP today. It abated during my shower just now but I can’t stay in the shower all day sadly 😫.

What horrible timing as well - I hope you manage to rest today @schnauzerbeard and everyone else.

I have this as well - have had to cancel 4 Christmas activities so far 😞 So fed up with it! Sound like a seal!

LunaDeet · 23/12/2022 10:14

I have the hell cough too - sympathies for you all. It's bloody awful.

nowtygaffer · 23/12/2022 10:15

I've got it too, on my 12th day of it. Fed up!

LunaTheCat · 23/12/2022 10:18

I have flu at the moment..I have coughed so much I pooed myself 😏
I feel proper sorry for you.

nowtygaffer · 23/12/2022 10:21

I've never had anything like this. I normally never get a cough but this is just dreadful.

Pointless2 · 23/12/2022 10:46

So sorry for everyone - I spoke to the GP - he recommended Difflam either in spray or lozenge form or an antihistamine.

Does anyone know if I can take the antihistamine at the same time as using Difflam and which antihistamine might be best? If

OP posts:
nowtygaffer · 23/12/2022 11:02

Not sure about the antihistamine. My gp has prescribed codeine, it has something in it that reduces the cough apparently. Worked a bit last night but still spent hours choking.

nowtygaffer · 23/12/2022 11:05

I normally take beconase up the nose thing for hay-fever so I might try that.

caffelattetogo · 23/12/2022 11:07

An expectorant from your pharmacy may help loosen the crap so you can cough it up. Pharmacists are your friends with this kind of stuff. Also, forcing yourself to stop coughing before you puke. I regularly get one cough away and then have to stop myself and start again once the puke risk has gone. I get this cough every year.
