Coughing so much it makes me vomit

Hi - I’ve had the bad cold that a lot of people have since Monday.

Today and yesterday especially I’ve coughed a lot - a dryish cough but at one point both yesterday and today it was so bad that it made me vomit.

I haven’t had a bad cough like this for a long time - it seems to have calmed down for the evening a little (and I have taken Night Nurse which seems to help) but don’t know if generally I should be worried and do something else?

Thanks a lot 😊

Another bad night from coughing. How is everyone else?
I have a headache from coughing so much.

Wrongsideofpennines · 23/12/2022 12:20

Steam inhalation might help. Bowl of water over a radiator at night. You could also try some Active Cycle of breathing exercises to help clear any crap off your chest.

I have a cough, had it for the last 10 days. Then I tested positive for cough 2 days ago.

I won't be testing for covid, I'm so over it!

I have this 🙁 I've been sick every day for the last days, loads of phlegm coming up. Have to sit on the toilet to cough/vomit otherwise I'll wet myself... Have had the odd nosebleed because of it too. Thought it was pregnancy related (almost 31 weeks) but it seems I'm in good company.

Hope you all feel better, it's truly awful

custardbear · 23/12/2022 12:50

This was my first indication I had whooping cough to be honest - before that it felt like a bad chest infection that wouldn't shift for weeks

PocketRainbow · 26/12/2022 18:47

Hope everyone’s feeling much better now. How long did it take to pass?

I have a horrible, hacking dry cough. I am coughing so hard it is is making my chest muscles and ribs hurt, and have the worst headache of all time. I can’t relieve it. Read that lying on your front helps and that does seem to help. I have a horrible fever too and slept for an hour earlier. I never nap in the day, ever. Very worried after googling that I’ll end up bursting a blood vessel in my head or chest, or worse. I know it’s irrational but my word I have never had this level of wheeziness! COVID negative but COVID felt better than this when I had it a year ago.

nowtygaffer · 26/12/2022 22:17

I've had it 2 weeks now. It's awful.

PocketRainbow · 26/12/2022 22:20

@nowtygaffer 2 weeks?! Oh gosh, bless you. It’s horrible isn’t it.

Have you found anything to help? Is yours a dry cough? Whenever I cough my chest hurts :(

nowtygaffer · 26/12/2022 22:24

No I've got loads of phlegm (sorry for tmi!). I'm taking codeine at night that gp gave me. Hope yours doesn't last as long!

Pointless2 · 26/12/2022 22:24

I started turning a corner yesterday and today almost feel back to normal (I am still coughing but it doesn’t hurt) - all in all it lasted 7 days and in the middle of it I thought it was never going away.

I wish everyone a swift recovery too Flowers.

Does anyone else have a sore throat as well as a cough?

I had a spicy Thai curry for dinner and that cleared the sinuses but I still have a wheeze.

Bobbybobbins · 26/12/2022 22:36

I am on day 7 and first day of not vomiting with it. Also starting weeing while coughing which was even worse. Never known anything like it!

Pelo22 · 26/12/2022 22:42

Just be careful if you're coughing constantly
I thought I had a chest infection a couple of years ago, rang OOH and went for an appointment
Waiting in the waiting area to be seen and they came out with a nebuliser and I was nosying at who it was for
Yeah, that would be me. Turns out coughing continuously kind of means you can't really breathe and I had pneumonia. 6 nebulisers, 3 courses of antibiotics and 2 of steroids

PocketRainbow · 26/12/2022 22:43

@Pelo22 how constantly, is constantly? Worried now. I’d say I cough 4/5 times in a row every 90 seconds-2 minutes. No history of asthma or chest infections

Pelo22 · 26/12/2022 23:42

@PocketRainbow I couldn't stop. As in I couldn't stop coughing long enough to get a mouthful of water or try to catch my breath. Every time I took a breath, I coughed so it was breathe in, cough, breathe out, cough etc

Adarajames · 26/12/2022 23:46

I’m on week 8 and still occasionally coughing! Does take an age to get rid of this year it seems! Hope you feel better swiftly

Jellybean2023 · 26/12/2022 23:51

I had the dry cough for a week, then the vomiting with it, turned phlegmy and into a chest infection for another 10 days. Vomiting stopped at least. Was awful.
Know about 4 other people with it.
I hope you get some rest

Alisonscutehairflick · 26/12/2022 23:53

I had this. I turned into a bacterial chest infection and I had to have antibiotics in the end

Alisonscutehairflick · 26/12/2022 23:53

It* not I!

Alisonscutehairflick · 26/12/2022 23:56

Oh and mine lasted five weeks in total and im
still coughing at night now despite it being a lot better!

I have had this since Sunday. It's getting worse. The dry cough is so bad and makes me nearly vomit....the only relief is when I'm in a hot bath, the steam helps a lot. In bed propped up with pillows expecting another sleepless night.

Pop a pillow or 2 under your mattress instead. That way you'll still be raised up but It's much more comfier than trying to sleep propped up against a load of pillows. Especially if you're like me and sleep front or side. It saves having a sore neck the following day.

Wellthankyou · 26/12/2022 23:59

Have had the same / similar lergy…have worked 2 days at a health care environment since 23rd

middleager · 27/12/2022 00:01

I've had this for a week. Being sick and weeing myself. Taken to sleeping in a sanitary pad and with a towel to cough into in case the sickness comes before i can reach the bathroom.
I cough continuously. It is relentless and nothing works.

Wellthankyou · 27/12/2022 00:02

Didn’t finish post !
Have really struggled with Christmas and working . Not able to speak clearly with residents and just really struggling with family…absolutely no voice!

PocketRainbow · 27/12/2022 00:12

Irrationally worried about going to sleep in case I’ve got something serious like pneumonia or a bad chest infection… health anxiety is saying, what if you don’t wake up? I can’t even take 3 bites from a slice of toast without getting the urge to cough, so what if it’s serious and I am oblivious? Someone tell me I am being ridiculous fgs, I know tomorrow I’ll read this and think it was all a fuss about nothing.
