Sides of the bed

I know most people who share a bed have "their side".

My question is, if you find yourself on your own in your bed, do you still just stay in your side?
And if you visit somewhere (hotel, friends...) alone and have a double bed, do you still sleep on the same side as normal.
Or do you go wild and sleep in the middle? 😆

Just my dh has been away for a few nights and I have not budged from my side.
And I stayed in a hotel alone recently, massive bed, luxurious. And I still stayed on my side 🙄😁

I’m a middle of the bed sleeper, dp gets a third of the bed 🤣

SpideyCraw · 15/12/2022 21:25

In our bed, I always stay on my side.

In a hotel, I take either side without thought!

pelargoniums · 15/12/2022 21:27

I go over the other side for a treat!

ouch321 · 15/12/2022 21:27

Side nearest bathroom

WandaWonder · 15/12/2022 21:27

This is totally a genuinely great question

We have sides but when I am in hotel/other large bed alone I sleep where it feel right

So if the bed is against a window or wall I don't sleep that side

If in the middle of the room the side closest to the main door type thing

I move around alot

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 15/12/2022 21:28

I'm right side nearest door incase intruder comes in so they kill me first according to DH 😅When he's away I starfish the whole bed with 4 cats. If in hotel again I'm nearest door for above reasons 🤔I'm weak as fuck and he's ex rugby player but no, I have to fight off intruder first.

bloodywhitecat · 15/12/2022 21:30

I still sleep on 'my' side despite DH not having shared our bed for a year now (he had a stroke in November 2021 and when he came home he was in a hospital bed downstairs until he died in Feb), sleeping in 'his space feels wrong somehow.

LivingOnAPrayerYes · 15/12/2022 21:30

We have sides because all of our stuff is that side: water, phone, ear plugs, tissues, etc. So if DH isn't there then I pretty much stay on my side (but possibly move more to the middle!)

But we don't have a set side, left or right that we have to be, so any other bed we stay in (holiday, friends, family) we will pick either side when we arrive. Usually based on which side the toilet is (DH more likely to get up in the night) or the TV is (I'm more likely to watch TV in bed)

Now, the most shocking thing I ever read on MN was an OP who did not have a side of the bed at home with her partner, so every night they went to bed and just slept whichever side they felt like. MIND BLOWN!

whatsagoodusername · 15/12/2022 21:30

In a hotel by myself, I sleep on the side with a bedside table so I can put my glasses and water somewhere I can reach.

At home alone, I stay on my side.

KangarooKenny · 15/12/2022 21:32

Always the same side. The dog sticks to his own side too.

HappyLondonWoman · 15/12/2022 21:33

I completely understand that bloodywhitecat

I think when I visit my parents over the holidays, on my own, I might try his side. Just for fun. Ring the changes after 30+ years 😉😁

If I'm on my own I tend to stick to the same side. I occasionally go on the other side but whichever side I'm on, I can't sleep facing towards the middle of the bed. It just feels wrong.

Frostine · 15/12/2022 21:33

Always sleep on my side even if away.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 15/12/2022 21:34

I sleep mostly on my right side and I like face ‘out’ of the bed so I always have the same side wherever we are. Luckily DH is the opposite so we sleep back to back.

HappyLondonWoman · 15/12/2022 21:35

LivingOnAPrayerYes I'm with you in the mind-blowing! Imagine not having a side 😮

gogohmm · 15/12/2022 21:36

I generally sleep on the same side, thankfully when I met dp he slept on the other side. It should be required in dating apps in my opinion, it's essential information. I have to sleep on the left!

H1Drangea · 15/12/2022 21:37

We have our sides because of inhalers ( me ) books , face cream , hand cream etc ( mine ! )
when I’m on my own , it’s all my space, and I sleep in the middle

We’ve just been on holiday , and we had twin beds , oh my Lord , I loved it !

Remainiac · 15/12/2022 21:39

We have been married for almost 30 years but it took quite a long time to train DH into the concept of “sides”. Left to his own devices whoever got into bed first would just pick a side 😳🤷‍♀️. Savage.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/12/2022 21:41

I am always the side away from the door.Except in PILs house, oddly...

Clingfilm · 15/12/2022 21:42

We swap sides whenever I change the sheets as I also like to sleep facing outward and it gives each side's hip and neck a rest after a week (or two, three etc, let's not open that can of mumsnet worms😁). And it probably evens out the wrinkles in my face...

Chelsea26 · 15/12/2022 21:45

I always sleep on my side on our bed, and ‘a’ side in a different bed (doesn’t have to be the same one) but I sleep on my side, facing out and I DO NOT MOVE, so whoever I’m sleeping with has 5/6 of the bed to do what they wish with. If DP isn’t in the bed at night I get up, turn the top corner of the duvet over and the bed is made.

I was very popular at sleepovers as a teen and always offer to have the single bed in a cottage or whatever as I only use half of it anyway!

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 15/12/2022 21:49

I always sleep on the same side, regardless of where we are and whether or not I’m on my own. I think it’s mainly because I am very shortsighted and can’t see at all without my specs, so I need to be able to put my hand on them immediately if I have to get up in the night. But also because I always sleep on my right side, and need to be facing out of the bed rather than in to the middle. Because I am a bit weird.

This sounds like dangerous chaos to me.

Upsidedownagain · 15/12/2022 21:55

Yes I always stay on my side even if alone in the bed. I'm not sure if I always stick to it when sleeping elsewhere. At my parents actually I sleep on the other side. Not sure re hotels. I tend to prefer to be away from the door. I'm not worried about intruders lol and it seems cosier to be away from the possible draught. Or maybe I am scared and I prefer to hide behind DH - he is much bigger than me!

GettingStuffed · 15/12/2022 21:56

I sleep on the side nearest to the power socket as I need to plug my clap machine in
