Sides of the bed

HappyLondonWoman · 15/12/2022 21:23

I know most people who share a bed have "their side".

My question is, if you find yourself on your own in your bed, do you still just stay in your side?
And if you visit somewhere (hotel, friends...) alone and have a double bed, do you still sleep on the same side as normal.
Or do you go wild and sleep in the middle? 😆

Just my dh has been away for a few nights and I have not budged from my side.
And I stayed in a hotel alone recently, massive bed, luxurious. And I still stayed on my side 🙄😁

We have sides at home but we noticed that instinctively dh always has the side closest to the door if we sleep anywhere else. It isn’t something we do consciously but it happens every time

MissAmbrosia · 15/12/2022 21:59

I always sleep on my side no matter where I am. If I'm on my own I might gravitate slightly more towards the middle. But never starshaped right centre or anything. With DH we tend to cuddle each other but move in the night so he might come more on my side and vice versa. I am a proper fidget though and my hip creaks.

Cas112 · 15/12/2022 22:00

No, when my partner leaves for work in a morning I HAVE to roll onto his side, I don't know why😂

abblie · 15/12/2022 22:00

Yes I sleep on one side 🤣 everytime I roll into middle I roll back lol

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 15/12/2022 22:05

I always sleep on the left at home, and elsewhere it's wherever i feel safest and Dh can 'protect 'me i.e. he goes closest the door in a hotel 😅

When I was unwell a few days ago and went for a nap, I slept on DH'S side. Not sure why 🤷‍♀️

TheDogsMother · 15/12/2022 22:08

We have our own sides even in hotels, holiday rentals etc. But if either of us is away the other will swap sides of the bed. No idea why !

Clevs · 15/12/2022 22:08

I usually use the pillow on 'my side' but put my head on the side that is nearest the middle of the bed so the rest of my body is in the middle.

Edwardwilliamnancy · 15/12/2022 22:09

I'm single and only ever sleep on one side of the bed. I sleep right side and will choose right side wherever I am subconsciously.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/12/2022 22:11

Always the top bunk for me, unless the other 'resident' is at Court overnight then I use the lower bunk.
😳

AboutTheYoungIdea · 15/12/2022 22:12

I’ve been separated/divorced for about 5 years but it’s only recently I’ve slept on anything other than ‘my’ side in the bed, even though it’s a new one bought since I’ve been on my own!

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 15/12/2022 22:20

I have door side at home as i fear i cant navigate in the dark to get to the kids in emergency.

In a hotel, again door side even if its the opposite side to normal again need to have emergency exit plan

No idwa where this thought process stems from its just me.

Not been alone in bed since met dh. But if he gets up 1st i tend to go to middle

EspeciallyD · 15/12/2022 22:20

I always sleep on the left wherever I am and whether or not DH is there. I wouldn't want to be in the middle and have to pull myself across to see what time it is or reach something from my bedside table.

Noseylittlemoo · 15/12/2022 22:22

I first got a double bed when I moved into my own flat and chose the side closest to the door (which was the right side if looking at the bed) for a quick exit in an emergency 🤣
When my DH moved in he naturally took the other side and when we go on holidays we follow the same pattern me on the right side and him on the left.
When we moved to our house I wanted to be nearest the door (and plug sockets!) But that was the other way round to our usual set up. We tried it for about 2 weeks but it just didn't feel right. Even snuggling the that way round felt awkward so we had to swap back (and I had to give up the plug sockets)!

Ifyoudreamofsanddunes · 15/12/2022 22:22

I don't have a side of the bed! 😬did realise that wasn't normal

mondaytosunday · 15/12/2022 22:23

Yes. Though it tends to be whatever side is convenient for getting to the bathroom in the middle of the night. In my current room it's on the left, and my dogs take up the right.

kittenkipping · 15/12/2022 22:43

The single most deciding factor in choosing dh as a life partner was and is- his complete apathy in regard to bed sides. I am the embodiment of chaos and chose a side every night upon my own whim. Sometimes if I get up to pee in the night I change my mind and move him. It's the single trait that EVERY other partner I've ever had has despised and tried to change in me. In bed sides I'm selfish and random and chaotic. And my dh doesn't care.

SkankingWombat · 15/12/2022 22:46

Home alone in the summer or out of the house: middle

Home alone in the winter: middle to DH's side as DCat commandeers my side if DH is absent (I am her chosen human, so I assume she wants the bit that smells most of me 🤷🏻‍♀️)

ShillyShallySherbet · 15/12/2022 23:05

We don’t really have set sides of the bed, it depends on which room we’re in really because my husband will be on the side nearest the door because he often needs to gets out of bed in the night whereas I sleep through. When I’m in a double bed on my own I lie diagonally and love it!

UsingChangeofName · 15/12/2022 23:05

We have our own sides at home, obviously, as we are not psychopaths.

When dh isn't there, I still stay on my side - that's where all my stuff is, and I can't put one leg outside of the covers if I were in the middle of the bed, plus, you'd fall down the crack between the pillows.

But, wildly, we mix it up on holidays just sleep on either side then obviously stick to that side for the rest of the week--.

UsingChangeofName · 15/12/2022 23:06

Weird crossing out there ....wish there were an edit button.....

CrownTheTurkey · 15/12/2022 23:36

I always stay on my side of the bed even when DH is away, which he is for months at a time.
I only have my half of the bedding to launder too then.

How do you wash half a sheet/duvet cover?

confusedlots · 16/12/2022 00:04

I totally sleep in the middle when I'm on my own, it's one of the reasons I love it when DH announces he's away for a night! It doesn't happen very often. Otherwise I always stick to my side!

We have a mattress each with its own bedding.

mrsfollowill · 16/12/2022 00:13

I've normally slept on my right side for my entire adult life- I cannot be doing with someone breathing on me though! I sleep on the right and DH on the left. This is in every place we stay so if on holiday etc we have 'our side' of the bed. Bit weird when you think about it Grin but it suits both of us. If I have the bed to myself though (maybe once every few years?) I'm a snoring starfish - love the whole bed to myself and the chance to stretch out!
We have a Kingsize bed but I loved an apartment we stayed in with a superking.
