What do you eat with sauerkraut?

I've had a jar in the fridge for ages and just don't know what to do with it. I don't dislike the taste but what does it go on/with? How do you eat it?

I eat it with steak or burgers, or sausages would go well.

If it’s ’live’ as in you bought it refrigerated in the health food section, then don’t heat it as that kills all the good micro organisms. Treat it like a prepped vegetable ready to eat . Make a plate of food and put a portion on the side, any food, any plate, just eat it.

Gyros and paprika chips...... Honestly that was my go hangover meal in 🇩🇪 Gyros Teller..... Aldi do it now in frozen section

chronictonic · 08/12/2022 20:44

If it’s in a jar it won’t be live.
We make our own and eat it cold with salads etc. DH likes it on the side of smoked salmon

I eat it with all sorts.

Usually I eat it with salad, a couple of boiled eggs, a sweet potato and houmous.

Or just in a cheese sandwich.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 08/12/2022 20:51

Sausages, it's the law.

70billionthnamechange · 08/12/2022 20:52

Salt beef

Shopgirl1 · 08/12/2022 20:52

Sausages and potatoes, or better still potato dumplings. Also any pork dish.

Krustykrabpizza · 08/12/2022 20:54

Hmm I don't really make soups and stews very often. Looking more for quick ways I can add it in to lunches that will taste good. I've put some sausages on the shopping list! Sweet potato is a good one.
I did buy a jar and from what I've read it should still have some benefits.

Ooo I adore sauerkraut. In our family we have it with either beef or duck and dumplings or we have it with chicken and potato. It’s amazing and so good for you.

napody · 08/12/2022 20:56

All my suggestions have been covered and I've been given some new ideas too, so thanks for asking the question!
I've recently started making it, it's incredibly cheap and easy just chop, massage in some salt until it's soft, pack into a jar and 'burp' it (let the gas escape) daily for ten days. Delicious and lots more health benefits than the jarred stuff.

GrumpyPanda · 08/12/2022 20:57

Traditional sauerkraut goes with fresh sausages - blood sausage and liver sausage, customarily on the day farmers did the slaughtering for the winter season. Later on in the season with brined or lighty smoked meats, usually pork. In all of these cases the kraut itself is best with the addition of white wine and meat broth. You could also add some caramelized apples, although that's more commonly done with red cabbage.

For other dishes, there's a great Austro-Hungarian dish called Szegediner goulash - essentially 50:50 pork goulash and sauerkraut, first braised separately then combined.

It's also fantastic in a Russian cabbage and tomato soup - look for recipes for "shchi" and make sure to pick one that's half fresh cabbage and half sauerkraut.

Schupfnudeln & Sauerkraut 😋

Athenen0ctua · 08/12/2022 20:59

I eat it with fried egg and mushrooms on toast, or with cheese on toast, or sausages and mash.

Greenfinch7 · 08/12/2022 21:00

On sandwiches-

Cheese, tomato, mustard, lettuce, sauerkraut

Tahini, miso (thin layer), sauerkraut, something green (arugula, lettuce, cucumber). This one is my favourite- you might find it weird, but it's delicious!

featheryfancy · 08/12/2022 21:02

Burgers or pastrami sandwiches mainly.
Sometimes rolled up in Emmental cheese as a snack

DogInATent · 08/12/2022 21:02

Bratwurst, mash and sauerkraut 'round ours. Or any sausages will do.

Just treat it like any other veg to put on the side of a meal.

Pollywoddles · 08/12/2022 21:03

In a salad with yoghurt dressing!

SierraSapphire · 08/12/2022 21:03

I eat kimchi for the gut health benefits, and I gave up trying to put it with things, and now I just eat a few fork fulls before meals. I eat it much more regularly than if I was trying to incorporated it into meals.

Manchmal · 08/12/2022 21:05

In Fishfinger Sandwiches

Elerandooo · 08/12/2022 21:06

Tiger baguette, bratwurst, ketchup, mustard and sauerkraut 👌🏻 I know what I’m picking up for dinner tomorrow!
