I've had a jar in the fridge for ages and just don't know what to do with it. I don't dislike the taste but what does it go on/with? How do you eat it?

Lidl’s excellent bratwurst, mustard & home made potato salad. All washed down with a cold weissbier. 😋

Pierogi (the Ruski ones; potato and cheese) and sour cream with fresh dill on top. Heavenly.

Wiener
Bratwurst (Waitrose does nice ones in in the deli section or Lidl).
Gammon works as well

I grew up with it with mashed potatoes but now we mainly eat it with Bratwurst and a dark/rye bread.

Oh I like the sound of that

As a condiment with fried or breaded chicken, pork or veal (think schnitzel).

It's great for cutting through fat.

AdaColeman · 08/12/2022 21:39

With pork chop or belly pork or gammon.

With rollmop herrings and yoghurt, or smoked mackerel fillets and mustard sauce.

With potato salad.

I make bigos with it, a Polish hunter stew. I make it at Easter but it would be perfect this time of year. Very warming www.renbehan.com/2015/03/bigos-hunters-stew.html

Sausage and mash

chocolatenutcase · 08/12/2022 21:43

Ooh I have it in a wrap. Humous, sauerkraut and spinach. Delicious.

Soothsayer1 · 09/12/2022 00:03

cheese toasties
I make my own and find it quite addictive

I eat kimchi for the gut health benefits, and I gave up trying to put it with things, and now I just eat a few fork fulls before meals. I eat it much more regularly than if I was trying to incorporated it into meals.

same here, I would never cook it, that would hurt the microbes wouldnt it😥

If it’s in a jar it won’t be live.
We make our own and eat it cold with salads etc. DH likes it on the side of smoked salmon

It’s not dead if it’s in a jar. LOL! It’s dead if it’s been homogenised, vacuum packed with heat. It will say on the jar if it’s live, the clue is if you paid more than £5 for the jar and you took it from a refrigerated shelf. If you got it from the Polish section at a £1 for a large jar, then it has no beneficial micro organisms left as they will have been cooked out.
I used to make live sauerkraut for a farmer’s market so I do know what I’m talking about.

Flowersintheattic57 · 09/12/2022 17:55

On top of hummus on toast or rice crackers.

gogohmm · 09/12/2022 17:56

Bratwurst or Rueben sandwiches

I've considered this, but you say 'used to' so I presume you decided it wasnt worth it?
(I know I'm being lazy & should do my research but I hope you'll indulge me as a fellow maker of sauerkraut😇🙏)

Scarfymcscarface · 09/12/2022 17:58

Corned beef

GiantPiggyCages · 09/12/2022 18:03

With a cheese toastie

Mysonwontwash · 09/12/2022 18:15

I have only ever had it with Pierogi and it was delicious. Also have them with sour cream and apple sauce too!

Hooverphobe · 09/12/2022 18:20

I make my own and eat it on its own from a bowl. 😳

Plannersareus · 09/12/2022 18:26

My problem is chronic fatigue. I was in a remission from it and had the bright idea that I would turn my hobby into a business. Ha!
The problem is that I couldn’t keep up with demand. After two years I was broken and sold it to a younger couple who are now in the same position: they can’t keep up with demand.
What you need is a decent amount of investment and the kind of equipment that is used in Poland. It’s very labour intensive. The good bits is being at the farmer’s markets and talking to your customers about gut health, seeing the same people every month make a bee line to your stall. That part is great.
Pm me if you want to know any more.

With pork goulash and spätzle. I’m hungry and this thread is making it worse!
