Which goes on first, tinsel or baubles?

Look, I know given current events this is going to sound trivial, and it is, but my son's teacher has started an argument in this house.

He came home from school today when I was decorating the tree and told me I should be putting the tinsel on after the lights but before the decorations, as his teacher did it that way the other day. Apparently this is the Right Way.

It's news to me as I have been draping the tinsel last since I first started decorating Christmas trees with my mother in 1970 -something.

Who is right?

Here it's : lights - tinsel - baubles. Sorry! I'm sure someone will be along to tell us that we're both wrong for putting tinsel on at all, though!

Lights, tinsel, baubles.

Except my tree is pre-lit and I don’t do tinsel 😁

baubles

Nonsense to construct in any other way.

Lights, tinsel, baubles

Except DH and I were discussing tinsel, lights, baubles so the lights get less covered. But that's for next year to decide!

hellycat · 08/12/2022 15:49

I can't believe I have been doing it wrong for all these years. 😳

on the plus side, clearly no-one has notice or they would have pointed it out.

For a minute I thought you were suggesting I divorce my husband over it.

Sorry but it’s definitely lights baubles tinsel then I used to add that fake cobwebby stuff but I’ve ditched that. More importantly I’ve moved house and no longer have a bay window to put my tree in ….

Cornelious · 08/12/2022 15:54

Lights, tinsel , baubles /bows. I've don't without tinsel this year though.

FawnFrenchieMum · 08/12/2022 15:54

Dont you knock all the baubles off adding the tinsel afterwards?

Definitely lights, tinsel, baubles, although I hate tinsel so thats replaced with tree ribbon in my house (still before the baubles though)

WeepingSomnambulist · 08/12/2022 15:55

Lights, tinsel, baubles.
I'm enjoying this as the new LTB.

bigbadbarry · 08/12/2022 15:56

We always put the lights on last! My dad always did it that way and he is always right. So in this house, baubles-tinsel-lights. I'm going to consult my sister.

Fake cobwebs on a Christmas tree? Do you have a photo of your tree when you did that?

ReviewingTheSituation · 08/12/2022 15:57

What?? Surely has to be lights, baubles, then tinsel (or whatever filler you use). The tinsel fills any gaps where baubles haven't been.

(I don't have tinsel, but some nice garlandy things made from straw (perhaps) that I got from the Christmas markets somewhere in Europe about 10 years ago, so maybe they're easier to put on the tree than tinsel)

But if the lights go on last then you can see the wire.
The lights dont need to be on last because they'll shine through the tinsel baubles. You put lights on first, set back a little on the branches so the wire isnt visible and then tinsel if you want on top and then baubles on the ends of the branches.
