Which goes on first, tinsel or baubles?

Look, I know given current events this is going to sound trivial, and it is, but my son's teacher has started an argument in this house.

He came home from school today when I was decorating the tree and told me I should be putting the tinsel on after the lights but before the decorations, as his teacher did it that way the other day. Apparently this is the Right Way.

It's news to me as I have been draping the tinsel last since I first started decorating Christmas trees with my mother in 1970 -something.

Who is right?

Lights
Tinsel and/or baubles
Ribbons running vertically if using
Lametta if not using tinsel

The End.

pinneddownbytabbies · 08/12/2022 17:28

We used to have lametta as well, till I discovered that it does dire things to the insides of pets if they are daft enough to eat it,

I like tinsel! I have some on my tree - just three rows on an 8 foot tree. It's lovely. I tried without it one year and although I have approximately 70,000 ornaments the tree didn't look the same without it!

And Lights, Tinsel, Baubles - Sorry OP!

(Although I wrap the lights round each branch (Green wire) - so I don't see the wires - they always drove me nuts!)

Lights, baubles no tinsel

MenaiMna · 08/12/2022 17:31

LGBTA Christmas trees haha
Lights
Garland (which MIGHT be made of tinsel)
Baubles
Topper
Angel Hair (which IS made of tinsel)

Elmo230885 · 08/12/2022 17:32

My parents are adamant that tinsel goes on last, I remeber that being the case as a child but I can't see how that could possibly work.

randomsabreuse · 08/12/2022 17:34

Lights, tinsel, baubles here too. In decreasing order of fiddlyness/size.

Always skinny tinsel

MaggieFS · 08/12/2022 17:38

Tinsel has no place on a tree

Neverknowinglysensible · 08/12/2022 17:47

I fear and dread putting the lights on the tree. I can never get them evenly spread. My idea of heaven would be a pre-lit tree.
Lights do come first though. Followed by a celebratory Baileys.

megletthesecond · 08/12/2022 17:49

Lights, tinsel, baubles.

SkinnyFatte · 08/12/2022 17:54

There's tinsel EVERYWHERE in my lounge. Damn the tinsel-haters! 😀

Also: agree with majority.

Winterfellismyhome · 08/12/2022 17:54

Prelit tree and no tinsel is the way

Spicypies · 08/12/2022 18:00

Lights—nice baubles—filler baubles

no tinsel

CellarBellaatemycoal · 08/12/2022 18:09

This year it’s dawned on me that it should be tinsel, lights, baubles. Always I’ve done lights, tinsel baubles but realised a lot of lights were hiding under tinsel. Tinsel can correct a wonky shaped tree.

Claudia84 · 08/12/2022 18:10

Lights, baubles, tinsel
The tinsel is the scarf. You put the scarf on last.

DipmeinChoc · 08/12/2022 18:14

Lights
tinsel bead string
Baubles

DipmeinChoc · 08/12/2022 18:16

No Tinsel on the tree unless it's sparse then I add green tinsel.
I have lots of white and silver tinsel on the flat surfaces to add sparkle.

UglyBeauty · 08/12/2022 18:17

Lights. Baubles. No tinsel!

DappledThings · 08/12/2022 18:18

hellycat · 08/12/2022 17:26

Why all the tinsel hate? A Christmas tree without tinsel is like a sky without stars.

Quite right.

RudolphTheGreat · 08/12/2022 18:18

Tinsel, lights, baubles. Otherwise you're covering the lights up with the tinsel

glamourousindierockandroll · 08/12/2022 18:20

Lights
Tinsel
Baubles

WeDoNotTalktoPennilynLott · 08/12/2022 18:22

I do baubles, tinsel, lights.

Then again, my tree always looks shit so don't listen to me.

JoanThursday · 08/12/2022 18:25

Lights, gold ribbon, baubles.

when you think about it, isn't tinsel a funny word?

Just looked it up: it's from late middle English for cloth interwoven with metallic thread, from the old French 'to sparkle'.

There you go. Every day is a school day.
