Which goes on first, tinsel or baubles?

Look, I know given current events this is going to sound trivial, and it is, but my son's teacher has started an argument in this house.

He came home from school today when I was decorating the tree and told me I should be putting the tinsel on after the lights but before the decorations, as his teacher did it that way the other day. Apparently this is the Right Way.

It's news to me as I have been draping the tinsel last since I first started decorating Christmas trees with my mother in 1970 -something.

Who is right?

But if the lights go on last then you can see the wire.
The lights dont need to be on last because they'll shine through the tinsel baubles. You put lights on first, set back a little on the branches so the wire isnt visible and then tinsel if you want on top and then baubles on the ends of the branches.

Yes I can see this. My life is in ruins. I'm wondering now if it was just that he wanted to finish his cup of tea first (because he always did the lights while we did the rest of it)

plinkplinkfizzer · 08/12/2022 16:02

@WeepingSomnambulist That is the thinking , you don't want to see the wire . And if you have glaring gaps when you are finished then you don't have enough baubles .

I don’t put tinsel on the tree but I’d like to welcome you to the period of childhood where your child realises that not everyone does everything the same way you do and comes home to announce that you’ve been DOING IT WRONG all this time.

Keep your ketchup in the fridge but Bill’s parents keep theirs in the cupboard? YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG. Eat your salad on a side plate but Sophie’s parents have theirs on the main plate? YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG. It’s a phase that’s not at all irritating and last about fifteen years, give it take.

As everyone else said.

Lights.
Tinsel (If we had any. Which we don't)
Baubles.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/12/2022 16:22

Lights, tinsel, those Ikea strings of gold beads, then baubles. In theory the star on top should be last but DD put it on first this year while I was still untangling lights.

milawops · 08/12/2022 16:26

I don't have tinsel. But once the kids are old enough to demand it it will be lights, tinsel, baubles. Otherwise you'd knock the baubles off when you do the tinsel wouldn't you? I honestly didn't realise having kids would bring this minefield into my life 😂

Fragrantandfoolish · 08/12/2022 16:28

Lights tinsel baubles, obvs,,

Thistooshallpsss · 08/12/2022 16:49

Sorry to whoever asked about fake cobweb stuff it must’ve been in the 1980s (I’m very old!) it sort of shimmered but it was really messy to take off. Probably a fire and environmental Hazard too but we didn’t know about things like that then

Spenn · 08/12/2022 16:53

Tinsel lights baubles here so the tinsel doesn't cover up the lights. Any gaps can be filled with more baubles....

Bluevelvetsofa · 08/12/2022 16:54

Lights, baubles, definitely no tinsel.

Ylvamoon · 08/12/2022 16:55

Tinsel, Lights more Tinsel, Baubles and other decorations.

We have a large artificial tree that's missing a few branches... so the first layer of Tinsel is green to compensate!

CuddlyRita · 08/12/2022 16:56

Lights, tinsel, baubles

DappledThings · 08/12/2022 17:07

Also LTB.

And a tree without tinsel is a sad neglected naked tree.

Theraffarian · 08/12/2022 17:10

Definitely lights tinsel, baubles , I wonder if the fake cobweb stuff was a skinny version of angel hair or lametta . The stuff the sell now is mainly quite chunky but back i. The day you could get a very fine version of it .

AfterSchoolWorry · 08/12/2022 17:12

Lights
Baubles
Throw the tinsel out the window
Lametta.😁

Smearywindowsagain · 08/12/2022 17:14

It’s lights, tinsel, baubles. The lights shine through the tinsel, the tinsel is a filler and hides the wires from the lights, the baubles are the main event so are at the forefront. Centre stage so to speak

girlmom21 · 08/12/2022 17:18

Definitely LTB. I'm concerned by the amount of people doing it wrong.
Im telling Santa on all of you.

TheYummyPatler · 08/12/2022 17:20

I actually put the tinsel on before the lights. I wrap it around the tree trunk so it’s all sparkly on the inside of the tree.

ladygindiva · 08/12/2022 17:23

Tinsel doesn't belong on trees. It's horrific.

ladygindiva · 08/12/2022 17:23

Lights then baubles here. Defo no tinsel. Ever.

pinneddownbytabbies · 08/12/2022 17:24

Lights, then tinsel (you can use it to disguise some of the wires), then baubles.

<bangs gavel>

Bouledeneige · 08/12/2022 17:24

Lights then baubles. No tinsel.

BruceAndNosh · 08/12/2022 17:24

You're all wrong.
Tinsel goes in the bin not on a tree

hellycat · 08/12/2022 17:26

Why all the tinsel hate? A Christmas tree without tinsel is like a sky without stars.

I know someone who does baubles, lights, tinsel!

I can't stand tinsel so can't answer for me!
