Showers in the dark and other strangely nice things

A few years ago there was a thread on here about weird but nice ways of doing things.

I loved that thread and still do two of the things that posters shared: showering in the dark- strangely comforting; and brushing my teeth with warm water- also nice.

Do you have any weird but nice ways to do ordinary things?

Forgot to me to add (Not during a thunderstorm)

Mirabai · 04/12/2022 22:42

A cold bedroom with 2 duvets and a hot water bottle. Ok that’s everyone’s reality now, but I’ve always liked it.

teraculum29 · 04/12/2022 22:46

I thought that brushing teeth with warm water was the norm...

Kind of related. - I'm painting my bedroom this week so had no curtains up at the bedroom window a couple of nights ago. The bed is right by the (big) window and it was amazing! I couldn't believe how beautiful it was and that I'd never done it before... New curtains are now up, but am considering sleeping with curtains open in the winter especially - was so lovely looking the stars and moon Grin

I have big windows in my bedroom & from my bed all I can see are a few tree tops, unfortunately once you stand up it's just a normal suburban street. I have lived here almost 15 years and never as anything at the windows, I like to see the sky.

When we stay in remote villas on holiday I like lying on a sun lounger at sundown to watch the bats and then the stars come out. This summer we had a pool too, so I was up at daybreak to swim in the gloom and then watch the sun rise and the birds coming down to drink from the pool wrapped in my towel. Everyone else was still asleep and the it was so peaceful. I didn’t think to swim naked but I’ll give that a try in future.

Snorkelling in calm water is like flying too.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 04/12/2022 22:50

rubbing my feet together in bed. Also resting the tip of my right foot between the big toe on my left foot and the toe next to it.

It's something I picked up in a pre children yoga class originally and found it really relaxing and weirdly 'grounding'.

I feel like I spend my whole life running round after others and in a flurry of stress and busyness. But those brief soothing few moments rubbing my feet together as I lie down in bed are just for me, regardless of any sick children clinging to me at the time or whatever else is going on.

SkylightSkylight · 04/12/2022 22:50

I know it's not what you were asking (sorry) but I live being outside naked in the rain, better still a storm. I used to live somewhere with a climate more suited to it & in a house not overlooked!!

id scare the neighbours here & it's seldom warm enough!!

@Livedandlearned I can't think of anything, but I guess that's because they're my norm?!

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/12/2022 22:55

Swimming naked in a pool at night, somewhere warm. Can’t beat it

ThirtyThreeTrees · 04/12/2022 22:56

Warming bathrobe and slipped on the heater before getting out of the shower.

Chocolate chip cookies dipped in ice cold milk (done only when I'm on my own!)

declutteringmymind · 04/12/2022 22:57

Hot tub in the snow.

A sip of a hot drink followed by a separate sip of a cold drink. My favourite combo is a cup of tea and a Diet Coke.

A square of chocolate in your mouth and then a sip of coffee.

SpiritedSneeze · 04/12/2022 22:58

In summer I put the bins out very early in the morning rather than the night before.

I'm up early for work often anyway but there is something so calming and nice about standing outside at 4/5 am when there is nobody else around and its just starting to get light.
I live in a noisy, busy, dirty city so early when everything is pink-lit, quiet and the air feels clean and its a little bit cold- feels so peaceful. Even if I am just quietly leaving binbags in the road before sneaking back up to bed.

That return is also lovely- shoving cold feet into a bed thats still warm is like getting back into a hug.

Pumpupthejampumpitup · 04/12/2022 23:03

I like a lot less light in the evenings…my ex used to get home and turn all the lights on. Urgh!

I have baths by candlelight occasionally but have never showered. Will give it a go.

Soakitup37 · 04/12/2022 23:23

Was in the bath the other day when 5mo was crying (or so I thought) baby was soundo so I went back to the bath dripping wet but got in and felt fantastic! Ditto pp about getting back into a warm bed! Delicious!

must try a shower in the dark now!

Shaving one leg only, especially when it’s the first post-winter shave, and rubbing the bald leg against the Mr Tumnus leg is also GREAT.

😂😂😂

I do this, ever since I was a kid.

My DS also sleep with the curtains and blinds up.

Livedandlearned · 05/12/2022 07:18

Lots of cosy/warm/cold and weather related ones. If I struggle to fall asleep I imagine living in a small cottage with a roaring fire and outside is a heavy storm.

As a kid I would love to sneak outside in the rain and find shelter. I loved being outside hearing the rain all around me but keeping dry. I even remember once dragging my duvet cover out in the garden and thinking I was all snug & warm - the duvet must’ve got drenched though! 😂 Same thing being in a caravan/tent in a torrential downpour - love it!

TallulahBetty · 05/12/2022 11:38

My 'thing' is having the bedroom window open at night even in winter. I love my bedroom stone cold but then the duvet lovely and warm.

peaceandove · 05/12/2022 12:39

In the Winter I like to just have a couple of lamps on in the living room, light a scented candle, then I put one of those ambient images off YouTube on the TV. My favourite one is of a log cabin, with a crackling fire and you can see and hear the rain against the window. Feels so cosy.

Montague22 · 05/12/2022 12:44

@TallulahBetty I’m the same, even though my last two houses haven’t had a small window. A freezing room helps me sleep. Hate staying over at people’s houses that are too warm…though this might be less of a problem this year!

Defiantlynot41 · 05/12/2022 12:48

@Livedandlearned fabulous podcast for you here podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/relaxing-sounds-podcast/id1506853462?i=1000538143855

(Torrential rain on a Scottish street)

Lots of other relaxing soundscapes but that's my favourite!

knackeredcat · 05/12/2022 12:51

YY to water at night. Shower with just the shaving light on. Beach walks and paddling at night, especially when the moon is full and the sky is clear. But the most fun was floating in an atmospherically lit outdoor mezzanine pool, fully clothed, at night, when nobody else was around. 10/10, would do again 😄

I was tipsy (could have been a bit risky, I know) and it was in Malta

ThreeRingCircus · 05/12/2022 12:59

I love going outside to the garden in the rain if it's a proper heavy downpour, particularly if I can just strip my clothes off afterwards and get straight into a warm bath.

Also getting into bed with my socks on for a bit then taking them off. It means I really appreciate the feel of the duvet against my bare feet.

Lying on the sun lounger on a summer night and stargazing.

Wearing an eye mask to sleep at night. The gentle pressure against my eyes is really soothing.

JeanMarie · 05/12/2022 13:29

I like eating chocolate in the dark. I'll sometimes have a few squares on my bedside table and if I wake through the night ( very likely as I'm a really awful sleeper atm) I'll have them. It feels weirdly comforting and for some reason tastes much nicer. Maybe it's to do with sensory awareness....the feeling is more concentrated cos I can't see? Definitely going to try the shower in the dark.
